Stay a week or stay a month. Enjoy the hot tub and the view and the peaceful days and nights alone or with your family!
Make a lifetime of vacation memories at 'Mama Bear' at Bear Lake. Amazing view of Lake and Mountains. Fish for trout or small mouth bass, enjoy the view from hot tub and large decks, shoot some pool, or just watch the leaves change color. This summer families have enjoyed kayaking, hiking to creeks and waterfalls, fishing, gem mining and much more! Enjoy 200 feet of shoreline, and private boat dock near the public boat access. Bring your boat and tour the waterfalls. Part of the Nantahala National Forest.
'Mama Bear', a remodeled older home(circa 1980's), is only a short drive to Sylva, Dillsboro, Cashiers, and Highlands. There are many fun things to do in Cherokee; and Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Dollywood are excellent 1 day excursions. Drive to Cataloochee and see the Elk or see a show at the Cherokee Casino. Call Western Carolina University to check the entertainment schedule and plan to catch a concert, play, athletic event, or craft show there. Mountain Heritage Day, held the last Saturday in September, is always a great reason to visit the area.
Though Mama Bear has several beds, the owner is also willing to price it right for a couple just wanting a quiet weekend alone.
Perfect getaway for a family. What a wonderful place for the whole family to share Thanksgiving or Christmas together. Sleeping includes 2 King beds, 2 Queen beds, 1 sleeper sofa. There are 2 Rock Gas-Log Fireplaces. Canoe, and life jackets available for use.

Wow, Mama Bear was awesome. We came to Mama Bear with 4 teenagers and had an absolutely fantastic experience. The house was very comfortably decorated. A perfect match between nicely decorated and comfortable cabin feel. It was not so cluttered with decor that you felt nervous about relaxing and enjoying yet I never once needed something that the cabin did not have. Our host was available to answer any questions before arrival yet the house was so well organized that I never needed to contact her during our stay. The home was thoroughly clean (I can't even imagine what the negative review on this site was referring to) and welcoming to to stay in. You absolutely cannot beat the outside lake view. Hot tub was wonderful, too. We didn't get out on the lake much as it was quite cold during our stay. Four wheel drive would make the driveway easier, but we were able to make it in our 2 wheel drive truck. Our kids just adored the downstairs level and we had several pool and ping pong tournaments. The house has many board games also. We did have trouble getting the DVD players to work correctly but all the more reason to get out and enjoy the mountains. I felt truly blessed to have been able to spend a week here. Hope to be able to do so again in the future.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, romantic getaway.

We LOVED it! Being on the lake was the best part for our free time - we loved the canoe and one of the guys brought his kayak as well. I can't believe how gorgeous it was on Saturday - perfect weather! (and then how chilly it got on Sunday as we headed down the mountain.) The living room was perfect for our study time. We learned a lot about God, each other, and how important community is.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Our stay at Mama Bear was such a blessing; each morning we watched the smoky mist crawl across the lake slowly revealing levels of spectacular views. The peace, the awe, the sense of serenity took all of the stress of daily life away. We were able to enjoy our kids and grandkids hiking, canoeing, fishing, and even an evening of campfire and smores. To top all of this off, I even read a book from the owner's bookshelf. Now that's what I call a vacation! The house was so well organized we had everything we needed to feed the large group, clean clothes, and weren't awaken early because of the great layout. Since we are city dwellers, the rustic mountain decor was enchanting and the hot tub was everyone's favorite place to hang out. Thank you again for providing such a special place for us city types to get away and experience the full beauty and rest of a Mama Bear retreat. Your helpful information was only exceeded by your warm hospitality.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thank you Richard. Hope you can come back soon!

The pictures can not do it justice. The views from Mama Bear are spectacular! If you are looking for a place to quietly retreat as a family or with friends, this cabin is perfect. It is very spacious, allowing our family to never feel on top of each other. Rooms are nicely furnished and decorated just as you'd imagine a lake cabin should be. Kitchen was well stocked with everything needed to cook up our meals. And did I mention that it's quiet. It is not a busy lake so time spent in the kayaks or canoe was truly relaxing, as was the hot tub! The owner was very thorough in helping us be prepared for our time at the cabin as well as answering any questions during our stay.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thank you Beth. I'm glad your family enjoyed the stay!

The unit was not advertised as upscale, however, it was also not advertised and not clean and needing lots of work. Many things were broken or damaged, paddle fans were coated in dust. The photos did not reflect that you could not leave doors/windows open as they were broken, dishwasher door caved in. I would not recommend this property. THe location was beautiful, but property not clean nor well maintainedDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Thank you for the use of your house for our retreat! We enjoyed the views, the water, and the house held all of us quite comfortably. Even though we were only 30 minutes from home, Mama Bear made us feel like we were in another world for just a few days! We even enjoyed the break from technology!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, families with young children.

I live in the mountains of WNC but had never vacationed here until now. Mama Bear helped me remember why I love these peaceful, majestic mountains so much! This cozy cabin in its tranquil setting made me fall in love with my back yard again! The lake waters were cool, the air was sweet, and the silence was (yes, I'll say it!) golden. Mama Bear had plenty of room and up-to-date ammenities and little touches that made us feel at home. I've never been to a vacation house kitchen that had a muffin tin, good selection of pots/pans, and a couple of huge casserole dishes. The decor isalso spot on. I felt like I was walking through the pages of a Southern Living feature house. This is a very special place. Thanks for a memorable vacation. I'm already pining to come again.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Wow Danell, you sound like a professional writer/critic:) Thanks for your review! I'm glad I got to meet you and hope our paths cross again! Thank you for choosing Mama Bear.

We stayed 10 nights at Mama Bear, on Bear Creek Lake and would happily have stayed another 10! We have 4 children, ages 6-12 and kept busy in the area and on the lake each and every day. The lakeside home is very clean and well maintained. 4 comfortable bedrooms without counting the pullout couches and 3 full bathrooms. The house is very well situated at the northern end of the lake and it feels as if the lake is entirely yours most of the time. The kitchen is very well equipped, as is the rest of the home and all of the appliances are fairly new. Having a wsher and dryer means we should have packed alot less (I'll know for next time). Pool table in the basement and hot tub on the porch overlooking the lake - what a way to unwind! 2 BBQs (gas and charcoal). The house is much more spacious than I might have imagined from the pictures, with many different sitting and living areas. 4 different porches overlooking the lake, all with greaa views. We rented the canoe and 2 kayaks - highly recommended - 45-60 minute paddle to end of lake to a beautiful waterfall that is not on any map. Views of the lake are among the best on the entire lake as there are very few trees blocking the way and long views in front of the home. The owners/hosts were outstanding and very helpful in orienting us to the area. The lake home is about 20 minutes to Silva and 30 minutes to Cashiers - Silva has a Food Lion, Ingles (2 large supermarkets) and Walmart. Most of the most beautiful waterfalls in NC are within 45 minutes of the house. 40 minutes to Smoky mountain national park and 1 hr to Asheville/Biltmore. Overall, very well maintained home with beautiful, clean lake and centrally located, Enjoy!!!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, girls getaway, sightseeing, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Thank you for your thorough review! We enjoyed meeting your sweet family. So glad you made it to that amazing waterfall! We hope you made lifetime memories for a lifetime at Bear Lake:)

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: We purchased this home because of the view in 2005. Mama Bear was built in 1985 and needed some upgrades. While we have already done many remodeling projects at Mama Bear, we look forward to being able to upgrade & complete more projects in the future. We look forward to enjoying relaxing days there in the future. We live 20 minutes from Bear Lake and are thankful each time we read the guest book and see that other families have enjoyed staying at Mama Bear.
Why the Owner Chose Cashiers:
We chose to buy a vacation rental in this location because of the amazing view! We enjoy the peace and quiet, the beautiful lake, the mountains that change with each season, and the wildlife we've seen while canoeing. We also liked it's rustic charm....this is NOT an upscale home.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We've enjoyed watching beavers, osprey, and skunk :), catching walleye & large mouth bass, roasting marshmallows, hot-tubbing, canoeing, and just enjoying the quiet at Mama Bear.
