We enjoyed our stay at Casa Dakini in Punta Uva. Positives: location allowed us to experience howler monkeys and and other wildlife each day. We previously stayed on the beach north of Puerto Viejo and didn't have as many wildlife opportunities as this location. Deck was great for relaxing and viewing birds, monkey's and beautiful vegetation around house. House was clean and had good ventilation. Owner was very helpful and provided a lot of info before we arrived. Beautiful beaches were only a 5-10 minute walk away. Negatives: Oven did not work. Road that leads to house required 4 wheel drive vehicle which we did have. It's gravel and stone and had large potholes (not the owners fault, but still a consideration) Owner did make us aware of this. Caretakers were nice enough, but could have been more helpful in letting us know what was in the area. Seemed rushed when checking us in and out. We would have appreciated an updated list of restaurants in area and approximate hours of operation.
Owner response:Thanks Terri - sorry you had trouble with the oven, it is working but sometimes the electric starters get pushed out of position and you need to use matches to light the burners - instructions for all the house equipment is in the Guest Guide at the house. And we'll work on updating the restaurant list again...there are so many new places opening, others closing and changing owners/names etc that we decided we'd just let the Lonely Planet Guide do the legwork and have visitors discover them on their own! As for the road...indeed the condition does vary from good to bad depending on the weather and how recently the road-workers have smoothed it out, but we always recommend 4WD anyway, not just for our access but for the area as a whole since you never know when you'll need those extra few inches of clearance and grip!

Hi Geoff - We loved the house and loved the view of birds and flowers and monkeys! Caretakers Kari and Pascal were great. They were both so helpful in every way, and we loved the maid Rosa. She was a great cleaner and we loved her doing some laundry Great holiday and we will recommend your home. Best Diane and Geoff

Hi Geoff - Punta Uva is one of those memories that creep into my mind unbidden, and one of the few places I feel I would like to go back to someday. It is a great environment for thinking, writing and just being. The house was perfect for me, the gardens were immaculate and I can understand why you enjoy it there so much.I genuinely feel that Punta Uva was a highlight. I loved it there, just the lazy vibe and waking up to the sounds of the jungle, taking daybreak walks up the lane and seeing so much wildlife close by. I cycled to Manzanillo and hiked part of the coastal trail and ate lots of chocolate icecream from the local farm – the best in the whole world and very disappointing that they ran out by the end of the week. The house was perfect and beautifully integrated into the landscape. It was lovely to sit on the deck into the evening, with a surprising lack of bugs! Best wishes!

Magical house in a magical place. never got used to the view from the porch. traveled with my husband and 7 year old son and elderly father. My dad is an artist and was in heaven painting right from the porch. Punta Uva beach is the best I've seen and wonderful for children - nice waves to ride in on a boogie board. The house itself was just amazing - stayed cool, comfortable. So much wildlife and flora surrounds, astounding. LOVED Kari and Pascal - so helpful and caring. House was cleaned every few days - spotless. what luxury! We usually don't go back to places we've been, but this time, we may have to break that rule.
Owner response:Thanks so much Laura - this is what makes it all worth it!

Hello Geoff!! Casa Dakini is everything you described and probably a bit more. We really enjoyed the home itself and all of the creature comforts it offered. Kari and Pascal are real gems and did a great job of welcoming us and handing us a cold coconut while explaining the house, giving us a local map, sharing some basic tips on being a tourist in Costa Rica, chatting with Lucy about our bike rental, giving us a cacao to feast on, and being available for anything we needed. For Rocky and I the driveway and basic geography of the area was fabulous. We spent our two weeks pedalling up and down the roads in the mornings and body surfing in the afternoons. Our weather was really amazing given the transition month. As for local attractions....we loved the rescue sanctuary! And our best meal was at Pita Bonita with Selvin's coming in a close second. All in all we had a RELAXING vacation and would recommend this part of Costa Rica as a place to experience. Thanks for the opportunity! Best regards, Cynth

Your house is just lovely. We had a great time staying there and were able to accomplish many things relative to our land in Cahuita while we were there, namely paying the taxes! The architecture of your house is fantastic. It is obvious to us that much thought and consideration went into designing and building your home so that it complements the land and maximizes the fantastic rain forest and ocean view. Your architect, Edgar Brennis, designed and built our home in Rosario de Naranjo and quite honestly builds the most spectacular homes in all of Costa Rica. Cheers to Edgar for building another Costa Rican masterpiece! It was simply delightful hearing the howler monkeys each day but it was not an interference or intrusion..... They seemed to know when we wanted quiet time and somehow abided! What an amazing home you have. We especially like the open kitchen and the hammock on the deck... it is so peaceful and relaxing to hang out there... Reading, napping or having cocktails and chatting, Everything was in terrific working order when we were at Casa Dakini and everything looked just great. Kari and Pascal (caretakers) are great. Kari was very helpful to us and did a wonderful job. She had stocked the refrigerator for us with all of the things we had asked for. Your well appointed kitchen is terrific. Kari mentioned that she is a trained chef and in the future we will ask her if she would be interested in possibly being hired to cook a dinner or two for us. We look so forward to returning to your lovely Casa Dakini for another visit. It is simply fantastic! Thank you again for sharing your lovely piece of paradise with us!

Hi Geoff - We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Dakini. Ana was awesome and we liked having her there to chit chat with and get a more local perspective of things. The house was awesome and we loved sitting on the deck and looking out at the view. The gardener showed us the sloth and her baby hiding in the trees and some of the other animals. We appreciated the gate and the slight removal from town as it made us feel safe. We would gladly stay there again on our trip back to Costa Rica! Thankyou very much for letting us use your house.

Falling asleep to the cacophony of sounds of the rain forest, awaking to the sound of howler monkeys, and spending afternoons in the hammock lounging to the sounds of the waves crashing on the shore below. Fantastic views, wonderful gardens, and wildlife abound! Very comfortable and tremendous location. My wife and I would go back and stay here again in a heartbeat. Thanks, Geoff! Thanks, Ana!

It was amazing, fantastic and beautiful. A million thanks for allowing us the opportunity to stay at Casa Dakini. The beaches were beautiful, the house clean, comfortable and perfect!! We had to laugh every time we drove our rickity (200,000 miles on the odometer) geo tracker rental in liue of using horrible curse words. We will never complain about american roads again!! Seriously though it was such a relaxing trip. We got to watch and listen to a group of Howler monkeys quite closely just off the deck. We saw a green and black poison dart frog by the house while rinsing off sandals, bugs bugs and more fabulous bugs, but casa dakini is great about keeping them outside where they belong! Thanks again and again, we would like to go again in a year or two and take our kids.

Hi Geoff, Just wanted to let you know that we had a wonderful stay at the house this past week. It was the perfect house, perfect location, and Ana was very sweet. We really liked the area and we didn't do much -- enjoyed breakfasts on the deck, rented bikes for 4 days from Lucy the neighbor down the hill and rode to the different beaches. Surfed and sunned. Went to Cahuita one day, and that was the farthest. Thanks again for letting us stay in your lovely home. Even with 4 adults, we didn't feel crowded at all!

Hi Geoff, We were very happy with our visit and with your beautiful place. Everything was great - we loved the house and loved the beautiful beaches and forests. We went to Cahuita and had the whole beach just south of the point to ourselves - watched schools of huge sea bass feeding on schools of hatchlings right in the surf a few feet from the beach. We saw plenty of other wildlife everywhere - monkeys, toucans, parrots, frogs, sea birds, etc. We had plenty of good food and lots of cold beer. Selvin's was great. Thanks for letting us have it!

Thanks Geoff - Everything went really well and the house was terrific. The extra small mattress worked well for our toddler Phoebe and we all really loved watching the howler monkey’s from the deck. The boys liked the beach in Punta Uva near Selvin’s restaurant and Katie and I particularly liked the beach at the Arrecife bar where we could have Pina coladas on the beach. Ana was very helpful, the weather was great even in the July "green season" period – really hot for the first few days and then pleasant and sunny for much of the rest of our time. Thanks again and we might very well try to rent it again sometime in the future.

We had the chance to visit this wonderful place early July and there's really nothing but great things to say about it. The house is beautiful, very well maintained, and equipped with everything you need to feel right at home. Nestled on a hill and surrounded by nature, its only a few steps away from a beautiful secluded beach that we were able to enjoy (as well as other beaches close by). Ana, the property manager was quite helpful and always willing to provide us with great recommendations of things to do and places to eat. Definitely a place to stay if you're thinking of coming down to Punta Uva. Esteban and Lourdes

We have been coming to the Southern Caribbean coast for several years now, and have stayed in Puerto Viejo and in various rental houses along the road to Manzanillo. Without a doubt, Geoff's little piece of paradise was the nicest place we've stayed. My young children loved the house and deck and the easy access to Costa Rica's most spectacular beach (Punta Uva). My wife and I enjoyed cups of coffee and glasses of wine on the deck w/view most of all. Geoff was extraordinarily helpful, as was Anna the housekeeper. We're saving up for next year...Pura Vida.

We really enjoyed living in Casa Dakini's lovely space with such practical amenities (great cooking equipment, two splendid bathrooms and that outdoor shower that we shared with the howlers above in the trees on occasion, washing machine and drier, a comfortable bed) and with a magnificent garden that every morning drew two or sometimes three pairs of toucans, a flock of noisy parrots, and hundreds of brightly colored other birds. The house is managed with great care and cleaned thoroughly every week. And the gardener not only looks after the plants, he will also teach about the chocolate beans and which plants are good to eat and which ones produce a stinging sap. We enjoyed the crew that looked after the property very much and felt pampered by their courteous attention. We often sat on the deck and looked over the flowers to the Caribbean Ocean below and felt very fortunate to be living in Casa Dakini for our vacation. Many thanks for providing a lovely environment for us! PS We highly recommend the tours of La Ceiba Reserve just up the Pariaso Road behind Casa Dakini.

Geoff, Once again, thanks so much for letting us stay in your amazing house. Punta Uva is quite the most beautiful place I have ever been. The grounds of your property were astounding and one of the things I enjoyed most was walking up the driveway at night and turning off the flashlight for a moment and actually seeing complete darkness! ...we heard so many amazing sounds at night and saw beautiful birds and butterflies, flowers of all colors, and I even hand-picked ripe bananas for breakfast! The house is breath-taking and hands-down the nicest I have ever stayed in. Every detail added to our enjoyment. We appreciated all the amenities in the kitchen. We spent many hours on the deck laying in the hammock or trying to snap a photo of a humming bird. Ana was very helpful in many respects (where to get groceries, catching a bus, etc.) and she guided us to a wildlife rehabilitation center in Cocles. Our visit there was the highlight of our trip as our little girl had the opportunity to hold sloths and monkeys. We also felt secure having her (and her dogs) there on the property.

Hi GeoffWe had a really lovely time at Casa Dakini - we really wished we could have stayed longer! It exceeded our expectations – we didn’t expect to be able to see and hear the ocean so well from the house, and we didn’t expect it to be so close to the beaches.Hearing the ocean and feeling like we were very close to nature – the house is so open and airy, it’s wonderful. The house seemed lovingly cared for, rather than feeling like just a rental property. We also really appreciated that the owners obviously cared about the environment and their surroundings. We’d highly recommend Punta Uva. It’s pretty central to many of the great beaches in that part of the Caribbean – you can easily get to Cahuita and Manzanillo without having to slum it in Puerto Viejo. The rainforest and parks in the Punta Uva area are wonderful – much more beautiful than anything around Manuel Antonio.

Dear Geoff - Just wanted to let you know what a wonderful stay we had at your house in Punta Uva. It was more than we ever expected, and we would love to come back some time maybe later this year. As an architect, my husband was really impressed with the house, and the pains it must have taken to construct it. It truly is paradise there!

It was fabulous! Your house was awesome! I did wonder what in the hell the noise was the first morning - but now I know how the howler monkeys got their name! I appreciate all the information you sent in advance. Thanks again!

We had a restful and inspiring time and very much appreciated your house and all your care. The atmosphere around the house is very beautiful and retreat-like. I could see that reflected in the animals that brightened our hearts with their visits.
