Summer activities: In the summer there are lots of fun things to do in the area. West Yellowstone's entrance to the Park is the closest to the spectacular Old Faithful geyser, which erupts at regular intervals daily. You will also have a golden opportunity to view a great assortment of wildlife in their natural habitat. In addition to Yellowstone Park you'll want to visit Teton National Park just south of Yellowstone Park. The Lewis and Clark Caverns with their magnificent limestone caves and the historically preserved old west towns of Virginia and Nevada City are within easy driving range.
West Yellowstone is located in the heart of fly-fishing country. Several of the most fabled streams and rivers in the world are within a 5 to 50 mile radius of the town, including the Madison River, Gallatin River, Yellowstone River, and Henry's Fork of the Snake River. High quality lake fishing is also available on Yellowstone Lake, Hebgen Lake, Quake Lake, as well as Henry's Lake and Island Park Reservoir.
There are great hiking opportunities both inside and outside the park. Refer to the library of books and maps at the cabin for detailed information on hundreds of hikes and walks available in the area, in all ranges of difficulty.
River rafting on the Gallatin River is a great way to cool down on a hot summer day. You can opt for whitewater rafting or calmer stretches where you can better enjoy the scenery.
Several outfitters offer horseback riding excursions on an hourly or daily basis on their nearby private lands and into the park.
Fall activities: The fall, with its beautiful foliage, is a great time to visit Yellowstone Park. The energizing cooler temperatures make more strenuous activities such as hiking a lot more fun. There are fewer visitors in the park making the experience more intimate and peaceful. The late fall is also hunting season and West Yellowstone offers a great point of access for successful elk and deer hunting.
Winter activities: West Yellowstone and surroundings are famous for their excellent snow conditions, which makes it an ideal place for winter vacationing.
Snowmobiling can be enjoyed both inside and outside of the park. West Yellowstone is called the "snowmobiling capital of the world", and close-by Island Park offers additional access to nearly 1000 miles of groomed trails outside of Yellowstone Park. Our vacation home has direct access to many miles of groomed snowmobile trails, that take you all the way to Yellowstone Park or into Idaho. You can literally drive away from the cabin in your snowmobile and spend a full day on local trails. Another great way to view Yellowstone Park in winter is to make an excursion in a snow coach. It is more comfortable and relaxed but equally scenic!
Snowmobile rentals and tours are available from outfitters in West Yellowstone. There is also a snowmobile rental facility only a half mile from the cabin.
The west entrance road to Yellowstone Park and most park roads close to wheeled vehicles in early November each year. They reopen again from mid December through mid March to oversnow vehicles only - snowmobiles and snow coaches. Snowmobiling outside of Yellowstone Park usually gets underway around Thanksgiving.
If you love cross-country skiing, you can enjoy some of the nation's finest cross country ski trails here. Ski rentals are also available in West Yellowstone. Downhill skiing is available in Big Sky, Montana, 53 miles north. Guided dog sledding and snowshoeing adventures are also available.
