Great Cabin for Large Group
Great Cabin for Large Group
My family and I had a wonderful time in November 2013 at Hummingbird Crossing to celebrate my 50th birthday. The cabin’s five bedrooms and numerous pull-out futons more than accommodated everyone. We had folks who stayed every night, some who just stayed a couple of nights, and some who visited as day-trippers. Whatever the case, everyone loved the cabin. There’s no denying that this cabin is older (relative to some of the newer rental cabins in the area) and probably could use some refreshing here and there. But I’m happy to report that none of that detracted from anyone’s enjoyment of our vacation. I heard no complaints. There are a few things to be aware of — I wouldn’t call these “negatives”, but just things to be aware of — the kitchen is a little tight on space, especially when you have 3 or 4 people in there cooking. However, we all managed to cook a lot and certainly we all ate plenty, so the space was not a hindrance in that regard! Also, the stairs down to the basement level (where there is a large TV area, two bedrooms, and the hot tub) are a bit steep. You probably want to make sure you don’t put anyone with unsure footing down there (very elderly or toddlers). Or just tell them to use the handrail, and they should be fine. Some standouts worth mentioning: the wood-burning fireplace provided a cozy feel and nice ambiance (and warmth). The hot tub is large and many folks in my group enjoyed it. If you’re not into wooded hiking, the gravel roads around the cabin provide a good place to get some walking exercise. Plenty of hills to challenge you and not very much vehicle traffic. The sunset view off the back deck was often spectacular. With such a large cabin (holding a lot of people), you need plenty of parking…which there is. If you have a large group that wants a great mountain getaway and if staying in an older cabin is fine with you, I can certainly recommend Hummingbird Crossing. The cabin owner was friendly and quick to respond to e-mails and provided all the info I needed. Bill D. Georgia

Owner response: Hi Bill, Glad you had a great 50th birthday celebration. We really appreciate your kind comments about our family cabin. It really is a great place to host large groups. We are doing a major update to furnishings tomorrow. (Please check out our website for new pictures). Hope you will come back for a visit in the future. Thanks again!

Awesome Cabin! Perfect getaway for a long weekend, tuck inside the N. GA Mtns
A group of 12 of us rented this cabin for a 3-day weekend in Jan-13. It was perfect for the size of our group; large bedrooms and spacious areas to hang out upstairs and downstairs. The guys hung out primarily downstairs by the larger TV, hot tub, and BIG screened in porch. Ladies enjoyed the cozy upstairs with the fireplace. Everything was included that we needed plus more. It's an ideal get-a-way for those needed a little R&R. The oweners were easy to communicate with and very helpful. Highlighy recommended and we hope to rent it again in the future.

The drive up the road to the cabin can be treacherous due to loose gravel, which made my first inclination to ask for a refund seem reasonable. Driving up, the gravel was so loose on the right side of the road that we lost traction and nearly slid into a ravine. Further into the week, we discovered that maybe following that first inclination may have saved us money and a ton of headaches. The morning after our arrival, my daughter slipped on wet grass and broke her ankle and leg in three places, which landed her in Fannin Hospital requiring surgery that put her in a non weight bearing boot for the next 8 weeks. However, we were determined to try and enjoy the remainder of our family vacation. Instead we found ourselves cleaning and clearing out spiders and spider webs, to try and make sure our two toddler grandbabies did not eat something that they shouldn't, or have something crawl on them in the middle of the night. I don't know who they used as a cleaning company, but they had definitely not cleaned under the beds or couch nor clean the basement part of the cabin. The door frame on the main level bedroom is split and it was almost impossible to close the door. If you used the upstairs bathroom and closed the door, you would possibly find yourself locked in and really having to work to open the door. There is a split in the floor on the main level that seems to be made from a shift in the foundation. The plastic chairs on the back deck leave alot to be desired, as most were faded and cracked from exposure to the weather. The gas grill was disgusting and we had to scrub burnt and baked on food off of it from who knows how long ago. Since coming home, I have emailed the owner and let her know my grievances and the shape of the cabin. She offered to refund the cleaning fee, but as of date and several more emails I have not received any money or response. Blue Ridge has alot of things that I would recommend, such as the train, the waterfalls, and downtown....but this cabin is not one that I can recommend. I am sorry, because until this year I loved Blue Ridge.

Owner response: Wow, it seems your experience at our family cabin was an anomaly, (see other reviews)! After offering your group a special rate and working with your financial issues so your family could enjoy a vacation, your critique is uncalled for and incredibly unfair. We will be the first to admit that our mountain cabin is not a 5-star hotel, and was never presented as such. We have opened our large 5- bedroom family cabin for large groups to get together and enjoy the north Georgia mountain experience. Yes, indeed we are in the mountains on a gravel mountain road. Driving on gravel may seem like a daunting experience to navigate on your first trip up the mountain, but totally capable of being driven by all types of vehicles. Our cabin is not a potential candidate for an arachnophobia movie as you imply. The cabin is treated for spiders, but being located in the woods and mountains, having flying and crawling insects are a occasional occurrence. Never in the 8 years of ownership, has anyone been "attacked" at night! We use a professional cleaning service, who we feel, does a thorough job cleaning, but sometimes "dust bunnies" do escape their cleaning efforts. (You brought dogs and we all know about dog hair!) However, we have addressed your concerns to our service. I'm sure you had very clean bathrooms, linens, and a well-stocked and clean kitchen. Gas grills require a "burn-off" before use! Thought everyone knew that! The cabin was built in 1982 and normal settling has caused very minor issues with 2 door closures...think most homeowners know this....and is not a safety issue as you seem to imply. We are terribly sorry that your daughter slipped on the wet grass and broke her ankle, and hope she has a speedy recovery. We do hope that you will come back to Blue Ridge. It really is an amazing place to vacation!
A group of 11 of us stayed in this cabin for the weekend of March 30-April 1, 2012 to celebrate my 30th birthday. We all had a blast! It is so peaceful, and the weather we had all weekend was gorgeous. Everyone enjoyed the screened-in porch for playing board games and soaking in the hot tub. I even had some time to relax in the living room and read a book - a wonderful change of pace from my busy schedule. One of the reasons I picked this cabin was because there are 5 bedrooms with (I believe) all queen beds - no bunk beds. This was ideal for us since our group had all adults and no kids. On Saturday we left the cabin for a bit to get some lunch at the Pink Pig bbq joint in Cherry Log. Pretty good food, and very friendly service. Popped into the center of town in Blue Ridge for a bit. There are lots of little shops there, and if you like going antiquing, then you'll enjoy the area. I requested a late check-out on Sunday, and while half the group left at 12:30, the rest of us stayed until almost 2, just relaxing on the front porch and taking in the sunshine and fresh air. The owner was great to deal with and helpful in answering my questions. Overall, we had a great mini-vacation in the mountains, and I highly recommend this cabin!

Owner response: Kate, Thanks so much for the kind words. Would love to have you and your group come back sometime. The North Georgia mountains are a great place to relax and enjoy friendships. Diane
We have stayed in this cabin two years in a row and are booking our third. I am delighted to find a cabin that will accommodate a church group for a weekend instead of requiring a full week's rental. The owners are fabulous to interact with, and the bed arrangements works with our Sunday School Class' needs - I have always been able to put the boys on one floor and the girls on another. The cabin is clean, the kitchen is adequately stocked (a serious plus!), and the flow works well for group time. We typically raft the Ocoee River in Benton, TN and this cabin is well worth the one hour drive.

Owner response: Mary, Thanks for the kind words. We look forward to having you come back in June. Thanks Diane
Thank you so much for allowing us the opportunity to stay at your beautiful cabin. We took our employees up for a retreat and also attended the Apple Classic Car Show. We had a fantastic time staying in Blue Ridge and enjoying some quality time together in the cabin! There was plenty of room for everyone! The cabin was VERY clean and VERY well appointed with everything we could have needed. The views were amazing as well. We very much enjoyed the open floor plan in the kitchen where we were able to gather everyone for meals. The hot tub was very relaxing and clean as well! We would HIGHLY recommend this cabin to anyone looking to get a way with a large group. It served us perfectly and we were honored to have the opportunity to stay and enjoy it! The owner is extremely friendly and helpful and this cabin is truly wonderful. Thank you again! Brandon and Amanda

Our family used this cabin for guest at a "mountain wedding". It was wonderful to be able to put so many people together in one spot-it became the "party cabin" during the mountain weekend. Accommodations were great and it was a lovely place to stay. Well located between Blue Ridge and Ellijay with great views of sunsets and mountain ridges. Gerald and Judy Aselton

Why the Owner Chose Blue Ridge:
We love the mountains. We enjoy having our entire extended family of 16+ up for a weekend of BBQ, card games and cornhole or having a small group of friends up for fun and shopping in Blue Ridge or a couple's weekend away with a nice fire in the fireplace and a relaxing evening in the hot tub.
The Unique Benefits at this Cabin:
Renter's have told us that they can't decide between sitting on the front porch on the swing, sitting on the back deck in the rocking chairs watching the sunrise and sunet or sitting in the hot tub while looking at the mountain view.
