This home displays meticulous attention to detail with a quite attentive owner. Our every need was addressed by the homeowners without them becoming overzealous. We appreciated the maps and information provided for Humboldt County as we enjoy exploring the areas we are visiting. We have stayed at quite a few VRBO's over the last few years, and what we really liked/appreciated about this location was - the large walk-in closet with hanging room and fold out valet, the vanity mirror, very well appointed kitchen, attention to detail in construction and design of entire space, and the extremely comfortable bed and linens. We would not hesitate in recommending this location to any type of traveler looking to explore this beautiful part of California!

we just got back from two nights at the parkside cottage for a visit to humboldt state. i have stayed at several vrbo properties in the past, and this one was the most well taken care of. it's relatively small, but still manages to feel very comfortable and spacious: great lighting and the perfect sun-drenched deck. a very efficient and charming use of space. the location is also excellent. my younger brother was able to walk to and from campus in just a few minutes, and it always felt very safe. we'd definitely stay there again.

My husband and I spent an immensely enjoyable weekend in Parkside Cottage, and were thrilled at the thought with which the kitchen had been equipped--we cooked almost every meal the whole weekend, and hardly had to use any of our own kitchen tools! In addition, Jim and Christine were fantastic hosts, even lending us a mixer when we'd forgotten to bring one, and happy to talk food and local restaurants. We walked all over Arcata from the cottage, and never felt too far from anything, yet it was still wonderfully private! And if we needed anything (or just wanted to chat about food!) Jim and Christine were right next door and more than happy to help. The cottage was wonderfully comfortable and quiet (well, except for the *very* loud frogs...), and the bed was lovely. Even the shower was wonderful--perfect temperature, and great water pressure. I'd highly recommend Parkside Cottage for anyone visiting Arcata.

I was only in town for a few days but my stay was amazingly comfortable and enjoyable largely due to staying here. It's super nice and quiet and yet surprisingly close to everything in Arcata. It was exactly as described and shown as well as immaculately clean. The owner(s) were super hospitable and I would certainly stay here again.

This house is wonderful. The owners are helpful and want their guests to enjoy their visit. Anything you could want is available in the house, including little touches you wouldn't think of but come in handy. The location makes it easy to get anywhere in town. If I could give them 6 stars, I would!

What a nice location if you enjoy walking to your destination. This place is located in a nice quiet neighborhood with a safe walk to town. No need to drive all week. Arcata has a college town feel with a northern California vibe. The food choices are good. Biking is close. There was no need to load up in a car for our exercise. The cottage is very comfortable with a very cushy bed. I had all I needed for basic food preparation. Very nice owners. Thanks

By far and away, the most immaculately kept VRBO situation we have found ourselves in. The pictures give a clear indication as to what you will get with this charming cottage truly located in the heart of Arcata. Clean, convenient & comfortable. What a great use of space from the bed & bathroom to the deck to even great kitchen knives, this places has everything you may want or need for a great visit to Humboldt. It is literally walking distance to the main streets of town with all the restaurants, shops etc as well as Redwood Park and the University. We were able to go from Trinidad to Southern Humboldt all from the convenience of this awesome cottage. Very much looking forward to our next stay at this cottage.

I stayed here for four nights and was very pleased to have found this place. It is small, thought it is the best use of space I have seen and more importantly, it is spotless. The kitchen is stocked with every cooking item and utensil I needed and more. The bed is extremely comfortable. The artwork adds beauty to the cottage. If you plan to only explore Arcata you won't even need a car as everything is in walking distance from the cottage. Jim was incredibly helpful and I'm already planning my next visit.

We recently spent three very nights at Parkside Cottage. It is a very well mantained property and the owner was extremely helpful. It is a perfect accommodation for two. The bed was very comfortable and the living room and kitchen were perfect for our needs. It was in a quiet, beautiful, and convenient location. Our son and his family have just moved to Arcata so we plan to come back to stay at Parkside Cottage often. Lynne Fingerman

This rental is small (about 600 sf), but very well appointed. Charming. Very clean. Reasonably priced. Super convenient...it was an easy walk to anywhere in town from this location, and we took advantage of this. It was a nice alternative to be able to cook our own meals, instead of eating out all of the time. This rental is definitely on my list of preferred places to stay in Arcata.

We were traveling from San Fran up the California coast and stayed for three nights in this cozy and comfortable cottage. We mainly needed a home base for our day hikes in the surrounding Redwoods. The cottage was stocked with useful hiking maps and trail guides, as well as plenty of local information on eateries, shopping, etc. And the owner, who was quite knowledgable on the area, generously offered advice on where to hike, visit, shop, and eat (go to Los Bagels....you won't be disappointed!). He even provided us with helpful information on Napa/Sonoma, our next stop, on our way out. Thanks! The place is a close walk to all Arcata offers, and a close drive to hiking and coastal areas. Super clean bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living/dining area with a private feel. Great place!

I stayed in the Parkside Cottage for six nights and everything about the experience met my expectations and more. Customer service before my arrival was excellent. The owners responded to questions and provided all necessary documents and information very quickly. The instructions for arrival were thorough. The cottage itself is wonderful -- private, clean, on a quiet street with a park at the end, within walking distance of the Arcata Plaza. It is nicely furnished with an amazingly comfortable bed, luxurious-feeling linens, substantial cookware. I cooked several meals there and found everything I needed in the well-stocked kitchen. The DVD collection is large and contains lots of movies I'd actually want to watch, and the bookshelf contains lots of books I'd actually want to read. Jim was great throughout my stay, offering suggestions without being intrusive. I have nothing negative to say about this place - I was extremely happy with my choice and would stay there again.

We have just returned from a 5 night stay at Parkside Cottage in Arcata on the occasion of our Grandson's Wedding. It was perfect in every way. We have visited Arcata many times before but the Cottage gave us an opportunity to experience this lovely town and all it has to offer in an entirely new way. The Cottage is located on a quiet street in a residential neighborhood that is walking distance to the Town Square with its many restaurants and shops. Each time we set out from the Cottage we took a different route to the Town Square following the self-guided tour of historic homes provided by the tourist bureau, enjoying the rich history of this town. When we were hungry we particularly enjoyed Renata's Creperie, Mazzotti's Italian Restaurant, Crosswinds (for breakfast), Arcata Scoop (for the best homemade ice cream imaginable) - all in the downtown area of Arcata. Wildberries Market is super convenient for groceries, wine, snacks and even a quick sandwich or bowl of soup. A short drive north took us to the town of Trinidad on the Beach where we had delicious Clam Chowder at the Trinidad Eatery. Jim and Christine were wonderful hosts from start to finish. We recommend their Parkside Cottage without reservation and we will definitely return.

My husband and I recently enjoyed a three-night stay at Parkside Cottage. I agree with the other reviewer who said they were tempted to keep this place a secret. We enjoyed cooking our own meals, walking to Wildberries Market, driving to beaches, visiting family in the area, and relaxing at the cottage apartment. The kitchen is fully stocked with pot, pans, utensils, etc. The housekeeping is immaculate. Thank you, Jim & Christine!

During a recent trip visit HSU, my daughter and I found the Parkside Cottage to be the perfect retreat. The cottage, accurately described on the VBRO website did not disappoint. Upon our arrival we found the property easily assessable, very clean, well appointed, loaded with charm, quiet, and peaceful. The fully outfitted kitchen provided many cooking options, while the comfortable master suite allowed for the perfect nights rest after long days of hiking about. An added benefit was the location; we were able to leave our car parked safely on the premises and walk to all of our Arcata destinations. Property owners Jim and Christine are friendly, responsive and informative, providing us with an easy, hassle free experience from start to finish. Parkside Cottage will forever be my first choice when returning to Arcata.

This charming cottage in Arcata was all that was advertised and more. The pictures and description don't do it justice. It is cozy, comfortable, and extremely well-equipped. We were there for a month and found everything we needed in the cottage. The owners were wonderful from first contact through checkout, doing everything possible to ensure we had an enjoyable visit to the area. Jim was full of suggestions for places to visit, based on our interests, and places to eat. He also provided interesting information on the local scene, from mushrooming to car restoration. We feel we have a new friend in Arcata. We would recommend this cottage to family, friends, and anyone looking for a get-away on the beautiful north coast of California. You can walk to town or to the redwoods behind the university, drive to nearby beaches and wetland areas for birdwatching, or just curl up in the cottage with one of the books in the library there and enjoy some peace and quiet. A wonderful experience all around.

I was tempted to give this place a poor review to help keep this GEM a secret!!! Even after reading the positive reviews I was still pleasantly surprised at how lovely this place is. It is on a very pretty and quiet street and the unit itself is very private and it was spotless when I checked in. Jim and Christine have furnished it with everything you will need. I liked the walk in closet too! The bed and pillows are very very comfy and I slept very snug. I will definitely be staying again! Thanks Jim and Christine for the hospitality!

We enjoyed staying there for 2 nights and added one more night to totally enjoy the area (went to see Eureka--nice wharf, Fortuna, Ferndale--a must see, Loleta--good cheese and Scotia while staying at Arcata). Jim's a good host that he suggested many places to explore. We would stay there again when we visit the Redwood areas in the future. Thank you, Jim and Christine!

The Parkside Cottage was a fantastic base for exploring Northern California's redwood parks and dramatic beaches. Conveniently located halfway between the Redwood National Forest and Humboldt Redwoods State Park, the cottage is perfectly sized and equipped for a self-catering vacation, with high quality, comfortable bedding, excellent shower pressure, and plenty of space to relax after long walks. The fully equipped kitchen has enough space for two people to prepare a meal together, with a gas stove, all of the necessary utensils and equipment, and a cozy dining area that is also great for planning the next day's activities. The cottage also offers an extensive collection of interesting movies, books, and detailed information about local parks and restaurants. Jim's suggestions and stories about the area were very entertaining and helped us make the most of our trip. The cottage is within easy walking distance to the locally-based supermarket, town square, and restaurants. It is located on a quiet residential street with a discreet back entrance that makes it feel completely private even though it is located right next to the owners' house, and the owners have mastered the art of being very friendly and helpful without being in the least intrusive. We almost canceled our trip at the last minute when our flight to Medford, Oregon was canceled, but Jim's enthusiastic encouragement to persevere in finding a flight via San Francisco, because we would “absolutely love the area”, rescued the whole vacation (and he was right!). His suggestion to rent a car from an off-airport location in San Francisco helped us find a great deal (in Berlingame, $165 for 9 days), even though we had to rent at the last minute. Arcata is an interesting town to explore on foot, and even though the well-known national and state redwood parks are a fairly short drive away, the community forest, a mile from the cottage, is well worth exploring with 11 miles of trails and dramatic tall trees. Twenty miles north, the agate beach at Patrick's Point State Park, is an amazing place to stroll by the Pacific Ocean listening to the pounding surf in the morning, and then enjoying the breathtaking views from the cliffs along the Rim Trail in the afternoon. Hats off to Jim and Christine for saving our vacation and providing great hospitality in such a lovely cottage!

it has been too long in writing this review, only because the pull of life has caught me up again, after our return from humboldt. i have to say ... it was a perfect vacation, and a perfect place to stay for my husband and i to rejuvenate ourselves with all that humboldt co has to offer. we absolutely loved this cottage, and the owners are wonderful, warm, respectful people, whom, we hope to see again in future road trips back to this beloved place. the cottage was immaculate. the bed was so wonderful after hiking and beach combing all day. the proximity to the square was exactly what we hoped for -- being able to wake up and walk to our favorite breakfast spot was so great. we cannot say enough about the special quality of arcata! and this cottage made it a perfect vacation! thank you, Jim!!! all our best! paul&amy

We recently stayed at this very charming cottage and had an absolutely wonderful stay. The condo was beautifully decorated with local art, had all the amenities needed to be a "home away from home", had supeior bedding, a very nice library and DVD selection, and the condo was emaculate. The location cannot be beat. We walked to the plaza, to HSU and all over town to restaurants and shopping. The hosts were wonderful - very helpful, friendly and made us feel very comfortable. I would highly recommend this cottage to my friends and family and to anyone who wants charming accomodations at a great value and location. Thanks again, Jim and Christine!

Clean, quiet, charming and close to everything. There is a bike rental in town nearby, and a bike would be sufficient to get to the stores, shops and restaurants of Arcata, as well as HSU. The kitchen was well supplied, the towels were fluffy and the sheets were soft. The owners were friendly, but left us to our own privacy. I enjoyed visiting with my daughter who is going to HSU and on summer break.

It's central location is wonderful -- we parked the car and were able to walk to nearly everything we wanted to do except the hiking in Redwood Park. The cottage was very clean and well equipped with kitchen supplies, a full library of DVDs, books to loan, etc. It was nice being right next to the park so the kids could go play while the adults had some quiet time. The cottage is great! Clean, convenient and includes fully equipped kitchen. 2-3 people can be very comfortable at the Cottage. The location is excellent - close to downtown Arcata and a short drive to the beach and to wonderful redwood forests. Local dining opportnites are varied - pastries and bread at Cafe Brio are wonderful and the crepes at Renata's Creperie were very tasty. Overall a great experience.

Each time we come here we enjoy the quality of the hospitality of Jim and Christine and feel like home in this comfortable and so nice cottage. We appreciate the location, its nice and quiet neighbourhood, the possibility to leave the car and go shopping down town by foot, or to start a hike to the community forest. Merci pour tout cela Jim et Christine

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Walking distance to campus or downtown. The tot lot near the home was a big feature for us as we had a toddler. The street was very quiet and if we listened- we heard frogs. The web site is accurate, the property immaculate, the owner- very helpful and welcomed us with local treats. You will find a bagel shop, organic icecream, healthy grocery, and a variety of dining options within a 5 minute walk.

Easy walking distance to shops in Arcata. Many nice running routes. Single bedroom with pull out couch. Enough space for family of 3. Unit has been recently updated.

For less than what you'd spend at the Hampton Inn well down the road, you'll have a quiet, beautiful cottage all to yourself, full of light and warmth, with a bed like a cloud on which to sleep, a complete book and DVD library, a well-equipped kitchen, and walking distance to the University, lovely shops, restaurants (Renata's), and a gourmet natural foods grocery with delicious takeout (Wildberries). It's like staying in the guest house of your favorite, world traveling artsy aunt or uncle; warm hardwood floors scattered with oriental rugs, unique and original art throughout, beautiful stoneware dishes and vintage flatware. The place is super CLEAN and well-maintained; fluffy towels and soft linens. Modern fixtures keep your stay in the 21st century, but the hospitality is definitely small-town, down home, and friendly, with a gourmand's recommendations on where to eat (and where NOT to eat, too!). Lots of insider information to be had here, but completely non-intrusive. There are church bells ringing in the distance, children playing in the nearby park, a party going on at the local meeting hall, and bullfrogs going to TOWN at night, and it's all music to the ears, but if you want quiet, just close the windows and doors, and--instant serenity. Stop looking. If they have your dates available, book it NOW.

Such a peaceful cottage environment--small yet full of space. We love the beautiful trees nearby, the interesting book collection, a movie for every taste, lovely art on the walls--a charm to share with our family members who live here in Arcata and McKinleyville--a great way to be an Arcatan for awhile! Thanks.........Marsha

We had a fabulous vacation and we decided this is, by far, THE BEST place to stay in Arcata. Centrally located so you can walk everywhere and right across the street from a great park. We were able to comfortably cook many meals in the well equiped kitchen it had everything we could possibily need. Owners were very nice and accomodating. And it is such a friendly neighborhood we chatted with many of the neighbors. We will stay here again for sure!

We enjoyed our stay very much. It provided a quiet and restful retreat from the festivities of the HSU commencement. The warm and sunny weather was a welcome surprise, but the return of the fog was just as pleasant.

Thanks for the lovely cottage. I loved being here with my friend. It is always a joy to come to CA. We enjoyed walking at Lost Man's Creek and especially found the Lady Bird Johnson Memorial Grove a beautiful place for quiet meditative walks.
