From the house’s wooden terrace, there is an incredible view of the village, its small port and the vividly painted boats. About Marzamemi: The fisherman’s cottage has been renovated with an eye to conserving the heritage of the local area. The house is situated right on the promenade of Marzamemi, which is an ancient fishing village in the extreme southeast of Sicily. From the terrace, there is an incredible view of the village, its small port and the vividly painted boats. The tradition of all things marine is still very much alive in Marzamemi today. Only recently has it become a popular destination for Italians who enjoy the combination of the area’s natural beaches and the vibrancy of an authentic coastal village. The village boasts many restaurants, pizzerias and shops selling delicious local produce such as locally caught and processed tuna and swordfish or the famous cherry tomatoes from nearby Pachino.

Guestbook: 'The setting of the cottage is about the most beautiful place we have ever been.'

'We enjoyed our stay in Casa del Pescatore and thought the location of the cottages was wonderful. Marzamemi is a pleasant village with plenty of restaurants to eat in (mostly only serving fish). Marzamemi, in the area of Casa del Pescatore, is generally quite quiet with the exception of Friday and Saturday night when it is busy and can be quite noisy. Marzamemi proved an excellent base to explore the region and we particularly enjoyed visits to Noto, Syracuse and the local nature reserve Vendicari.'

'Prachtige ligging en uitstekend terras. We hadden een huurauto waarmee we de nabijgelegen dorpen en stadjes in het binnenland bezochten. Het was prachtig. Tevens was het echt genieten van de veelkleurige bermen langs kleine en grote wegen die volledig in bloei stonden. Ook het onthaal en de inrichting van het vissershuis waren prima.'

The area / going around: San Lorenzo, which lies 2 kilometres to the north of Marzamemi, marks the beginning of one of the most beautiful stretches of the Sicilian coast. Here the shore is characterised by golden sand beaches, turquoise seas and white limestone rocks. San Lorenzo borders on the natural reserve of ‘Vendicari’. Here you’ll find a breathtaking variety of Mediterranean flora and fauna, exotic beaches and Byzantine ruins. It is also a veritable oasis of rest and tranquillity for an array of bird species.
Heading south towards the south-eastern tip of Sicily, you find a fishing village called Portopalo. Taking the road from Marzamemi to Portopalo, but turning off before an impressive castle on the sea, one can turn left and visit the old ‘Tonnara’, one of the most scenic and extraordinary sights to be seen in Sicily. Noto, a magnificent little city famous for its stunning Baroque architecture, lies 10 kilometres away. You can’t miss the traditional afternoon stroll down its main street.

I have been here twice. Marzamemi offers great fish restaurants and a charming, very Mediterranean atmosphere. On Saturday the music is loud until around 2 o'clock. The cottage itself is in the center of the village on the promenade, only 3 meters from the shores. You can here the waves in the bedroom. Can't wait to be back here.Did you find this review helpful? We had a beautiful holiday staying at Casa del Pescatore - Spada. We spent a very idle week visiting the surrounding area, but mostly sitting out on the terrace watching the world go by and listening to the sea! The only potential negative was when we arived and the village was more like San Antonio in Ibiza than tiny village in Sicily, but liuckily (in May). it was only party night on the Saturday night and it was actually quite amusing once we'd got over the shock. The rest of the week was really quiet, the cottage is quite basic, but we prefer it like that, very comfortable and with everything you need. The keyholder (Paolo) was really helpful with instructions on how everything worked and where to buy food etcDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We were very disappointed with the accommodations at the Fisherman's Cottage/Casa Pescatore The bedroom smells musty and moldy and is so humid that the sheets felt wet when we got into bed each night. The pillows are hard (probably because of the humidity) and the mattresses are lumpy. The bedroom overall is very uncomfortable and we considered leaving the rental and simply going to a hotel as it was really affecting our sleep. The photos showed a shaded porch. We did not have a shade placed until the 5th day of our stay and therefore were forced inside or to go to restaurants during the hot part of the day. We woke up every morning with trash (cups, cigarette boxes, etc) on the front porch and on the back stoop and had people actually looking through the windows and walking on the porch throughout the day. There is absolutely no privacy. Also, there were ants all on the kitchen counters when we arrived and several of the dishes were dirty. There were no cleaning supplies to help us get things in order. Finally, even though the house is advertised as self-catering, it does not have some of the most basic items that one needs to prepare even simple meals: No Dishwashing soap and only a Dirty, used Kitchen sponge to clean dishes No knife sharp enough to cut bread or an apple The coffee maker handle heat ups and cannot be lifted off the stove because there is no pot holder Only 1 kitchen towel provided for a week rental Only 1 small spoon in the whole house No way to toast bread (no oven, no grill, no toaster) Overall, we would not recommend this rental unless of course all you care about is the view, which is gorgeous.Did you find this review helpful? We visited this house in June 2009 - the weather was hot and sunny, and the house was located right on the seafront. At the end of the terrace you could step right down on to the rocks that began to shape the harbour wall. We found Marzamemi to be a strange but nice place. Whilst there are plenty of bars and restaurants, there was no supermarket or bakery (or at least we didn't find one!) so we made sure that we did this on plenty of days out. Being our first time in Italy, we had no idea about the Italian system of private beaches / lidos. In the UK, beaches are almost always open to the public and therefore it seemed a little strange that in some places we needed to pay to sit on the sand. Nevertheless, we found a great free beach at Lido de Noto - very clean and easily accessible. The only thing about the property we found to be a little frustrating was that other tourists seemed to think it was find to walk along our terrace. In fact, on two occasions, people walked into the house, thinking it was a quiet restaurant!!! But hey, there are worse things that could have happened. We flew to Palermo from London Stansted. Beware - Marzamemi is a long way from Palermo (around 4 hours) but I think Catania airport would have been a better option. All in all a good holiday - we'll probably return to Sicily as we'd like to explore other parts! ChrisRecommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+.

It was a special experience for us to stay for one week in this fisherman's cottage in the lovely village Marzamemi. On saturday night the centre was full of beautifull young people enjoying a drink. But during the week the nights were quiet and romantic. There are some great restaurants and small cozy bars. During the day the nature reserve is nearby with a stunning beach and azur blue water. From Marzamemi we made day trips to Noto, Modica and Ragusa. All very beautifull cities, that must be seen. In travel guides you can not find a lot about Marzamemi. It is certainly a hidden treasure, so better see it, before it becomes a tourist place. We really had the feeling that we became (for one week) a part of local Sicilian life. The interior of the cottage is very simple, but has all you need. Because most of the time you will be outside sightseeing, swimming, eating or just relaxing at the terrace with a splendid view of the sea.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway.

Marzamemi, is a lovely scilian village with several excellant resturants. Some basic italian language skills recommended althought the locals are very friendly and helpful. The cottage is lovely and well mainitained and the outlook onto the sea is to die for. We spent alot of our time just sitting and watching the boats from the local fishing port sail in and out and generally watched the world go by. Directly in front of the cottage is the sea and when sat quitely you can see an array of colourful fish. A short drive thorough the village there is a quiet beach area and the nearby nature reserve is a must. Several local supermarkets are near by but are closed on a sunday. The owner provided excellent service, prompt reply to emails and detailed map from airport to village. The local agent was excellent and very helpful. Overall a lovely quiet restful holiday.Recommended for: Sightseeing, age 55+, romantic getaway.

Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1
