Villa Ala di Levante is one of the oldest mansions in Menaggio and was built in the 17th century. It was embellished and modernised and is a wonderful house where the family that still owns it passes part of the year. It has a very homely atmosphere and is beautifully furnished. The living, diningroom and kitchen are on the ground floor and have all french windows onto the gardens.
Although directly on the boulevard a high hedge and lots of mediterrean trees offer privacy and seclusion. On the upper floor are 5 double bedrooms which each a bathroom en-suiteand two single rooms You will adore opening up your window in the morning and enjoy the lovely view over lake and mountains. On the other side of the lake is Bellagio.
Lake Como is on the south side of the swiss alps and benefits of a sheltered position against the cold winds from northern europe. The summers are warm but with a lovely breeze in the afternoon, autum and springtime are adorable and winters are cold but with a blue sky. At midday you read your paper and have your capuccino on a terrace outside.
Who loves mountains: the mountains around lake Como are excellent for walking, hiking and biking, but also a relaxing drive in your car, will make you discover medieval villages where life stands stil.
The lake offers all kind of watersport: sailing, surfing. Important international and national races are held.
Lake como was already known to the romans ( roman churches) in the 12th century it was an important throughway for the northern peoples into Italy , and in the 18th century it was discovered by the rich Milanese families who built their summerhouses to get away from the humidity of the town. Some of them are open to the public ( Melzi, Carlotta, Balbaniello) and their gardens can be visited.
Food is good: fish from the lake, tasty wines from Valtellina, pasteries and special dishes such as polenta should be tried.
