Long Caye hotel description
When Slickrock Adventures first moved out to Glover's Reef Atoll off the coast of Belize, our goal was to develop a facility that feels non-developed. Throughout the Caribbean there are very few facilities that are this rustic by design. On Long Caye, development means fifteen cabanas perched right on the water’s edge, a well-stocked kitchen and fantastic menu, solar-powered pumps and lighting, composting toilets, expert guides, three dozen sea kayaks, a bunch of sailboards, surf kayaks, surf boards, fishing kayaks, paddleboards, kiteboarding, a dive shop (the only thing not owned by Slickrock). There is no maid service, air conditioners or flush toilets. Your cell phone won’t work and there’s no internet access. But there is a fridge permanently loaded with Fantas and Belikin beer, private beaches, and great people. It all represents the soft side of adventure travel - right down to the excellent chefs who cook your meal and then sit down at the table with you to dine.
Sea Kayaking: The 80-degree waters of the Caribbean create an unbeatable setting to enjoy the thrills of sea kayaking. No experience is required for this or any of our other activities. Our guides provide instruction covering a full range of kayaking techniques, including paddling strokes, rolling, and rescues. We paddle every day to nearby islands, into the lagoon, or along the reef in search of new snorkeling locations. Skimming over the neon blue water, our boats dodge patch reefs and startle spotted eagle rays, barracuda, and bonefish. We often see porpoise and sea turtles while paddling through the channels into the open sea, where we stop to snorkel from the boats.
Snorkeling: Of all the highlights of your visit to Long Caye, exploring the underwater world will be the most memorable. The pristine reefs of Belize are world-renowned, and those at Glover’s National Marine Reserve are the best in the country. In addition to 700+ patch reefs accessible by kayak, there is outstanding snorkeling on the reef wall just off our shore. The abundance and variety of sea life is astounding, and you could spend a lifetime exploring the coral formations at Glover’s Reef Belize.
Fishing: Although Slickrock’s program emphasizes kayaking, snorkeling, diving, surfing, and windsurfing, fishermen will not be disappointed! There is no need to hire a private guide, you just wade in. The fishing (catch-and-release only) is excellent just off our island; in fact Belizean fishing guides regularly bring their guests over 20 miles by boat just to fish a few feet from our shore. It is common to pull in up to a half-dozen bonefish per session. Many fishermen also spin-cast off of our dock and permit, jack, and barracuda also provide a great deal of excitement. Fishermen can fish any time they like, if you get up early or fish late in the day you won't even miss any of the other activities.

- Featured on the cover of Outside magazine, our spacious island (13.5 acres) and rustic facilities ensure your comfort without compromising the adventure of living on an undeveloped and uncrowded island. You'll notice our windows on our beach huts don't have screens and we don't use mosquito netting. This is because we have a rare island in Belize where bugs really aren't a problem, and when they are present, we spray. And, best of all, a hammock with your name on it is waiting under the palms! Guests stay in two-person beach huts, perched above the surf. Each cabana has beds with custom-made air mattresses and a porch with hammocks and lounge chairs. Luggage benches and a small closet are provided and the cabins are lit with solar-powered lights. No air-conditioning is necessary since the ever-present breeze keeps the temperatures well below what they are on the mainland....moreless

A DREAM COME TRUE! TOTAL SECLUSION, TONS OF FUN!
If you are only comfotable at a five star hotel, please stay at one, this is not for you! But, if you love total seclusion, no cell phone, no internet, and tons of outdoor fun, then go to Glovers Reef w/Slickrock. The island is just so beautiful! The cabins, restrooms, and showers were very very clean, and much nicer then I expected. The diving is completely amazing! Dove with turtles, baracuda, nurse sharks, stingray, lion fish, parrot fish, scorpion fish, and many, many more. The cabin was right on the water, and I totally loved being lulled to sleep by the sound of the waves. Lucy and Gerrish are wonderful hosts. The staff is always helpful. If you want to be totally comfortable, and enjoy your trip, be properly prepared! READ everything that they send! They took the time to write it for a reason. And, diet before you go, because you will gain at least 5 pounds. All food is prepared from scratch, and is incredibly delicious. I would go back, just to eat the food!!! Why we chose Slickrock on Long CayeGuest comment entered by owner
Why we chose Slickrock on Long Caye
WHY DID WE CHOOSE GLOVERS REEF ATOLL WITH SLICKROCK? We were looking for a snorkel/kayak vacation and learned that the Barrier Reef in Belize was unmatched. We researched all of the available options and when we ran across Slickrock we were delighted because they offered not only snorkeling and kayaking, but windsurfing, kite sailing, surf kayaking, surfing, fishing, world class diving, SUP, and more! And all on a private island in the middle of the Caribbean! WHY WOULD WE GO BACK TO SLICKROCK? The experience exceeded our expectations on every level. The activities, the guides, the hosts, the cooks, the entire staff, and the experience were top notch. The snorkeling was the best we've ever experienced with octopus, eels, lobster, and the most abundant and beautiful fish we've ever seen. The trip was as personalized or group oriented as you chose. What we most enjoyed was that we could try anything we wanted, for as long as we wanted, get help if we wanted, refine it on our own if we wanted, be with the group if we wanted, have a personal activity if we wanted. The selection of activities and the pace were ours to choose. We would highly recommend this trip to all of our adventurous friends. The guides are excellent on and off the water. They are knowledgeable about the equipment, safety, instruction, marine life, history, geology, ecology, etc. The couldn't have done more to make sure we were well taken care of. The cooks prepared a wide variety of local favorites that were excellent and fresh. The cabanas are basic, with a beautiful setting on the water's edge. However, we spent almost no time at the cabana as we were always in/on the water. The trip was worth every penny and we'd do it again in a heart beat! Stayed April 2013, traveled as a couple

Gilligan's Island meets water sport Shangri La
Was there for a week and never wanted to leave. Honestly, the only way to describe it is the absolute perfect tropical getaway for those who cherish fascinating activity and connecting with nature. If you love glamour and over-the-top luxury, this isn't your place. If you love getting focused attention from skilled guides and being constantly amazed by stunning beauty, mysterious sea creatures, and thrilling water sports, while ensconced in a small bit of paradise, then this is your Shangri La.

Owner response: Thanks for mentioning our guides. We feel they are one of the things that truly sets us apart from our competition (that and the unique location, of course.) Often, at most resorts, if you want a private lesson on snorkeling, kayaking, windsurfing, etc. you make a special appointment and pay by the hour. Our island works altogether differently. Each week we take a boat out to the island to bring our guests and supplies. You get dropped off and the group that is already there, gets on the boat and goes home. Our max capacity is 34 guests, but most weeks are significantly smaller. Say there are 20 of you on the island during your stay. Our guides are all skilled instructors and are at your disposal each day to either actually lead a mini-adventure, or to give you personal instruction on a sport you have never done or need help with. One day you might learn how to self rescue in a sea kayak and the guide takes you and some others (who ever wants to go) on an afternoon kayaking out to a reef, then snorkeling for hours right from your kayak. Maybe the next day you want to windsurf instead. But you've never done it before. Our windsurfing instructor will take as much time as you need, working with you on the beach "simulator," then taking you out in the shallows to get you going. They'll even come rescue you if you get stuck downwind. That's how our all-inclusive package works. Everything is included (with a few exceptions: e.g. scuba, which is run by our neighbors, is extra). And our guides are very skilled, both in their particular sport and in teaching. Because of our unique location, and our focus on 10 different water sports, we are able to hire the best guides in the world.
Great vacation!! We highly recommend Slickrock for a true adventure, one of a kind, vacation! For kids of all ages...we took our 6 year old and she had the time of her life!

Owner response: Probably the thing that kids enjoy the most is simply the unusual environment. Even with the many different water sports at their beck and call each day (with top notch equipment and instructors included because all of our tours are all-inclusive vacations) kids often seem most attracted by the wonders of the tropical island environment. Iguanas, hermit crabs, the island bunny… an abundance of life in the tide pools. And parents love the fact that the island, being small (about 13 acres) is a natural “container” – no need to worry about anyone getting lost or concerns about strangers. Long Caye is about as carefree a location for a family vacation as could be imagined. And if that wasn't enough, we offer special rates for kids 11 and under and we also have special discount vacation packages for groups of 4 or more.

Year Purchased: 1977
About the owner: Cully Erdman created Slickrock in 1977, then a small kayak school on the Colorado River. In the early 1980s he expanded to Central America (Belize) after exploring the region while assisting with adventure television shows. In 1986, Lucy Wallingford joined on as a partner, and together they developed the four Belize itineraries that they offer today.
Why the Owner Chose Long Caye:
Simply put, there is no place like it on earth. We've wanted to go to another place like it, just to see what it's like to be a guest. We've looked and looked, and seriously, we have not been able to find anything to compare. When the property came up for sale, we were so lucky to be able to buy it.
The Unique Benefits at this Hotel:
Honestly, the only way to describe it is the absolute perfect tropical getaway for those who cherish fascinating activity and connecting with nature. If you love getting focused attention from skilled guides and being constantly amazed by stunning beauty, mysterious sea creatures, and thrilling water sports, while ensconced in a small bit of paradise, then this is your Shangri La.
