Hawaii Volcanoes National Park:
A major attraction in the area is the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Hawaii’s only World Heritage Site. It contains two of the most active volcanoes in the world, Mauna Loa and Kilauea, both of which tower over the Pacific. Volcanic eruptions have created a constantly changing landscape, and the lava flows reveal surprising geological formations. Rare birds and endemic species can be found there, as well as forests of giant ferns.

Liquid Assets:
There are many places to swim and snorkel in the area (in addition to your private warm pond in the back yard)! Beautiful Kapoho Bay is right around the corner. The famous Champagne Pond, a sea turtle hangout, is a leisurely 5 minute stroll. The awesome Wai Opae tidepools, Ahalanui warm pond State Park and Kehena black sand beach are all a short drive.

Snorkel in Your Backyard at Kapoho Beach. Free Wifi!

Year Purchased: 2001

Why the Owner Chose Kapoho

When I first came to Kapoho Beach in 1992 to do a music recording session it was love at first sight. The magical warm ponds, idyllic weather, great snorkeling, clean air and laid-back traffic-free setting combined to provide the perfect spot for someone who at the time was a software engineer in Silicon Valley. I was (am) fascinated with the spectacular Kilauea volcano and the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the summit of Mauna Kea and its observatories. I love stargazing at Kapoho, which is the best I have ever seen in the world. It is a place of many magical experiences. Lagoon House 2 features a private warm pond with fish that you can snorkel with, serene ocean and pond views, and a short stroll to renowned Champagne Pond (a sea turtle hangout) and fantastic ocean swimming in Kapoho Bay. Folks even snorkel in the Lagoon House 2 warm pond when it is raining. It is a home-away-from-home and has essentially anything you need including wifi and free long distance phone calls to the other Hawaiian islands and to mainland USA. This area is one of the most affordable in the whole State of Hawaii for both renting and purchasing. I like the Old Hawaii feeling of Kapoho and the Old West feeling of Pahoa town. Nearby Hilo is a great small city and features many cultural attractions such as the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, the Big Island Music Festival, the historic Palace Theater, University of Hawaii Performing Arts Center, ancient hula at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (Hawaii's only World Heritage site) and many other events. Check the Saturday edition of the local newspaper for events that are happening during your stay. Most of all, I love the Aloha of the Hawaiian people which is something very real, way beyond just being a concept for tourism.

Owner's Map of Kapoho

My dream to live in a tropical environment started when I visited the Caribbean in 1980 while working as a software engineer in Boston. I stayed at a wonderful oceanfront cottage and imagined owning such a property and renting it when I wasn't using it. About a decade later Sun Microsystems hired me and moved me from Boston back to my home town in Silicon Valley where I reunited with my professional musician friends. I was a part-time musician and gladly accepted an offer to go to Hawaii to do a recording session in 1992. Luckily, we stayed at an oceanfront vacation rental at Kapoho Beach and it was love at first sight. The following year we returned to Kapoho to do another recording session and this time I fulfilled my dream by buying The Cottage (VRBO listing #72090). It was a wonderful feeling knowing that Kapoho and my Cottage were there even when I was stuck in Bay Area traffic jams. I felt connected with Hawaii and it gave me a sense of peace. Because I was a software engineer I had early exposure to the internet and was a pioneer in booking Hawaiian vacation rentals on the internet. My dream then progressed to moving to Hawaii and that dream was fulfilled in 1996. I decided to change professions so obtained a Hawaii real estate license and began managing other rentals in addition to my own. This led to becoming a specialist in buying and selling vacation rentals and second homes. I also was lucky enough to attend Thanksgiving dinner at a local family's home soon after moving to Hawaii. They were musicians, we hit it off and I wound up playing with Bruddah Kuz for 5 years, recording a CD titled "Talkin' Da Kine" which got a tremendous amount of airplay in Hawaii and touring on the mainland and other Hawaiian islands. I realize that I am a lucky person that has had many dreams come true. A great benefit of my work is that I can also help other folk's dreams come true either for the vacation-of-a-lifetime or purchasing their own Piece of Paradise.

    • We had the plesure of staying here for a week in February 2008. A very tropical environment and had a great time relaxing on the island. The fish were very entertaining. A quick trip to Pahoa and snorkle just down the road. We had the pleasure of meeting the caretakers and they were very helpful with informati0on on the area sights. Be sure to go to the volcano at night. Steve your property is beautiful and well kept. Hope to be back in the near future. Thanks for a great home away from home. Joanne & Debi

    • Nothing beats July in paradise! Returning for our fourth consecutive year, my son and I enjoyed a relaxing 12 days at Lagoon 2. It is the perfect location for taking in the sights of the island on day trips, or, as we mostly did this year, chillaxing by the lagoon with fruity drinks (non-alcoholic for him, of course), listening to the tropical breeze find its way through the palms. There were fabulous meals whipped up in the full kitchen that comes with all the cooking paraphernalia you'd need with ingredients bought at the local farmers market--which, incidentally, blows away any other farmer's market I've ever been to. The screened lanai provided the ideal venue for nighttime fun and games, and I was very happy to discover the Scrabble board in the house's game collection. It is the perfect retreat, and I cannot recommend it highly enough!

This was our first trip to Lagoon 2 and we loved it! Swimming with the sea turtles in Champagne Pond was a definite highlight! The house worked great for us and the setting was quite beautiful and relaxing. The kids loved swimming in their "own" backyard and feeding the fish every day.We hope we get to come back to Lagoon 2 soon!

This is our 2nd trip to Lagoon 2. and again we enjoyed every minute. We went to see the lava. You walk for about 1/2 mile to a viewing point and you can see the lava! That was one of the best things we did. We look forward to returning again.

This house is truly a "Piece of Paradise". We loved swimming in the pond. We went to other swimming holes but always came back to our favorite spot! We got to see the lava flow at night, waterfalls, botanical gardens and rain forests. We came to celebrate our 10th anniversary. We loved everything!

It was a great vacation. wonderful swimming in the lagoon and resting on the chairs. The fish are great. We went to Champagne Pond and saw a sea turtle and a ton of other beautiful little fish. However, University Pond was definitely the best snorkeling although not good for little kids because there is a lot of coral and it is deep and there were a lot of waves. You MUST take scenic routes absolutely GORGEOUS and breath taking!

What an amazing & peaceful place. Loved feed the fish and swimming in the pond. So much to see in the area. Waves and crickets were gentle lullaby. Took more photos in 10 days than ever before. Had a blast on Sunday at Kehena Beach with drums, horns, ukuleles and more. We'll be back for longer next time. Thanks to KC, Tara and Steve.
