Casa D'Oliva is a wonderful place to stay. I went with 4 other women, rented a car and toured around Umbria and Tuscany in Ocotber of 2010. We came home each night to this warm and welcoming home. It is beautiful, quiet and authentically Italian! There is plenty of private and communal space. The gals who care take are lovely and helpful with suggestions. We would all go back together or with another group. Enjoy!! Quiet/ Remote - yet in thoroughly integrated with the mountains, villages and city-states that provide historical context, this lovely home provides a comfortable environment for a base to explore central and northen Umbria. Tinkling bells from sheep herds, occasional truffle hunters, and the whisper (truly) of the pines are the primary sounds. Local trattorias - and restaurants - are a serious liablity as are the muliple vineyards; one has dinner for lunch and then dinner for dinner. But you can walk it off on the sinuous upland road that brings you to the Casa. Reccommend? Mercy. Without any reservationsRecommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway, adventure seekers.
Owner response: Bill - so glad that you had a good holiday at Casa d'Oliva and hope to see you again soon! Betsy & Cliffe

The four of us arrived at the house with Antonella after doing some grocery shopping at Coop in Umbertide and were amazed at how beautiful the property was. The photos don't do it justice. Antonella showed us everything we needed to know about the house and left us to explore and relax. The house is beautiful inside and out, well-appointed and set up perfectly with plenty of privacy for 2 couples. We each had our own bedroom and bath on different floors. The yard, patio and grounds were in full bloom and the pool was a great place to relax, read and have meals. We were close enough to all the Hill Towns we'd heard so much about so took day trips to Cortona, Assisi and Montefalco using the Day Trip sheets that you left with all of the information on restaurants and things to do and see. One day we had Dana come to the house and had massage by the pool and also had a delicious Umbrian meal catered at the house by Mel. He's such fun! We hope to return to Casa d'Oliva for another holiday one day - it was really wonderful!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3

We arrived at Casa d’Oliva imagining long impossibly lazy days doing precious little in the late September sun . . . The house is even more beautiful than Betsy’s pictures show, and the setting and views over the nearby hills conspired to keep us indolent & happy by the pool. In reality the lure of Cortona (stunning) and Gubbio (fascinating and real), along with the market in Umbertide (serious bargains even for a man!) and the drive to Lake Trasimene, proved irresistible! In all ways a splendid place and a wonderful holiday”Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+.

I stayed at Casa d'Oliva in May 2008. I loved it. It was the perfect combination of old world charm and modern amenities. The owners had just installed a new oven, which we used very often. The grounds are beautiful. The villa is very comfortable, and the kitchen is totally stocked. We loved eating outside on the back patio overlooking the olive trees and the hills. Even the road up the mountain is exciting, but recommend that you do your day trips during the day and return to the villa before night fall. Lots of information on Tuscany and Umbria. We loved Gubbio, Deruta and Cortona in particular. Would consider returning, but in June because the pool wasn't open yet. Highly recommend.Recommended for: Romantic getaway.

this is a truly splendid property, with wonderful facilities and a spectacular view. inside and out it is immaculate, yet you do not feel that you are intruding on someone else's home - you feel it is 'yours'. the biggest drawback is the 15-minute drive up and down the mountain to get to and from the property. we did not dare go out to eat at night because of the trip up and down (not a problem for us - my husband is a wannabe celebrity chef and delights in creating evening gastronomy). as you have to drive everywhere, you couldn't have a drink out with your meal. all that said, we got used to it. just be brave. it's ok. and we did go out to eat at a wonderful restaurant on a neighbouring hill and wish we'd done so earlier. if we spoke italian and had our hiking boots, we'd have been in seventh heaven. thank you elizabeth.Recommended for: Sightseeing.

Casa d’Oliva is well off the beaten track and offers tranquil surroundings despite the neighbouring villa; this could be an excellent choice of venue to finish that novel. The Villa itself is a delight, clean and airy with everything you could need but most especially a large comfortable bed with mosquito net. We were very pleased to have opted for the agreeable first night meal. The house is ideally suited to a couple with (or better still without) young children. A second couple could sleep in the open plan upstairs area but would not have much privacy - if that is not an issue then the space is available. Do not expect to do much because with the large grounds, wonderful pool, beautiful views, exotic bird-life and remote location there is no obvious reason to leave other than for food and supplies. Do not bother buying a guide book either, partly because you may not do as much as you had planned and partly because you will find more visitor information than you need in the house. The few other villas sharing the mountainside are not at all intrusive but are mostly holiday homes so your neighbours, should you meet them, are more likely to speak English or German than Italian. This should not spoil your stay but does explain the need for the security measures. The immediate region offers quite enough low-key tourist activity when the need arises, with stunning views available on the road to Lake Trasimeno, Citta Di Castello and Umbertide are well worth a visit and there are a number of beautiful villages a short distance from Casa d’Oliva, Montone being particularly striking. The house and pool are well kept, communication with the owner was excellent and everything was at least as good if not better than expected.Recommended for: Romantic getaway.

About the owner: We are an American couple Cliffe Raymond and Betsy Fenik who love Italy and especially Umbria. In the United States we own a manufacturing company and make parts for boats. Cliffe is an avid cyclist and loves riding both in Italy and here in Rhode Island. I am a photographer and am very lucky to spend lots of time making pictures all over Italy and New England.
Why the Owner Chose Umbertide:
We vacationed in Umbria and fell in love with the people, the countryside, the food, the wine and the pace of life. We hope to retire there someday, but in the meantime we are happy to share our little piece of heaven on earth with those who want to slow down and really enjoy life. Our home is a bit remote, but that is exactly what makes it the perfect get-away. Its position up the mountain affords you spectacular views and plenty of peace while its nearness to town (15 minutes) enables you to enjoy dining out and other activities. If sightseeing is what you like Casa d’Oliva is situated near to all the “hill towns” of Umbria and Tuscany. Easy day trips include Cortona, Assisi, Gubbio, Pienza, Montefalco and Florence is a 1 hour 20 minute train ride away.
The Unique Benefits at this Villa:
Eat breakfast under the ivy covered pergola or on the balcony. Spend the day sunning and swimming at the pool. Enjoy a catered dinner on the patio. Please stop and smell the roses. Feel free to pick them too. Enjoy all the flowers here and be sure to use the herbs in the pots on the patio for delicious, fresh pasta dishes. Make sure to be up at the pool each evening for a beautiful sunset. On a clear night lie out on the pump house roof and watch for shooting stars. Enjoy the sounds of the country; the cuckoo, crickets, song birds. At night you can hear the frogs and birds. Slow down, take your time, experience everything here. Italy runs on slow time. So should you when on holiday.
