My husband and I recently enjoyed a three-night stay at Parkside Cottage. I agree with the other reviewer who said they were tempted to keep this place a secret. We enjoyed cooking our own meals, walking to Wildberries Market, driving to beaches, visiting family in the area, and relaxing at the cottage apartment. The kitchen is fully stocked with pot, pans, utensils, etc. The housekeeping is immaculate. Thank you, Jim & Christine!

During a recent trip visit HSU, my daughter and I found the Parkside Cottage to be the perfect retreat. The cottage, accurately described on the VBRO website did not disappoint. Upon our arrival we found the property easily assessable, very clean, well appointed, loaded with charm, quiet, and peaceful. The fully outfitted kitchen provided many cooking options, while the comfortable master suite allowed for the perfect nights rest after long days of hiking about. An added benefit was the location; we were able to leave our car parked safely on the premises and walk to all of our Arcata destinations. Property owners Jim and Christine are friendly, responsive and informative, providing us with an easy, hassle free experience from start to finish. Parkside Cottage will forever be my first choice when returning to Arcata.

This charming cottage in Arcata was all that was advertised and more. The pictures and description don't do it justice. It is cozy, comfortable, and extremely well-equipped. We were there for a month and found everything we needed in the cottage. The owners were wonderful from first contact through checkout, doing everything possible to ensure we had an enjoyable visit to the area. Jim was full of suggestions for places to visit, based on our interests, and places to eat. He also provided interesting information on the local scene, from mushrooming to car restoration. We feel we have a new friend in Arcata. We would recommend this cottage to family, friends, and anyone looking for a get-away on the beautiful north coast of California. You can walk to town or to the redwoods behind the university, drive to nearby beaches and wetland areas for birdwatching, or just curl up in the cottage with one of the books in the library there and enjoy some peace and quiet. A wonderful experience all around.

I was tempted to give this place a poor review to help keep this GEM a secret!!! Even after reading the positive reviews I was still pleasantly surprised at how lovely this place is. It is on a very pretty and quiet street and the unit itself is very private and it was spotless when I checked in. Jim and Christine have furnished it with everything you will need. I liked the walk in closet too! The bed and pillows are very very comfy and I slept very snug. I will definitely be staying again! Thanks Jim and Christine for the hospitality!

We stayed for 5 nights this September while visiting our daughter at HSU and had a great stay! The apartment had everything we needed to enjoy our time in Arcata and was close to everything so we were able to walk where ever we needed to go. The owners were very helpful and respectful of our privacy and have thought of every detail. This is our first choice for all future trips to HSU.

Parkside Cottage is a gem: beautifully decorated, thoughtfully equipped, and immaculately kept. Great privacy, quiet location in a charming neighborhood, and walking distance to Wildberry Market are additional attractive features. The owners are very organized, easy to communicate with, and super-helpful. What a comfortable home-away-from-home! A great place to stay to visit HSU, with lots of recreational acivities near-by: hiking, kayaking, bird-watching, beach-walking etc. Can't wait to come back!

This is truly a nice vacation cottage, with plenty of amenities. We enjoyed staying there for 2 nights and added one more night to totally enjoy the area (went to see Eureka--nice wharf, Fortuna, Ferndale--a must see, Loleta--good cheese and Scotia while staying at Arcata). Jim's a good host that he suggested many places to explore. We would stay there again when we visit the Redwood areas in the future. Thank you, Jim and Christine!

The Parkside Cottage was a fantastic base for exploring Northern California's redwood parks and dramatic beaches. Conveniently located halfway between the Redwood National Forest and Humboldt Redwoods State Park, the cottage is perfectly sized and equipped for a self-catering vacation, with high quality, comfortable bedding, excellent shower pressure, and plenty of space to relax after long walks. The fully equipped kitchen has enough space for two people to prepare a meal together, with a gas stove, all of the necessary utensils and equipment, and a cozy dining area that is also great for planning the next day's activities. The cottage also offers an extensive collection of interesting movies, books, and detailed information about local parks and restaurants. Jim's suggestions and stories about the area were very entertaining and helped us make the most of our trip. The cottage is within easy walking distance to the locally-based supermarket, town square, and restaurants. It is located on a quiet residential street with a discreet back entrance that makes it feel completely private even though it is located right next to the owners' house, and the owners have mastered the art of being very friendly and helpful without being in the least intrusive. We almost canceled our trip at the last minute when our flight to Medford, Oregon was canceled, but Jim's enthusiastic encouragement to persevere in finding a flight via San Francisco, because we would “absolutely love the area”, rescued the whole vacation (and he was right!). His suggestion to rent a car from an off-airport location in San Francisco helped us find a great deal (in Berlingame, $165 for 9 days), even though we had to rent at the last minute. Arcata is an interesting town to explore on foot, and even though the well-known national and state redwood parks are a fairly short drive away, the community forest, a mile from the cottage, is well worth exploring with 11 miles of trails and dramatic tall trees. Twenty miles north, the agate beach at Patrick's Point State Park, is an amazing place to stroll by the Pacific Ocean listening to the pounding surf in the morning, and then enjoying the breathtaking views from the cliffs along the Rim Trail in the afternoon. Hats off to Jim and Christine for saving our vacation and providing great hospitality in such a lovely cottage!

it has been too long in writing this review, only because the pull of life has caught me up again, after our return from humboldt. i have to say ... it was a perfect vacation, and a perfect place to stay for my husband and i to rejuvenate ourselves with all that humboldt co has to offer. we absolutely loved this cottage, and the owners are wonderful, warm, respectful people, whom, we hope to see again in future road trips back to this beloved place. the cottage was immaculate. the bed was so wonderful after hiking and beach combing all day. the proximity to the square was exactly what we hoped for -- being able to wake up and walk to our favorite breakfast spot was so great. we cannot say enough about the special quality of arcata! and this cottage made it a perfect vacation! thank you, Jim!!! all our best! paul&amy

My wife and I enjoyed two nights at this charming little cottage while visiting my alma mater HSU for the first time in almost a decade. Jim is a GREAT host and the cottage leaves NOTHING to be desired. It's location is perfect, close to HSU, close to downtown Arcata and in a very quiet neighborhood next to a small park. We can't wait to take our next trip to Arcata and stay there again!!!

The Parkside Cottage has a wonderful feel to it, from the time you walk in. My daughter and I were quite comfortable here, and yet retained our privacy. The Cottage has every amenity we needed, and more. It is beautiful. Light abounds. The artwork on the walls is tastefully done, and includes some local scenes. The owners were kind, efficient and respected our privacy. We will stay here always when we come to Arcata.

We recently stayed at this very charming cottage and had an absolutely wonderful stay. The condo was beautifully decorated with local art, had all the amenities needed to be a "home away from home", had supeior bedding, a very nice library and DVD selection, and the condo was emaculate. The location cannot be beat. We walked to the plaza, to HSU and all over town to restaurants and shopping. The hosts were wonderful - very helpful, friendly and made us feel very comfortable. I would highly recommend this cottage to my friends and family and to anyone who wants charming accomodations at a great value and location. Thanks again, Jim and Christine!

Clean, quiet, charming and close to everything. There is a bike rental in town nearby, and a bike would be sufficient to get to the stores, shops and restaurants of Arcata, as well as HSU. The kitchen was well supplied, the towels were fluffy and the sheets were soft. The owners were friendly, but left us to our own privacy. I enjoyed visiting with my daughter who is going to HSU and on summer break.

This cottage was perfect for a few days' visit to Arcata. It's central location is wonderful -- we parked the car and were able to walk to nearly everything we wanted to do except the hiking in Redwood Park. The cottage was very clean and well equipped with kitchen supplies, a full library of DVDs, books to loan, etc. It was nice being right next to the park so the kids could go play while the adults had some quiet time. It is in a very quiet neighborhood as well!

The location is excellent - close to downtown Arcata and a short drive to the beach and to wonderful redwood forests. Local dining opportnites are varied - pastries and bread at Cafe Brio are wonderful and the crepes at Renata's Creperie were very tasty. Overall a great experience.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Walking distance to campus or downtown. The tot lot near the home was a big feature for us as we had a toddler. The street was very quiet and if we listened- we heard frogs. The web site is accurate, the property immaculate, the owner- very helpful and welcomed us with local treats. You will find a bagel shop, organic icecream, healthy grocery, and a variety of dining options within a 5 minute walk.

For less than what you'd spend at the Hampton Inn well down the road, you'll have a quiet, beautiful cottage all to yourself, full of light and warmth, with a bed like a cloud on which to sleep, a complete book and DVD library, a well-equipped kitchen, and walking distance to the University, lovely shops, restaurants (Renata's), and a gourmet natural foods grocery with delicious takeout (Wildberries). It's like staying in the guest house of your favorite, world traveling artsy aunt or uncle; warm hardwood floors scattered with oriental rugs, unique and original art throughout, beautiful stoneware dishes and vintage flatware. The place is super CLEAN and well-maintained; fluffy towels and soft linens. Modern fixtures keep your stay in the 21st century, but the hospitality is definitely small-town, down home, and friendly, with a gourmand's recommendations on where to eat (and where NOT to eat, too!). Lots of insider information to be had here, but completely non-intrusive. There are church bells ringing in the distance, children playing in the nearby park, a party going on at the local meeting hall, and bullfrogs going to TOWN at night, and it's all music to the ears, but if you want quiet, just close the windows and doors, and--instant serenity. Stop looking. If they have your dates available, book it NOW.

My daughter and I stayed in the cottage during a late September visit to HSU. We couldn't have asked for a more delightful place to stay, truly a home away from home. It is quiet, charming, cozy and made us feel like we were actually experiencing living in Arcata. Everything we needed was right there and it was nice to be within walking distance of the campus and town. Jim and Christine haven't missed a detail on what might be needed for a comfortable stay. I am hoping my daughter attends HSU so that I have the opportunity to stay in the cottage again. Jim was very helpful before our visit, giving me tips on where we might want to eat and places of interest. Unfortunately he was out of town during our stay and we didn't get to meet.

What a pleasure to stay in this lovely cottage. My husband, 16-year-old daughter and myself stayed for nearly a week while getting my 19-year-old daughter settled into HSU. The quiet, quaint neighborhood was a pleasure to walk early every morning for a little exercise. The kitchen was so nicely equipped in the cottage that my husband, a chef, whipped up a delicious rosemary chicken dish with fresh rosemary compliments of Jim's garden. The wireless internet kept us connected to email and the web with our laptop. The separate bedroom was nice for us to have privacy and the bed was wonderfully comfortable. My daughter slept well on the futon and we used it during the day for TV viewing and reading. Overall, a delightful experience that we would recommend and hope to repeat. Thank you so much Jim for your hospitality and charming cottage.

The cottage was ideal for a mother, grandmother, and 10-month old baby-- clean, quiet, very comfortable, with gracious hosts and a very handy, delightful park with wood-chip play area, bucket swings, grass, and friendly neightborhood families. We appreciated very much all the baby stuff provided by Jim and Christine: well-made, well-working stroller, Pack'nPlay crib, high chair and baby gate--no need to fill one's car with all these! We hope to return next year during my daughter's week at Humboldt Music Camp (easy walk from the cottage).

We had the pleasure of staying in Jim and Christine's cottage for 4 nights and yearned to stay longer, even though Oregon was our final destination. The cottage was immaculate. The ammenities were exquisite. Jim and Christine provided fresh 100% cotton white sheets, cotton towels, organic soap/lotions. The kitchen was equipped with all that's needed to prepare meals. Jim directed us to wonderful areas to hike and take day trips, as well as a wonderful market; Wildberries which is within walking distance from their cottage. Wildberries features fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, organic coffee, etc. We loved Jim's hospitality as he was very gracious and helpful. Unfortunately we arrived in Arcata with car troubles. When we told Jim about our situation, he took action immediately. He did extensive research recommending a tire shop nearby that could replace our old tires with new ones within 1 hour. The goal was to continue our road trip to Oregon. After having traveled 2000 miles and being away from home for 8 nights, Dan and I agreed that we would definitely return to Jim and Christine's cottage because it felt like "home" to us.

There is always an element of apprehension when lodging arrangements are made online but I felt I hit the jackpot with this home! I was in town for a week to visit my daughter ( a grad student at HSU ) and her boyfriend and was looking for a place to entertain in a more homelike atmosphere. Jim and Christine provided just that - including a nifty little weber gas grill on which we made most of our evening meals! We even had a pizza and movie night ( movies provided by Jim's vast collection ). I had at first planned on renting a car but decided against it when I realized the cottage was within perfect walking distance to everything Arcata had to offer. I can't say enough about this rental (especially the wonderfully comfortable bed) and Jim and Christine . They are truly the perfect hosts and delightful people to boot!! My husband and I are already planning our return in October!

What could be better than a vacation going exactly as planned? One that that turns out even better, that’s what. We may travel for the sites and scenery, but it is the people we meet that we remember the longest. Don’t get me wrong Arcata is a delight—a vibrant community of caring people devoted to healthy and happy living (although they could use a few more decent restaurants…), but kinder, more generous, more memorable people than Jim and Christine you are unlikely to meet anywhere. We expected a clean, comfortable place to stay; what we got was that and friends for life. They welcomed us into their home and hearts. If you are looking for that proverbial home away from home, rest assured you will find it with these people. I can’t wait to go back!
