West Maui's Best Oceanfront Condominium - Cool & Tranquil
- Minimum stay:N/A
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Experience the best that Maui has to offer at our vacation rental on Maui's westside near the historic town of Lahaina. The comfortably elegant one-bedroom condominium is located in vibrant Honokowai - halfway between Ka'anapali and Kapalua - with a daily farmers market, shops, and restaurants just a short walk away. The Maui Sands is the essence of Old Hawai'i - lush tropical gardens, cool trade winds, and the murmuring ocean to lull you to sleep.
'Hale O Ke Kailanamalie' - our home near the gentle sea - is a cool corner unit with tranquil garden views, and just steps from the beach. Enjoy an early morning walk on the sand, swim in the large pool or at the gentle beach, take in the beautiful sunsets from the deck. You will not need a car - shops, restaurants, and markets are all within easy walking distance. The kitchen is fully equipped, and you can dine on the large lanai and smell the tropical flowers. Since the condominium does not face the west, you will not be baked by the tropical sun in the afternoon!
The condominium has just been remodeled and features new and vintage tropical furniture and art, plus a nice selection of Hawaiian music, DVDs, and books. You will not find a better place to experience Hawaii.

Just a short note to tell you how much we enjoyed staying at your condo this winter. We had a wonderful time---especially enjoyed the Hawaiian music. Also wanted to mention that your local agent Dave was most helpful when we needed him. We hope the weather during your stay is as good as it was for ours. Aloha!Did you find this review helpful? My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this delightful, tastefully decorated and furnished condo. It met our needs in everyway: from the beautiful, tranquil garden vista (enhanced by a generous lanai for lounging and dining) to the proximity to the ocean to the best take-out food ever (right across the street at Okazuya) it was all there. The living room/kitchen/dining room is completely charming, welcoming and comfortable. We felt immediately at home. Although the views and the tropical ambiance are enchanting, there is also the means for electronic audio and video diversion at your fingertips. The kitchen is simple, well layed out, and contains about anything you might have at home (even an espresso maker). Cooking is a tropical delight, and because of the orientation of the stove., you can watch the palm trees swaying as you cook. We were there for 9 days and never rented a car, everything is either within walking distance or short bus ride (the bus system on west Maui is great,$2 a ride, or $4 for a day pass) or an occasional cab for late evening junkets to any of the numerous clubs and restaurants. There is an espresso bar, Farmer's market, and natural food store right down the street. In addition to the wonderful Hawaiian air therapy (we had the door to the lanai open the whole time) there is great massage therapy right across the street (actually two different studios). We are already excited about our return trip to this perfect little piece of paradise.Recommended for: Adventure seekers, age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: So glad you were able to have a great vacation. Sounds like you "got it" -- the Maui Sands is simply the best place to stay in west Maui.

During our recent trip to Maui, we had the opportunity to stay at this condo. We didn’t know what to expect since we hadn’t stayed in that part of the island before. When we got to the unit, we were pleasantly surprised. The owners have decorated the unit in a way that is relaxed, nicely laid out, up to date and artful. The living area has a futon and chairs that face the TV and music unit. The kitchen is clean and neat, fully equipped, and provides all you need to prepare meals during the times you don’t want to dine out. Food is easily accessed in the nearby delis and markets, including the ‘farmers’ market’ nearby. We stopped and bought a beautiful arrangement of local flowers that we kept on the table during our stay. The unit has a nice dining table and an area to dine on the lanai. The single bedroom has a large comfortable bed with adequate closet space and storage. Sand chairs, mats and requisite beach items available. While the lanai doesn’t face the ocean, it is very comfortable, private, and faces out into a beautiful courtyard with palm trees and other interesting plants and shrubs. The unit is close to stores, good quality takeout places and you can easily walk out to the ocean front at the end of the courtyard where there is a deck with a beautiful view where you can sit and watch whales, occasional sea turtles and have a glass of wine while visiting with your condo neighbors. A great place to stay and we would certainly (and plan to) come again.Recommended for: Age 55+, tourists without a car, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.
Owner response: Many thanks for posting this lovely review. Sounds like you had a great time! Hope you'll make it an annual event. cheers, Mark

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: We live in Southern Oregon's beautiful Applegate Valley, where Annie designs hand knitting and crochet patterns under the name Oat Couture. Mark is a professional musician and freelance writer. We have been deeply involved in Hawaiian music and culture. Mark directed Hawaiian music and cultural camps on Molokai and Hawaii for many years, as well as writing books about Hawaiian slack key guitar and ukulele. We spend as much time in Hawaii as we can every year; there is something magical about the play of the light, the sound of the gentle waves and the sweet smell of tropical flowers on an evening breeze–nahenahe!
Why the Owner Chose Honokowai:
We fell in love with Maui Sands the first time we saw it; the beautiful landscaping, the low rise Island architecture and laid back style just felt like Old Hawaii. It is such a joy to be able to share this very special place with our friends and guests.
Kaanapali-Honokowaii has so much going for it: within just a short drive you can be in old town Lahaina or cruising the upscale shops at Kapalua. The beaches up north–Flemmings & Honolua– are among the best in the world. Then there's the ono grinds: The Okazuya, Mama's Ribs, fresh fish from the market right across the street! Life is just great in West Maui!
The Unique Benefits at this Condo:
We love our time there; walking up the street to buy fresh papayas from the Farmer's Market, grabbing a book and heading down to the beach; snorkeling at the nature preserve at Honolua Bay, walking down the boardwalk to Black Rock, watching the sunset, talking story and sharing pupu with people from all over the world.
The Maui Sands is so convenient: we can walk -- or drive -- a few blocks to the full-service shopping center, or just grab takeout from the popular Okazuya across the street. We always take the short drive to Lahaina to look at the old waterfront, people watch on Front Street or eat at one of the fine restaurants.
During the winter months, we watch whales right from the ocean front deck. In summer we enjoy the shade of the lush tropical gardens. It is always paradise at the Maui Sands.
