We have had a glorious week spent in this gite. So wonderfully welcoming and homely. We loved sitting by the fire every evening and enjoying the facilities. Everything was thought of, we found everything here we needed. And thank you for the basket of goodies, we shall definitely recommend to friends.Did you find this review helpful? Have had a wonderful holiday- thank you for the jam, biscuits, wine and coffee. Really love the house, every necessary comfort. Lovely setting close to the attractions yet peaceful. We visited 1. Fougeres - lovely setting, enjoyed castle visit 2. D-day museum at Arromanches - well worth the drive 3. Bayeux tapestry and fascinating Mont St Michel 4. Dinan - pretty village with a brilliant boat trip 5. Rennes - lively and historic Still lots more to see so will be back again.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We've had a fabulous family holiday here at Le Vieux Chalonge. I love, love, love the house and the way it's decorated. It felt like a home away from home. You've done a wonderful job creating such a brilliant holiday home. Thank you for the wine and fig jam - lovely treat to arrive to. Jan and Reg (caretakers) were very helpful and friendly. Thanks too for having Sky TV - it made entertaining a 2-year old much easier with Ceebeebies on hand at 'cranky hour'. All the facilities available make for a very comfortable stay. It's a great location from which to explore Brittany and Normandy. We didn't manage to see all we wanted to in 2 weeks so we will just have to come back next year. Oh well, c'est la vie!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

This beautiful house with lovely court and swimming pool in a very nice town where we share the festivities of the 15th July. Boys in the Orangerie, we in the master bedroom, girls in the 4 bed room and Oma and Opa in the bridal suite. And yes, lovely weather, nice trips, bbq, swimming activities etc. etc. We don't like to leave but well, great memories have been made.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

A delightful, peaceful gite literally on the Normandy / Brittany border. Once we found it (a few wrong turns because we didn't read the directions properly!) we discovered it was tucked away in a very quiet location overlooking open fields. Accommodation was clean, orderly, & everything we needed was supplied from plenty of cleaning products to table tennis bats and balls. Our 2 families (8 in total) had plenty of room, the 2 girls loved making their own little independent home in the Orangery so the 2 boys had the choice of bunk or single beds in the 3rd bedroom. There were a couple of bottles of good wine welcoming us and some delicious fig jam - never tried it before but we enjoyed it both on bread and with cheese, and even bought some more to take home. Plenty of books, cds and DVD's to use if you wanted, plus satelite TV, and lots of info on local attractions. Outside plenty of room to park both cars off road. Not that the road is busy - maybe one car passing by a day! Garden not huge but big enough to play boules (plastic ones, again supplied). And it even has its own well at the front! The Dads enjoyed very competitive games of table tennis when the breeze died down enough to play. Mums enjoyed sitting by the pool, although it wasn't quite warm enough to tempt them in more than once. Kids went in every day though! Only other issues were frequent visits indoors from wasps (maybe a beaded curtain on the back door would help?) and a few flies. Anyway, a minor concern. Kids enjoyed staying there so much we didn't venture out much although did go to Fougeres (interesting Chateau), Mont St Michel, and the L'Ange Michel Park which was great for the kids. The couple who came to clean out the pool were very friendly and helpful. Went out for a meal in St James but a bit disappointing, French standards of hygiene leave a lot to be desired sometimes. St James had a couple of decent supermarkets and bakeries although would recommend the bakery in St Georges for the daily bread / almond croissant run. Petrol also decent price at the bigger supermarket. Weather was OK, end of August so not blazing sun every day but better than the UK anyway! All in all a very relaxing holiday, we would definitely recommend a stay here. Well stocked, you don't need to bring much, very comfortable, nice to sit outside with a glass of wine and watch the sun go down. Only gripe is that I never did discover what a "chalonge" is (or was).Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We thoroughly enjoyed staying in this farmhouse and gite. It is decorated and kept beautifully. The beds are super comfy, and my sister was completely jealous of their main bathroom! The pool and gardens are a great place for families and couples alike, and the caretakers were so helpful. Having the TV with Sky was a great help as we had a toddler with us, but it’s also great to unwind in front of it and the log fire after a day’s touring. Location is ideal for driving the 1-2 hour trips around Normandy. Saint James has all you will need in the forms of shops/pharmacies/vet/etc. We had the dog with us and he also loved it :) We will defiantly come back here in the future.Did you find this review helpful? What a fabulous holiday home this is. The renovation of the main house and the gite have been so well done to retain the charm of the period yet still offer very comfortable living. The rural location is absolutely idyllic without the noise and bustle we've experienced in other places. It seems at night that our only company were the stars and the chirping crickets. We managed to take in some of the local sights, mainly in the mornings because I think we had the hottest week of the summer so far with temperatures peaking at around 33C (over 90 degrees F). It was so good to get back and spend the afternoons and evenings around the pool and garden. Despite the heat of the day we were still able to get a good night's sleep without discomfort from the high temperatures. We were a party of 6 and the house and gite were both so well equipped with everything you'd ever need with no shortage of space to accomodate us all comfortably. There was an extensive library of books, dvds and the Satellite television was excellent for some late evening entertainment if you needed it. The well equipped laundry room with washer and dryer was also very useful. Overall we couldn't fault the property and the location is superb for discovering this area of France and I would certainly consider returning in the future.Did you find this review helpful? When we started looking for a holiday, we wanted to find something away from noise polluted London in which we live; we thought the French countryside might be an option. And what we found was Le Vieux Chalonge. The tranquiIity offered by the rural location, which largely has a cow crew for neighbours, provides us the necessary relaxation away from our day-to-day rush of school, uni and work. The nearby facilities and places of interest, like the SuperU and the American WWII Memorial, echo what the holiday for us is mainly about - a simple attraction filled with an opportunity to relax and recuperate. What was originally meant as a one off visit has now lead to us booking our third holiday, and we hope it, like all the previous ones, will give is a chance to forget school, uni and work, and simply find tranquil days by the pool or enjoying our own table tennis marathons.Did you find this review helpful? We’ve now had our summer holidays at Le Vieux Challenge for the last 3 years and can’t recommend it enough. The location is wonderfully rural and quiet and yet its proximity to the lovely town of St James makes it handy to restock supplies. For days out Avranche, Fougeres, St Hillaire and St Malo are all an easy drive away, as is the great beach at Carolles. The property itself is clean, very well equipped and with both the main farmhouse and gite it provides very flexible sleeping arrangements. With a big lawn, boule court, pool and table tennis there’s plenty of things to entertain yourself with and the BBQ and big outside table provide plenty of opportunity to indulge yourself dining al fresco. When the weather’s not so good there’s always Sky TV and internet access to keep you going. We’ve visited with both toddlers and with Grandma in tow and Le Vieux Challenge has catered brilliantly for everyone. Well worth a stay.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3
