The cottages are in the City of Muskegon with all advantages but are so close to Lake Michigan, with Muskegon Lake 1 block north, that you feel like you are in full nature. Friendly neighbors speak, and historic houses from the early 1900s reflect the neighborhood "Actors Colony" group from Chicago who summered there many years. Buster Keaton, famous film director and actor, called Bluffton "home," and his sister owned Redbird Cottage.

Walk or drive 2 blocks (3/10 mile, 0.5 km) to Lake Michigan's award-winning clean beach at Pere Marquette Park, tour the submarine, bike the Shoreline Trail along Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake. It's only 15 minutes to more beaches, festivals, town events, art, music and theater, historic architecture, farmer's market, groceries, malls, and most everything else. MICHIGAN ADVENTURE AND WATERPARK (like Cedar Fair) is 13 miles (25 minutes). Stroll 1 block to end of street sandy ending at Muskegon Lake, sit on the bench and enjoy watching the boats pass while the young children play in the sand. An elementary school playground is 2 blocks down the street for off-beach activities.

2 Charming Cottages by Lake Michigan & Muskegon Lake, Bluffton

Year Purchased: 2004

Why the Owner Chose Muskegon

The Bluffton "Actors' Colony" area is on a peninsula between Lake Michigan and Muskegon Lake within the City of Muskegon. It's only 0.3 mile (0.5 km) west to the sugar sand beach of Pere Marquette Park - on the "Clean Beach Award" - and the south side of Muskegon Channel, and it's 1 block east to the shoreline of Muskegon Lake. It's centrally located to favorite spots like Holland, Grand Haven, to visit outside of Muskegon. The neighborhood is friendly, and the houses have been owned by the same families going back generations. This is as close as you get to having an "old-fashioned" beach vacation with modern amenities - no condos, not a resort.

The Unique Benefits at this House

Walk to Lake Michigan Pere Marquette beach or if you have gear to tote, drive and park free. Stroll 1 block to enjoy sunrises and watch sailboat and other boats on Muskegon Lake shoreline. Charming decor, comfortable furnishings, high quality dishes and cutlery, high-speed internet, old-fashioned, neighborly open front porch. In-town owner who personally manages everything.

A
Pere Marquette Park Beach

Pere Marquette Park beach has 1 1/2 miles of clean, sugar sand and a sidewalk for easy strolling or biking. You can walk or bike there (0.3 mile/0.5 km), but we recommend you take your car/van and park for free if you have have coolers, etc. to carry.

B
Captain Jack's Restaurant

Located on the beach, enjoy lunch inside or out on the deck. Volleyball courts are close to the deck. Sidewalk for bikers or walkers goes by the restaurant.

C
USS Silversides Submarine and Naval Museum

Tour the inside of a World War II submarine, and then visit the Great Lakes Maritime Museum adjacent. Both are located along the Muskegon Channel connecting Lake Michigan to Muskegon Lake. Only 3 minutes by car from either Redbird Cottage or Eagles Nest Cottage (of Bluffton Harbor Cottages).

D
Dockers Seafood Restaurant

Open summer season only, enjoy a delicious meal inside or on the patio overlooking the Harbour Towne Marina.

E
Muskegon Lake Beach

Small beach on Muskegon Lake. It's smaller and easier to reach the lake if you have small children, the water is warmer, and the waves are usually calmer than on Lake Michigan.

Owner's Map of Muskegon

We purchased the property because is it located in a friendly. historic area between two lakes and is close to many beaches, parks, festivals, and city summer and winter events. It is centrally located to other favorite spots near Muskegon - Grand Haven, Holland, and other beach towns.

PERFECT for families!

Guest: DeDe (Indianapolis, IN)
Date of Stay: 07/01/06 Review Submitted: 12/17/06

This home has truly everything you would want in a vacation home. Our family took our 1st (and 2nd!!) Family Vacations here with our very small children (6, 4, 2, 9 mos.). We couldn't have been more pleased. The place was exactly as described on the website and even better because the description did not stress how absolutely SPARKLING CLEAN the home is! We felt completely comfortable letting our children roam the house, play on the floor, sleep in the beautiful clean beds and ride their bikes on the quiet street! Access to Lake Michigan can be by bike, on foot or by car (30 second car ride). The beach is the cleanest we have experienced, was perfectly maintained and great for families. The owner has gone out of her way to decorate and accessorize her home for families with many children. The Pottery Barn accents spoiled us and we are very hard to please!

Amazing Place

This is even better in person than on the website. The pictures do not do the cottage justice. When I saw the pictures on the website, I was amazed. When I saw it in person, I fell in love with the place. I was there for 8 weeks on business beginning in October, and wished I could have stayed longer. I was as comfortable as if I were in my own home.

Beautiful Cottage to Escape From Life

Guest: Daniel F.
Date of Stay: 07/10/11 Review Submitted: 07/28/11

A couple friends and I rented this charming cottage for three days mid-July as a quick Summer retreat from life. The entire place is spotless, so clean we had no qualms whatsoever using the kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms, etc. Living spaces are cozy and comfortable. Backyard large and inviting, green and landscaped, with a good sized picnic table and a firepit. It is semi-private, though it does share a walkway with the property behind the house. The driveway is shared and the path from their to to the entrance of the other property goes through the backyard, around the firepit, but isn't overly intrusive. Not too far from the beach. Walkable, if you don't mind a 10-minute stroll, and one somewhat busy road. Owner was extremely helpful and pleasant, providing more accurate driving directions than Google, and exuding an extremely welcoming and friendly demeanor. The kitchen was fully stocked for preparing meals, with a decent amount of cookware, and some general cooking supplies (a few herbs and spices available). The neighborhood itself seemed a bit rundown as we drove in, some neighboring houses seemingly abandoned, but the property itself shines like a beacon amidst those darkened plots. I would recommend this location to anyone, especially families. Very close to shopping and the beach and other daytime activities. And very conducive to relaxing afternoons and evenings either indoors or out.

Red Bird Cottage Adorable

Guest: MGilles (Grand Rapids, MI)
Date of Stay: 06/03/11 Review Submitted: 06/13/11

We rented the cottage in preparation for our daughters wedding. It provided a beautiful photo backdrop for the bride-to-be and her bridesmaids. The day after the wedding it provided us room to relax. Although not directly on the water it was within walking distance of the beach. We would stay there again.

Very Clean!!! Awesome Place!

Guest: NARBOY (Warren, MI)
Date of Stay: 06/27/09 Review Submitted: 07/06/09

My family and I stayed here June 27th - July 3rd 2009 and would certainly go back again. The home is very clean and it was a home away from home for us. Everything is provided for, right down to dishes, linens, towels, soaps and more. It is beautifully decorated and in a charming neighborhood. It is a block away from the beach so you could walk, bike or ride. We loved sitting around the fire pit in the backyard in the evenings and many nights we could hear the waves. So relaxing. The owner (Jane) was wonderful to deal with and answered all our questions completely and promptly! If you are looking for someplace to relax on vacation this is the place. I cannot imagine staying in a hotel after our experience here.

A Gem in Muskegon

Date of Stay: 08/13/08 Review Submitted: 08/26/08

We had such a great time at Redbird Cottage that I don't know where to begin! The cottage was just as the description portrayed. It was clean, well stocked and adorable. The location was perfect -- so close to the beach! We really enjoyed reading about the history of the Bluffton area from the books that were in the cottage and loved the information book with restaurant and activity recommendations. Jane was a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend this cottage if you are visiting this area.

This is an adorable cottage. My family of 6 were very confortable. We rode to the beach and hung out inside during the rainy days and we weren't cramped for space. Top 3 Things: Location & good rates, amenities, and privacy. Don't miss: Sunset on Lake Michigan.
