Turtle Sweet

My elderly mom and I stayed for two days at Kapoho Joe's Turtle Suite in the gated community, thinking we would have safe, easy access to Champagne Cove, where lava-heated waters harbor sea-turtles and swimming and snorkeling are famously easy. Unfortunately this suite is not near enough to walk to the Pond, and tho there is a shared golf cart (instructions?) there doesn't seem to be any public parking near the cove, or easy access in to it other than narrow lanes and ladders in between the private properties on the cove itself, which mom wasn't able to climb even if we dared park on private property, so we never actually swam in Champagne Pond. Of course this is no fault of Kapoho Joe's! Still, we dined in Pahoa --the Hawaiian Fusion restaurant was awesome! but to our taste the Italian was only passable -- and walked Lava Tree State Park, which is exquisitely beautiful, and the public hot pond nearby is truly a treat not to be missed! There is also the sea just a few yards down from the Joe's Turtle Suite, with three chairs set up to watch and listen to the surf or stargaze at the water's edge, at times shared with neighbors. The suite itself was fine, though I think the proprietress could use some help with cleaning; the inside felt clean, but I did get the feeling that she tries to keep the cleaning fee low by doing the job herself after work -- the small "lanai" area especially needs some TLC with things like plants, lights, repairs and such, and it was a little odd to be asked to clean up the trash and start the laundry at the end of our stay, but again, I think it keeps the cleaning fee low. As to the comfort of the facilities, my advice is not to try sleeping on the futon couch; but stick to the bed and you'll be quite comfy and get a nice night's rest! And, though the shower doors make a very loud screeching noise (I think everything in a humid climate has trouble opening and closing), the shower itself worked just fine, with plenty of hot water and water pressure. I'd like to add a special 'Thank You' to the hostess for being extra flexible with our rental dates; I mixed them up and at the last minute she was kind enough to switch them for us at no extra charge. Very "sweet" indeed! All we needed was provided at the little tiny house, and we had a lovely stay.

Great title

The listing description was mostly accurate. Unfortunately, direct t.v. was out while we were there. Also, the description was decieving when it mentioned bikes were available. We were unable to use the rusted bikes. Although the property was clean, there were so many bugs inside it was hard to relax. Maybe that is normal for being in such a tropical paradise. Great customer service! I would recommend the area to a friend. We loved the town of Pahoa, snorkeling in the warm ponds, and the ocean views were spectacular.

Owner response:Aloha and thank you for your review! Unfortunately, the satellite TV box was broken and was on order - that has now been received and is hooked up and working just fine! Because of the salty air, bicycles rust very quickly here, so we are no longer making them available. There is a bicycle rental shop in Hilo however. This is a tropical environment and yes, we do have bugs sometimes! The owner does have a pest control service maintaining the property. ' The Management

Memorable Christmas in Kapoho

Guest: Four Sixties (Dartmouth, MA USA)
Date of Stay: 12/22/11 Review Submitted: 02/13/12

This was the first time I had visited Hawaii for the Christmas holiday, and what a wonderful time we had. The location is excellent. Every morning I would enjoy my coffee on the lanai while watching the waves roll in. The house was clean, and provided all the supplies we needed. We did not have TV reception during our stay, but we were so busy, we didn't miss it. My grandchildren went swimming every day. either at the Champagne Pond the warm pond at Pohoiki or Kehena Beach. I definitely recommend Kaleo's Restaurant and Ning's in Pahoa.

Owner response:Thank you for visiting us! Please come again! A new Dish satellite box is now provided and is hooked up! - The Management

Amazing place

We've spent 12 amazing days at the Hexagon house. It was our first time on the Big Island. First of all I am very happy we decided for the East Coast instead of the West one. Not so touristic, here you can go away from it all for real. If you decide to go there make sure you read Hawaii The Big Island Revealed: The Ultimate Guidebook, it's on the shelf next to the door. It is one of the best guides ever. Rent a 4WD and drive around the island, there's plenty to see and do! The house looks than in the pics on this site! We'd love to go back again!! Mahalo to Joanie!

Great place to stay! ...

Date of Stay: 03/08/10 Review Submitted: 03/27/10

This place is known as the hexagon house and has quite a history. It is older but it's lots of fun and has everything you need for a great stay. You can't ask for a nicer area. It's a gated community with friendly neighbors. You are within a mile of two incredible snorkeling sites, the tide pools and the Champagne Pond: Volcanically-heated water, sea turtles, crystal clear water, beautiful fish, colorful coral - WOW!. A few more miles west down the coast is the public hot pond, a very large volcanically-heated swimming area. Then keep on going west along the coast and you see beautiful rain forests with tree-covered roads, black sand beaches, ending at a recent lava flow from Kilauea (there's a great place to grab a burger there too). The little town of Kapoho is about 7 miles away where you find great restaurants, with fine dining for a very reasonable price. We loved Kaleo's (American), Paulo's Bistro (Italian - our favorite, incredible food and delightful personal service!), and Ning's (Thai). Here you can really relax, get away and have a wonderful Hawaiian experience that even some people living on the Big Island don't know exist. Last comment. Be sure to read the stories of everyone who has stayed at the hexagon house. What great times people have had here over the years.

Owner response:Joe: We are so happy that you enjoyed your stay at the Kapoho Beach Hideaway (Hexagon House). Please come back again! The Management

"We loved our stay at the Hex house, esp. the ocean breeze, beautiful view, and quiet neighborhood at night. It's far from the traffic in Hilo and Kona. Wife is a former Hilo girl, so we have been to the Island a number of times, but this was a unique experience. Swam with a sea turtle! No need for AC - ocean breeze is free and environmentally clean." - Jan and Naomi Nelson

Aloha! We had a wonderful stay at your home! Tracy (hubby) swam daily with the turtles and tropical fish while mommy & baby watched... We all enjoyed listening to the sound of the thundering waves. At night when it was clear, we lied out on the lanai and took in the stars - some shooting stars were seen too. Other guests: try Luquin's in Pahoa for breakfast - the Ahi & eggs is fabulous.

The Hexagon House is "fab"! We love the cool breezes and wonderful sounds of the surf. We checked out suggested spots from visitor's book - which helped a lot! Your neighbors are wonderful. We will be back. Thank you...

We had a great time at the Hex House. We were greeted by Gwenet who gave us the low-down on the area and got us pointed in the right direction. Your binder/guide book and "The Big Island Revealed" were great resources. The kids enjoyed snorkeling at Champagne Pond and Kapoho Tide Pools. Volcano Nat'l Park also provided interesting sights. We took a helicopter tour over the volcano, which was great. The trade winds provide for good sleeping conditions - we were originally concerned about no A/C but it worked out great.

We had a wonderful time at Hexagon House. Loved the surf and the trades (no AC necessary with these breezes). Loved cookin' meals in the kitchen, lookin' at stars, exploring the area. Wild weather & coast. Thank you - we LOVED our 4 days!

The warmth and beauty out here is amazing. The tidal pools were great!! Some of the best snorkeling on the island. Champagne Pond under a full moon with sea turtles was one of the most memorable events of my life. Down the road at the green pond there was a really fun rope swing. Definitely check out Kehena black sand beach 9 miles south down 137 and the lava at Volcano National Park.

Enjoyed the scenery and peacefulness. Thanks to neighbors on left – gave us permission to use their swimming access. Enjoyed “snooping” around Kapoho area waters. Loved our meals on the decks and using BBQ grill. Great fruits & veggies from farmers market in Hilo Wed & Sat.

We stayed for a week at a resort in Kona. Your house was the cure. It is wonderful. Snorkeling at the tide pools was as good as any other place on the island. Live coral and brilliantly clear water. We even snorkeled in the bay in front of the house. Although less interesting, it was still lots of fun for a dip. Although our entire trip to Hawaii has been terrific, your house provided the first place we could really relax. We love it. Cute geckos, the breeze, 360 degree views, the purr of the waves, and the most vivid night stars we have ever seen all combined to evaporate tension. Thanks again!

My wife & I thank you for your wonderful Hex House. This is what the Big Island is all about. After 7 days in Kona, this place is just amazing – the plant material, the wind, the ocean. There is no doubt that Megan and I will always remember our honeymoon at Kapoho. Thanks and God bless

Aloha! As a resident of the Big Island for over 14 years, I just had to say that staying in Kapoho has been one of the most relaxing mini-vacations we’ve had. The house was clean, the beds were comfortable. We enjoyed snorkeling, hiking & watching the surfing at Pohoiki. Watching the sunrise instead of sunset on the ocean and no vog was a nice change from Kona side. The hexagon shape of the house was a lot of fun. I especially liked the upstairs loft. The view is one of the nicest things. Listening to the waves crash as the trade winds blow thru. People in the area were very friendly, and the lack of traffic was nice (try Kona at 5pm!!!!) We had a great time & plan to visit again. Aloha & Mahalo!

We really enjoyed staying here! It's like having a second honeymoon, except with a 17mo old baby and one on the way! Everything is so beautiful here! We explored a lot around here along with driving all over the island. One of the highlights was swimming with the turtles in Champagne Pond "WOW"! We hope to come back again - this is truly paradise and "The Real Hawaii" Many Thanks!
