The spacious holiday house, family friendly, is in a private gated complex. The name of the complex is villa Lena with 4 equal size 3 storey semidetached houses. In Summer villa Lena is full of children and my husband, me and my relatives are very helpful if requested. The houses are inside a security gated walled garden that opens onto the main road. It is well protected and, according to our young guests, good fun to explore and play in. Our house 'THE SEA HORSE' is on 2 floors with independent entrance from the shared garden. The house can comfortably accommodate 6+ people, another bed can be added for extra price . You can park your car inside the complex. The house has air conditioning in the bedrooms on the second floor . There are also fans provided for those especially warm days. Heating for the cooler months. The famous sandy beach Vindicio, child safe, with beach clubs, is only 150 metres far.
A little history: There is historical evidence to show that Formia was inhabited as far back as 500 B.C. by an ancient Italic people known as the Volsci. These people fought the expansion of Rome, but eventually yielding, they became Roman citizens in 338 B.C. Under Roman citizenship Formia developed as a political center due mostly to its strategic location on the Via Appia. In the Republican Era and during the days of the Roman Empire, Formia became a noted seaside resort for the Roman aristocracy. After the ravaging by both Goths and Vandals, the town was finally destroyed by the Saracens in 846 A.D. The survivors of the destruction moved to the protected town of Gaeta and other neighboring villages. What remained of the area were two villages-Mola and Castellone. The name of Formia was then lost for 1,000 years until, in 1863, under the rulership of Victor Emmanuel II, during the unification of Italy movement, the two villages of Mola and Castellone were joined and the ancient name of Formia was re
A tour of Formia: In Formia, as well as in Gaeta, one can find many interesting and historical sights, and the 'finding' can be as much fun as looking at the site. For these excursions you need a good map of Formia ad surroundings that you will find in the house. Castellone: Further down the road Via Appia, but not as far as Standa. Follow the road up to the first piazza named 'Piazza Santo Erasmo'**. In this piazza is the Torre di Castellone, dating from the fourteenth century. (You may remember that Castellone was one of the villages left after the Saracens razed Formia.) Have a walk inside the old village and visit the ancient Roman Cistern dating I B.C.. There is also a church in this piazza, dating from the fourth century, called Santo Erasmo. Follow the signs out of the piazza towards Santa Maria della Noce (a church built in the tenth century) and wind your way up to the Castello Miramare. This is currently a restaurant and hotel, but it was, as its name implies, once a castle. There is a panoramic view of Formia from the road leading to the Castello. ** Our guests' favourite local “pizza” place is situated on the square of Castellone, the oldest part of Formia, 15 minute walk but less than 5 by the car from the house.
The rear double bedroom overlooks the rear driveway, quiet houses and mountains beyond. You have access out through the patio doors onto a lovely balcony where you can spend quiet evenings listening to music, playing cards, reading and just star gazing as the balcony is well shielded from any streetlights . This room has a fan.
The master bedroom is to the front of the house with air conditioning. Again a balcony on which you can sunbathe or just chill out on is easily accessed.. In the evenings to begin with you will perhaps find this terrace to be slightly noisier because of the nearby coastal road though you get used to it and given the other aspects of the location you will quickly realise how lucky you are to have rented this house.
The third bedroom is for the children with a bunk bed , also this room opens onto the rear balcony.

Year Purchased: 1975
About the owner: I live in Rome North, in the country side.
Why the Owner Chose Formia: In 1975 my father in low, Amedeo Esposito, built villa Lena for his 4 children and their families in order to spend Summer holidays all together. Time passed and the families have grown with other grandchildren and still now, in August, we meet all in this fantastic place. We spend our holidays in Formia from more than 40 years.
The Unique Benefits at this House: Sea Horse is our holiday home and we enjoy to spend our time with all the family at the very close Vindicio beach. You cross the road in front of the gate and down a little path you are there. What I like most is the wind rising up in the afternoon and jogging or walking along the seashore early in the morning when nobody is around.
