Enchanting Hilltop House with spectacular view of Portofino. Located in Zoagli, Rapallo-Portofino area, Liguria, Italy (30 minutes from Genova; 45 minutes from Cinque Terre)
Perched on a terraced hillside with olive trees, "Il Frantoio di Piero" is a two-story property overlooking the Bay of Tigullio and Portofino, on the famous Italian Riviera. The combination of quiet country life with the proximity to the seacoast makes this place unique.
You wake up to the lovely sound of birds, have full access to an extensive landscaped garden with bougainvillaea, roses, herbs, cherry, apricot, peach, prune trees and grapes, then go for a swim or a daily excursion, and relax at dinner on a panoramic terrace, enchanted by the view of boats sailing through the beautiful Portofino Bay at sunset.
The large terrace, equipped with deck chairs and shadowed by a large umbrella, is also used for sunbathing, reading, and relaxing. The character of this property is part of Portofino’s world heritage, where clusters of houses have kept their original architecture and colors, and the hill presents steep terraces of cultivated land.
Inside the house, the salon and dining areas, and master bedroom are painted to reflect the colors from the garden: sage and blood-colored orange, pistachio and sunflower yellow. The floors are all terracotta tiled and raw linen curtains frame the views of the sea and garden and bring shade.
The ground floor consists of a fully-equipped kitchen with five appliances: gas cooker, oven, dishwasher, washing machine, and fridge, a dining/sitting room that opens directly onto the terrace, with a decorative fireplace, television, VCR, a stereo, and a good collection of tourist books. The couch in the salon is a double pull out bed.
On the second floor is a master bedroom with a king size bed and two windows, a small bedroom with two single beds and a nice Juliet balcony overlooking the terrace. This room makes a wonderful small writing studio that has a desk. On this floor is the bathroom with shower and bidet, closet space, and a single pull out bed. There is also a crib available. Linens, blankets, and towels are included in the rent and are ample for seven people.
The small village above the house (S. Pietro di Rovereto) has a small alimentary (grocery) store that can supply food and deliver. The seaside village of Zoagli - only 15 minutes walk has excellent food stores. Close by is the old town of Chiavari which has a daily street market, a monthly antique market, boutiques and bars, and many pasta stores with pesto alla Genovese and delicious focaccia bread.
You can choose to swim in Zoagli where there is a pebble beach, rocks, and a nice small swimming pool perched over the sea walk, or drive to sandy beaches of Moneglia and Framura. There are easy day trips to Portofino, either by boat or car, and highly recommended is a boat excursion to the 16th century Abbey of San Fruttuoso. - The Abbey is set in a secluded bay, reachable only by boat, or a steep walk across Portofino mountain.
The house is a perfect spot to plan a trek to the Cinque Terre- a United Nations heritage trail, linking the five towns from Rio Maggiore to Monterosso. From the house there are easy train connections through Chiavari, about 6 km from the house.
The city of Genoa is only 30 minutes by car and 40 by train. Genoa, a medieval sea republic fighting against Venice and Pisa, has one of the largest preserved historical centers of Europe, and was recently renovated in the area of its old harbour by famous Genoese architect Renzo Piano (Georges Pompidou Centre). There you can visit a magnificent aquarium, walk through the narrow carrugi roads, and see the new opera house by Aldo Rossi.
Excursions to Tuscany (Pisa, Lucca) and France can take 1-2 days, and many trails are available in the surroundings of the house. Il Frantoio di Piero, originally an oil pressing building dating back to the 18th century, has private outdoor parking just below the house and garden. Additional pictures available on request.
