It is best known for its beautiful Malecon (waterfront walkway) which offers strolling, biking, blading, volleyball, jogging and benches to sit on to watch the famous sunsets over the Bay.
La Paz is also home to one of Mexico's most prestigious marine biology universities, many language schools and offers year-round concerts, museums, live theater and cinemas. We really enjoyed our stay in La Paz and Casa Maria was a wonderful home base from which to start and end our adventures. A neighbor who has lived in this neighborhood all his life, Rodolfo, told us that a nurse named Luisa lived here before. After she died the house went to her only son but remained empty for many years. Colorin, colorado. Este cuento se ha acabado.

The Barozzi-Varosy-Beddo households enjoyed our week at Casa Maria - 1030 Serdan. We concur w/all previous remarks and would add only - Pizza? definitely Toscano's SE of Cathdral Plaza. Burgers & Steaks? None better than the Buffalo BBQ - even in the U.S. Our visit was enhanced by the annual Carneval on the Malecon. For us, this was an unplanned, unanticipated addition to our travel plans. Nothing like serendipity to create memories we'll speak of for years to come. Abrazoz La Paz! Louie & Carol (los abuelos) Chris & Emilia (parientes de Clio & Nora)

Janice here! (Bert's old pal) 1. cute house 2. washer a huge plus! 3. Internet cafe across Serdan convenient! 4. Groceries soooooo close by 'Aramburo' 5. hammock perfect 6. Use "Azul" Tours for whales. Luis and wife Marilou are wonderful hosts and they add a few 'surprises' to their tour.

Had a great two weeks! Every day was an eating delight around La Paz and in Los Barriles. The "Best" baked potato at the "family-owned, outdoors, nightly, in-the-parkinglot place" Sorry I don't remember the name. If you get a chance to visit Pamela's and Doug's place there, do it. Enjoy your stay! Mike

MAJOR neighborhood parties going on every night. Turn on the ceiling fan to create white noise for sleeping. "I'm a man, I can change, if I have to, I guess." RedGreen. Love the minimalist component of Casa Maria. Great choice of paint colors. La Paz is San Diego 70 years ago . . mas o menos. Thanks to Pamela and our hosts, Ginnie and Mike, (Mancos, CO, USA). Balandra beach snorkeling is good right at the balancing rock (high tide). Check out EcoBaja Tour booth inside the Aguila bus station on the Malecon. Francisco goes out of his way to be helpful and Guillermo gives a fantastic city tour! For snorkeling tours, use Punta Baja Tours* - they're the BEST - Ginnie will write more on the subject. Muchas Gracias, Mexico! Hasta Luego! *Swimming with the sea lions - wow! A spiritual experience!

Love Casa Maria and I felt very safe in the area. I didn't have a car so have the following recommendations: Groceries at Aramburo on Hidalgo and Madero (2 blocks) - they have everything you need. Fresh fish at the Bravo Market - west on Serdan about seven blocks then left on Bravo. There is a tortilleria there, too. Late night taco plates at the Cafe de Callejon in the alley by the La Perla. Bus to the beaches (Tesoro, Pichilinque, La Balandra and Tecolote) is only $20 pesos each way, Catch at the bus terminal on the Malecon (be sure not to miss the last one back!) La Balandra is the most beautiful. Call PuntaBaja Tours for the BEST day trip to Isla Espiritu Santos - ask for Arturo. The card is in the other 'house' book. Rent a car for a couple of days and explore - about $70usd per day. Car rentals all along the Malecon. Spanish lessons at Se Habla . . La Paz on Madero. Ph 612-122-7763 Empanadas and tamales from the cute guy outside Aramburo. Towels are in the cupboard under the books! Buen provecho! y muchas gracias mi amiga, Pamela!

Postscripts . . .to previous comments. 1. There is a 1Precio store on Dominguez & Arreola (I think - in any case it's close by there) where you can buy some canned/packaged goods and lots of "stuff" you might have forgotten to bring. We bought a couple of kitchen knives, some food storage containers, juice, canned beans, etc. The 1 price is $11.50pesos ($1,15usd). 2. The washing machine hoses are connected opposite to what they seem to be so if you want hot wash/cold rinse, you have to set it to Frio/Frio. And vice versa, natch. 3. Most of the blinds (the ones that you pull down and push up) work great if they're not left down too long. If they are, they "forget" how to go back up and just sort of flop around. They can be coaxed tho, and if you have the patience, they'll "remember" after they've been up for a day or two. Patience is the key. 4. Internet. Rosita has computers at $10pesos per hour($1usd). They're VERY slow, however. 5th Ave. Coffee Shop has fast computers at $20pesos/hr.($2usd) There are only 2 machines but you can plug in a laptop there as well. The Callejon Coffee Shop has many, quite fast at $10pesos/hr ($1usd) and also has a plug-in option for your laptop.

We were in La Paz (for 1 day) in 1996 and thought it would be great to spend more time here. How right we were! Unlike Los Cabos, which has changed substantially (and for the worse) in that time, La Paz has managed to keep the things that enchanted us then: REALLY friendly residents, low-key commercial activity, interesting and relatively inexpensive eating places . . . well, you've found your own things, no doubt. Casa Maria was an ideal place for us to stay, especially since we had no car. We walked everywhere or took a taxi or local bus. Talk about cross-cultural experience! Some of the things we found out: 1. you can buy propane canisters for the wee-barbie at Deportes America on Esquierro just off 16th Sept. Each canister is about $95.00 or $9.50usd. 2. Benjamin Duarte (Baja Biking Explorers 612-139-0202) is very helpful and knowldgeable and runs a bike rental/bike touring operation here. He delivers to the door, gives all kinds of information, charges reasonable rates and speaks excellent English. We recommend him highly. 3. Jose Gaytan is also extremely helpful - he even loaned us some of his family's (English) videos; our Spanish being pretty nominal. 4. Ditto to previous comments re: Luci and Rosita. 5. For a modest cardiac workout, take the bus (from the Tourist Bus Station) to Tecolote. It's $20 pesos each way ($2usd) and Tecolote is an excellent place to spend a sunny afternoon. There is a tour from Tecolote to Espiritu Santos Island, about $450 pesos ($45usd) which includes lunch, snorkelling, swimming with sea lions, etc. We didn't go but heard it's good. It goes from 10am until about 4pm. 6. Aramburo is closer to Casa Maria but the Ley store on 5 de Mayo has a wider selection of fruits, vegetables, meat . . . well, pretty much everything. Hope you enjoy yourself as much as we did. Thanks, Pamela, for your hospitality and help. You're a peach! And we'll be back. Oh, and thanks for all the books. Cheers, Lorna & Dave

Casa Maria met and exceeded our expectations. Pamela is a very good host. We agree with the previous comments of the Meades and add the following observations. Ken & Lynne had previously visited La Paz and still think it is one of the best places in Mexico. We loved the food and relaxed atmosphere of the city. Max and Heidi (German Shepherds) liked the big back yard, walking the Malecon twice per day - especially at sunset, and running in the sand at Playa Tecolote. We highly recommend: 1. Sunday brunch at the restaurant on top of the Seven Crowns Hotel. At $13.00/person, it is one of the best buffets anywhere, and the view is great. 2. Fish tacos or marisco cocktails at Bismark-cito or Hermanos Gonzales (behind Burger King). 3. The special calamari appetizer (the calimari is sliced thin and marinated in lime and soy) at Bermejo in the Los Arcos Hotel. With the salad bar, it is enough for a meal. Atmosphere and view are great, too. 4. Margaritas at the Tecolote Restaurant on the playa. Go at 3:30 and watch the Baja ferry sail across the horizon in front of Isla Espiritu Santo. 5. Take cooking classes with Raymundo. Go to his booth at Marina de La Paz for info or to sign up. He also teaches Spanish. 6. Breakfast at Rosita's Antojitos across the street(from Casa Maria). Rosa is very sweet. 7. Use Luci to clean. She's good and inexpensive. Ask Pamela to arrange this for you. 8. Car wash El Milenio around the corner on Morelos is excellent if you have a dirty car. 9. Tequila's Bar - one of the few gringo hangouts - has excellent meals and is located in an interesting building. Try the salmon or halibut - fresh from Alaska. 10. Smile and say "Hola" to people. You won't find timeshare sales people or vendors on the Malecon. THIS IS NOT CABO!!!! We are thankful for the difference and hope it never changes.
