We called Bob on Wednesday night (last minute) to stay Friday thru Sunday in Canaan Valley. We contacted the owner by phone during dinner, and he was VERY accomodating and wonderful to work with. Truth be told, we were pleasantly surprised to learn that Aspenwoods was one of TWO properties the owners had, and he offered up either of them for a short notice two nights stay. In addition, this owner doesn't charge any of the customary "hot tub electric" fees, or any of those rental fees that the realty companies do (a TRUE savings). Also, the home was beautiful and clean, and although it's situated close off the main road, there was ZERO noise or sounds except for crickets and birds. The lake was a little low due to lack of rainfall in the area, so taking the canoes out didn't seem like a good idea. This home is perfect for up to 8 people easily, with games and a fully functional kitchen, including a very nice hot tub on the deck, firewood, and a grill. Beds were newer pillowtops and comfortable! We brought our own towels (we always do) so we didn't even notice theirs. There is a VERY big bathtub in the master bedroom which was so nice! It was easy to find and easy to get the key. Bob, thank you so much for your welcoming charm and for working closely with to make the transaction and stay very, very smooth! Hi Bob - Thank you so much for renting your lovely home to us this past weekend. We had a great time! It was FRIGID, but we got 8 inches of snow and skiing was great for the girls and my husband. Your maintenance man, Donnie, could not have been nicer. He checked in on us regularly to make sure we were able to get in and out of the drive in the snow. I called at 8:00 p.m. Thursday night for a reservation the next day, A couple of E-mails later, directions and all the information we needed. It really could not have been any easier. The house is beautiful. The location is amazingly quiet. The hot tub is perfect. We had an exceptional three day relaxing weekend. Bob could not have been any nicer or accommodating. I have never been on vacation where it felt like at the end of the day we were home. We would get home, cook dinner, hit the hot tub for an hour or so, then make a fire and just sit. The black river falls and the horseback riding down the road were just the kind of no stress relaxing activities we were hoping for. I would recommend this to anyone and hope to make it back myself someday. Thank you again Bob for a great experience.

Hello Bob, We were pleased with our stay. The location is easy to find and the directions were good. I did find the emails from you helpful, but somewhat hard to read through because of all the details. :-) The key box at the house was very convenient. All living areas were comfortable and clean - the kitchen was very well stocked. I loved the spacious interior and large windows. The front deck was very inviting and spacious. I only enjoyed the hot tub once but it is always a welcome treat to have.

I'm not sure of anything that could truly be improved. My husband loved speaking with Bob and found him to be extremely kind, interesting to speak with, and very helpful in suggesting attractions and places to visit. The personal touches extended to us through Bob's phone calls to the cabin made us feel like true guests. It was a wonderful experience, and we would highly recommend this home to others.

Convenient location. Good floorplan for families. Note the negative comments by others about cleanliness and threadbare towels. We agree with both criticisms. The place was dusty and the towels looked like yard sale rejects. Our biggest disappointment, however, dealt with the owner's ethics. We observed that one of the dining room chairs needed re-gluing and, since we didn't need it, we simply used the others. Because we did not report this seemingly minor detail to the owner, he retained the entire security deposit (but refused to provide evidence of any actual repair costs -- probably a few drops of wood glue) and sent us a series of insulting emails that accused us of causing the damage and questioned our honesty. While we long ago gave up on recovering the deposit and we waited several months to post this review, our memories of the entire experience remain very negative and we would not recommend this unit to friends or family. (Note that the owner has also misleadingly posted reviews here that pertain to his other Canaan property called "Interlude".)

Owner response:We call every Guests, first night and you made no mention of any problems..in fact you said everything was fine? Could it be you were upset that we did pass on the repair charge for the chair you folks broke? By the way we only charged a small part of your Security deposit..you should find a credit on your bill for the balance. We send a survey to every guest staying at our home... over the last year 94% said our homes are neat and orderly. As you read the other responses you will see we are relatively easy to deal with, and very responsive. We are trying to rent our home, why would we be any other way...AND, we offer a discount to get you to come back. But not if you break furniture. Our Housekeeper and My Wife goes thru the kitchen, the towels and the linens. I ask them to remove anything they wouldn't use themselves. That is why our percentages of approval are so high. I wish VRBO would incorporate a survey instead of individuals' being able to post whatever they wanted to avoid situations such as this!

My family and I greatly enjoyed our winter vacation to Canaan Valley and the home rental we stayed at. Everything was very detailed and just as the owners had stated in their prearrival package. The area was extremely beautiful and the locals were very accommodating, friendly and helpful. For the price of the home rental compared to a family vacation elsewhere, you can't beat the value. Our 2 children both learned how to ski and received a new appreciation for the winter scenery and sports. We would highly recommend this location and rental company for anyone looking for a fantastic family vacation. We will be rebooking in the future.

We were lucky to have spent 5 days at Aspenwoods during Labor Day week as result of a last minute reservation which Bob was so helpful with. This was one of the most quiet, peaceful trips we have ever had as the few surrounding homes were sparsely occupied. The beautiful lake was quite close and the fishing was good. Cell phones really don't work in the home, and are spotty at best even outside so consider bringing a calling card since the house phone is restricted to local calls. The home was generally tidy but could use some TLC and a thorough cleaning of nooks and crannies. It is nice that linens and towels are provided although they are pretty well worn. Although quite passable, the restaurant choices are limited in the area (no chains of any type) so the large kitchen is helpful and all the basics are provided. The washer and dryer are also a very nice convenience as you don't have to pack as much. The hot tub under the stars was a fabulous way to end each day...

Thanks for the note. We loved the house and hope to come back this fall. It was well kept and prepared - The master suite was great! My girlfriend really appreciated the bathroom and the kitchen was very functional. We didn't get to use the fireplace but look forward to that when we get back there. As for the deposit , I would appreciate it if you could return it via US mail. Thanks and we'll touch base when we plan our next trip there.

WONDERFUL!!! Our weekend was spectacular. You were right about the hot tub, very relaxing. We loved the king size bed, we probably would have tried to take it with us if it could have fit in the car. We enjoyed out time very much and found the communication with you very good via email. We are very familiar with the area,having gone there for over 20 years,however we still found out about new things via the info in the cabin and the websites. House was tidy and we enjoyed the living/den areas and hottub and the beds were nice and comfortable. (One friend liked being able to watch the playoffs in the den while we did other things in the living room.) No problem with directions or key; House is easy to find. Price is competitive. We always enjoy Dolly Sods and we tried Amelia's restaurant and really liked it.Tried to ride the train out of Elkins but they were full and did not return my multiple calls the day before when we tried to reserve a spot. O well...maybe next year.

We did enjoy the house - it was beautiful. There are a lot of things to do in the area as well, we had a good time! We are actually tossing around the idea of a winter vacation to the area with some family and friends, just don't have a date in mind yet. Your house would be perfect to use!I did a lot of research to find a competitive rate on lodging for our honeymoon, and out of all of the resorts in the area, your rates were the best and most reasonable. That's a great price for such a lovely house! I think when I was searching, I just went onto the Canaan Valley website and navigated from there (it's been a while, so I think that's how I found it). Your response time to my inquiry was excellent and you provided a wealth of information on the website as to the area, attractions, restaurants, etc. that was very useful to us. The payment process was smooth, the directions were great, the whole process was enjoyable. We really enjoyed eating at the Blackwater Brewing Company and Mutley's. We enjoyed all of the activities that we did - we visited Blackwater Falls, rode the ski lift and took a hike at the Canaan Resort, played miniature golf, drove over to Cass for a ride on the train, and visited lots of little shops along the way. I would definitely recommend the house and area if asked.Hopefully we'll be talking to you soon regarding a winter vacation - thank you for your hospitality!

Thanks for letting us stay in your home. Everyone thought the house was great and had a wonderful time. Everything was smooth and easy during the booking and payment process. The only problem we really encountered during the whole trip was the directions that map quest gave but even that was a minor problem. The discount is definitely something that sparks my interest in returning. The internet was very helpful in finding stores and restaurants. I thought the price was great...Your price was very reasonable and I had no complaints whatsoever. I also thought the security deposit was reasonable as well. The key safe was also a nice thing to have. The house in general seemed to be in order. The hot tub was a big hit after being on the slopes all day but my personal favorite was the balcony off the master bedroom. I thought there was plenty of furniture, both inside and outside. I can't comment on the games or TVs because I didn't use them. I usually would grab a book and just enjoy the quiet. I think you should leave things the way they are. It was perfect. I would definitely consider returning to AN INTERLUDE during the winter, I was also interested in your other house ASPENWOODS as well but I think that would be more of a summer/spring house. everything was perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We rented this house with 4 other friends in March 2006, and we had a blast! It was close to slopes - we walked to lift and could see skiers going down beginner's trail from the balcony! Plus, it was a short drive to Cannan Valley-we didn't ski there, but we went tubing and had fun! Everything else we needed was there - dishes, washer/dryer and of course, HOT TUB! Only down - kind of hard to find if you're coming in at night. I would definitely come back to Interlude!!

WE had a great time at Canaan! Your house is beautiful and the whether on Saturday was perfect and the tree colors were at their peak. We went to Smoke Hole caverns and drove over Dolly Sods. The view was spectacular! We then went to Seneca Rock and climbed all the way to the observation point. We had 4 adults and 3 children ages 5, 4 and 11 months (our grandchildren). They did great and really enjoyed the trip. Thanks again! We cleaned the house before we left and hope that it was good enough to get our deposit back and get the 5% discount for future visits. We have 3 more grandchildren who live in Indiana that we would like to bring down here to take skiing (at least the 2 eldest, they are 6, 4 and 1). Thanks Again!

We just spent five wonderful day at Aspenwood. We could not have asked for a more pleasant place to stay.The home was well furnished,the kitchen provided all that was required for our home cooking. We loved the hot tub and and deck was great for just relaxing. Everyone enjoyed the short walk to the lake and were always competing with each other to see who was going to catch the most fish. We will be using Aspenwoods agin on our next trip to Cannan Valley.

WE JUST ADDED high speed internet... did you use it? yes did you like being connected? yes and no :-) it's nice to be connected, especially so we could plan our days and research the area. but it's always tempting to check in at work as well. loved your website. i am much more likely to do business with someone who has a professional, and good looking, website. it is also nice to have lots of pic when deciding on a rental. we loved the key safe... and in fact might get one for our house so we are never locked out again! and there was no fear of losing the key.it was definitely more affordable than going to the beach, or wintergreen, which were the two places we were thinking in the beginning. loved the hot tub. loved the decks. loved the lake and playgroundwent to blackwater falls, did the petting zoo, and ate lunch on the way out of town. we also walked to the lake a couple of times, and took our son to the tot lot. both were nice. we were mostly there to relax. would like to bring some friends in the winter for skiing, etc. maybe try an interlude. Thanks :-) We had a great time... wish we could have stayed longer.

We had a wonderful time at Canaan!! The house is beautiful. The 3 kids picked their bedrooms as soon as we got there but as I expected they ended up sleeping in the living room each night. We spent most of our time fishing, it was a great experience for the kids,almost every time they dropped their line in the water they caught a fish. We spent Wednesday at Blackwater Falls and Smoke Hole Caverns. Just wanted to take a few minutes to say thanks for renting your house to us. The house was great and the hot tub was enjoyed by all. After the rain on Wednesday, the weather could not have been better...low humidity and sun with some puffy clouds. We biked on Thursday, thanks to the guys at the bike outfitter in Davis (just down from the Bright Morning Inn).(Blackwater Bikes) They could not have been easier to work with...or more helpful or fair. They did a lot of repairs on the two bikes we had with us and then didn't charge us for those repairs because one of our rentals had some trouble (which they came and fixed on the trail.) I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND them for anyone wanting to bike. There was a great trail along Blackwater river that was easy enough for the kids. We ended up biking 8 miles. Fishing was so much fun for all of us! It was a great way to fill time while dinner was cooked, etc. It really helped that we could fish right within the community. My brother-in-law and his family went whitewater rafting with Blackwater Outdoor Adventures. They had a great time. My husband and I and twins used their shuttle service to drop our kayaks in the Cheat. Everyone there was also super to work with. We kayaked 6 miles down the river. What a great time! We also did the hike to Bald Knob and picked wild blueberries along the trail. We ate at Bright Morning Inn, Sirrianna's, and the Purple Fiddle. All of the restaurants hit the spot when we needed it. No time for a massage, but the activity energized all of us. Did not try for a babysitter because we were so busy being outside. If it had rained, a babysitter may have been good for everyone. Again, many thanks and, you are right, it was better than being at the beach :).

Our Guests are truly our BEST customers! SECURITY DEPOSIT...It was a very acceptable amount, you have to take care of what's yours. I'm not a fan of over the web payments but using Pay pal was painless. The key safe was a great idea and it was awesome to just pull up to the house and not have to worry about checking in. For the location and how beautiful the house was I felt it was underpriced. You can't beat a 3 minute walk to the slopes and an outdoor hottub waiting for you at the end of the day. Keep out the internet, it's a perfect place to escape the world and enjoy a weekend of fun on the slopes. Thanks so much for the memories.

Note from Owner: since this comment; because of several requests by our Guests, we have installed DSL internet connection at both our homes~~so bring your Laptop~or, Don't! I just wanted to let you know that we all had a wonderful stay at an Interlude over the New Years Weekend. We were very pleased with the house and enjoyed the area. Here are the answers to the questions. 1) I found the house via VRBO website using google. 2) I really like the website of the house and found it very helpful in providing details about the house. 3) The security deposit is exceptable and the process was easy. 4) The key safe is a great idea. It took the stress out of my hands for having to keep up with a key. 5) The price of the house seemed to be a decent price compared to similar houses in the area. Initiallty we looked at snowshoe, however homes in this area were more expensive and not as nice. 6) I thinkg the house had a warm cozy feel but with plenty of room. I like the picture of you chilling in the tube on the river. We did a lot of cooking and the kitchen had the necessary items. The only suggestion would be adding a sink disposal. We spent a lot of time in the living room and found it comfortable. I like the surround sound and big coffee table. 7) The house was clean when we arrived 8) Overall i was happy with the house. I especially liked the fireplace, open kitchen, front room for storing boots and shoes, hottub and deck with view of creek, upstairs room and big bed, skylights. 9) Internet connection would be great to have even though it is nice to disconnect from the outside world. 10) If it were my house I would mount outdoor speakers directly below the gabled roof. 11) I definatly would not move the TV out ot the living room. Good place to watch some football games and movies. 12) We did not spend much time on the deck but i imagine if i were there in the summer/spring/fall i would like to a comfy chair. 13) We played cards mostly. 14)TV situation is good. Cannan Valley We mostly spend our time skiing at Timberline and chilling at the house. The only time we ate out of the house was for new years eve at the lodge. I think i will return next year in the winter.
