My husband and I stayed in the Garden Apartment at Calvados for our Honeymoon in February of 2012. We were very happy with our choice to stay there! The garden apartment was perfect for us – a little kitchenette, big French doors to a private patio with 2 chairs and a table, and the most absolutely perfect view you could ask for, overlooking the ocean, the sunset, and Monsarrett. Our host, David, was an absolute pleasure. He is from England but moved to the island years ago. Joining him for a drink to look at our map of the island so he could show us the best beaches, the best places to eat, and other places to visit gave us a huge advantage. He is very considerate of your privacy, but my husband and I found ourselves seeking him out for a drink and visit several times. The location of the house is ideal for all of the people in the world like my husband and I who want to get away from it all. If you love the outdoors you will love this place. It’s as far away from the Sandal’s resorts and the cruise ships as you can get on the island, allowing you to really enjoy the natural beauty of the land, the animals, and the ocean. We never heard a car or another person the entire time we were staying there, yet the house is very close to Falmouth Harbor where many private yachts dock, meaning there are several to-die-for restaurants very close by!! I would recommend this place to everyone who wants a quite wonderful time away. There are beaches to explore nearby, and the cliff side pool at the house is just perfect for a dip. We had a tour of the main house as well and it would also be a great place to stay. The home was built about 20 years ago, focusing on great patios and amazing views. My only advice to travelers to Antigua-no matter where you stay-is bring your own coffee (only instant on the island) and bring lots of bug spray for the time around dusk – mosquitos come out, and you are going to want to watch the sunset without getting eaten. I have read the one review on VRBO about “paradise boot camp” in response to that I would say that if you are visiting a third world country and expect everything to be just like it is in the US, then maybe the Sandals mass resort is more your speed. However, I could not have loved Calvados Heights more and would absolutely recommend this wonderful location. If you have any questions about our stay or experiences it would be my pleasure to email with you! almastaub (at) gmail (dot) com.

Had a super time at Calvados Heights
Had a super time at Calvados Heights
Our first trip to Antigua, January 2012. We were fortunate enough to stay at Calvados Heights and I can't say enough about the place. The owner, David, is a gracious and gregarious host. He took every trouble to ensure our comfort, from reserving a rental car for us in advance to providing a "starter pack" of groceries upon our arrival (the latter most useful when you arrive late in the afternoon on New Year's Eve and most of the shops are shut). The house itself is breezy, large and comfortable, and is in a setting that has to been seen to be believed. Perched on a cliff about 120 feet above the sea, Calvados Heights overlooks the beautiful Turtle Bay, on Antigua's south coast. If if hadn't been for our kids' constant agitating for action-packed adventures, my wife and I could easily have simply spent the week sitting on Calvados Heights' open-air dining terrace, overlooking the swimming pool and the bay beyond, not to mention Montserrat and Guadalupe in the distance. We agree with the previous reviewer that the house was very clean and that the air-conditioners worked fine. This being the Caribbean, doors are left open all the time (for breezes) and it is unreasonable to expect that the odd critter or bird won't come in. At nighttime, the generously sized mosquito nets over the beds ensure you'll be safe and sound. Calvados Heights' owner is more than happy to share his ideas for activities and eats (including "cheap and cheerful" child-friendly eateries), and on more than one occasion made restaurant reservations for us. Additionally, as we had come with a view to perhaps buying a villa in Antigua, David patiently endured my wife's and my relentless questions about estate agents and so on. From Calvados Heights, the drive to what David calls "the village" is 15-20 minutes (about 5 miles), the "village" being the shopping and restaurant area at English Harbour, the bay immediately east of Falmouth Harbour. There are also some grocery shops and the like in Falmouth itself, about 2 miles distant and through which you must pass to get to English Harbour. As for Antigua in general, it is a beautiful island. Things you must do include the forest-canopy zipline tour, the Stingray City stingray-petting tour, an evening or two in the restored historic section of English Harbour, and a trip to Shirley Heights, overlooking English Harbour. All told, we were thrilled with our Antigua holiday and our Calvados Heights stay, and are looking forward to the next one.

A great retreat with friends
A great retreat with friends
We just recently returned from our stay in Calvados Heights in Antigua and we had a great time. From the initial interactions and the handling of rental cars including delivery to the house! Followed by welcome upon arrival and ideas and suggestions for eating out. A stunning location and a great villa for lazing by the pool or enjoying friends company over dinner in the open air. Secluded enough but within a short striking distance of English harbour, restaurants and beaches. We found the villa to be extremely clean and Carol took good care of us. I feel I must address a couple of points on a previous review. The villa was spotlessly clean and we saw one bug in a shower tray in 9 days. There was no sign of vermin. The A/C units blew cold and were easily adjustable on remote controllers and were NOT on any form of timer. You are visiting a tropical Island with all that that entails. I would highly recommend this property.

Great Vacation - Calvados Heights 1 week review
Great Vacation - Calvados Heights 1 week review
My husband and I along with our 16 and 20 year old daughters rented the house for a week in February 2011. The views are incredibly spectacular – 5 star views, 3 star accommodations. David, the owner is a gracious host. He lives in the apartment on a lower level with his friendly dog and welcomed us with a drink and provided start up groceries. He made excellent beach and restaurant recommendations. The house has a well stocked kitchen and bedrooms and bathrooms are clean and comfortable. The house is designed for indoor/outdoor living. We never needed to turn a.c. on as there was plenty of cross ventilation and cool breezes, We used bug spray for mosquitoes at night and that worked. We had an occasional frog in the house and saw dozens of banana twits and hummingbirds each morning feeding from the upper terrace feeders. Occasionally a bird flew in and out of the house. You need a 4 x 4 (jeep) to navigate the roads and driveway. We explored different beaches each day, ate lunch out most days and came home to swim, enjoy the sunset and often stayed in for dinner. Our favorite beaches were on the Caribbean side – after a short drive thru a rainforest. Particularly the beach in front of Gideons restaurant. Near the house are lovely small beaches around Falmouth harbor including the beach on front of Calabash restaurant and at Pigeons Bay. Great sailing out of Falmouth harbor and plenty of good restaurants too. On the Atlantic side we liked Half Moon Bay for a beautiful non-spoiled beach - no chair rentals; Long Bay Beach on the Atlantic side has chair rentals but limited food choices - we found it crowded with cruise ship visitors and vendors and was windy the day that we went. We had lunch at Harmony Hall for lunch on the day we visited Half Moon Bay. It was good enough and the views are lovely. We think it would have been very difficult to navigate the roads to Harmony Hall at night as the roads are narrow and full of potholes and driving is on the left,English style. So we did most of our exploring in daylight. Road signage is terrible. Around Falmouth Harbor we had good lunches at Calabash beachfront restaurant and good swimming at Galleon Beach. We drove to Dickinson bay 1 day(about an hour from the house) - pretty beach, more crowded as lots of resorts built up on the beach, walk past Sandals to rent chairs and plenty of places for lunch or drinks. Dickinson Bay is close to the best grocery store . Highly recommend this rental and Antigua

A huge thank you to you and Honda for making our holiday one to treasure. We really did have the most wonderful time with Calvados Heights and its residents being largely responsible for it. The place is more beautiful than the pictures. The only problem is the bugs and the lack of air conditioning. The views are breathtaking, the pool is great, and the house is lovely, but the bugs ate my children alive. There are no screens in the house so the bugs live with you. You have to keep the doors open for the ocean breeze (which would be great if they had a screen) because there isn't any air conditioning in the villa other then the bedrooms and they are on a timer and a temperature that you can NOT control. It felt like living in a Boot camp. Imagine you can not control the Temperature when you sleep or at what time you would like the air turned on, and you paid for that!. And now I haven't even mentioned the roaches in the kitchen and a Rat that made a grand appearance. Needless to say we stayed three days and then went to the Saint James Hotel for the rest of the week. We did not ask for a refund, nor do we want one. I am only writing because I wished I would have known what I was getting into before I went there.

What an incredible villa you have! The pictures on the website don't do it justice. From the sounds of the waves crashing on the rocks below, to sharing breakfast on the veranda with the hummingbirds, to seeing the butterflies dance around all the beautiful plants you have surrounding the property with one word comes to mind: spectacular. You are the comensurate host. From your inaurgural get aquainted home made "rum punch" to your concierge service of making all our dinner reservations, you are truly what I consider an "english gentleman". You were gracious enough to guide our daily decision making after listening to what we wanted to do. You need to let other renters know that you have lived on the island for over 25 years. This wealth of information kept us from making the usual "tourist" vacation mistakes. The restaurants, the beaches, the views, the sights, the people you know all made this holiday most memorable. Thank you and special thanks to your dog, Honda, who loved to check in on us occasionally to make sure we were doing fine.
