THE SIZZLE:

Some of the comments our guests have made are:

- “Amazing views!”
- “The photos don’t do it justice.”
- “The Filbert Steps are so romantic.”
- “I loved waking up to the wild parrots in the morning.”

In this well-loved city, Telegraph Hill is San Francisco’s most charming neighborhood. Offering spectacular views of the Bay and its bridges, the San Francisco skyline, and the East Bay, Telegraph Hill couples Bohemian history with walking-distance convenience to Chinatown, North Beach (the heart of the Italian community and the 1950's 'beatnik' heritage of Grant Avenue), Pier 39, the Embarcadero, and the Financial District/Union Square.

Within this special neighborhood lies the jewel: the Filbert Street Steps. Historic and much-photographed, the Steps are the soul of Telegraph Hill: quiet (there is no vehicular traffic), a favorable 'micro climate' (the City might be foggy but sunny on the Steps), with verdant flower gardens and the famous 'Parrots of Telegraph Hill'. Because of this uniqueness, houses on the Steps rarely come on the real estate market; they are passed from generation to generation or snapped up by the neighborhood residents.

Here is your chance to stay in a unique Filbert Steps property, a three-unit building with magnificent Bay and City views designed by noted architect Henry Hester. 2 units are immediately available. Both are two-story apartments, with a bedroom overlooking a living room (with wood-burning fireplace) and kitchen/dining area. These units were combined in the 1960's as the 'bachelor pad' of actor George C. Scott in the movie, 'Petulia', but are two separate units again...as the architect had intended.

These units appeal to different visitors depending on when they are going to be in the unit.

Filbert Steps View:

If you are going to spend the day hanging out on the Filbert Steps, this unit is for you. This is perfect for the visitor who wants to relax during the day and enjoy an amazing view of the Filbert Steps, Coit Tower and the San Francisco Bay.

City Lights View:

If you are going to be working all day and want a place to unwind and enjoy the views at night, this unit is the definite choice. Imagine coming “home” and relaxing in the living room looking at the lights of the Bay Bridge and then falling asleep with a view of the city lights (specifically, the Transamerica Pyramid.) These are great views during the day too, but they really sparkle at night.

Although each apartment is perfect for a couple, the living room sofa in each converts to a Queen bed. Fully-furnished with modern art from the owner’s extensive collection (including canvases from Stanford University artist-in-residence Dani Tull), bed and bath linens, TV/DVD, audio system (with CD library), a fully-equipped kitchen (except dishwasher), and other amenities.

The building has no parking, but street parking is available. San Francisco’s iconic Coit Tower is only steps away from the building’s front door and offers additional parking.

The 39 Coit bus stops a few doors away and makes a loop from Fisherman's Wharf through North Beach and up to Coit Tower all day. A laundromat is 1 block from the building. The shops and restaurants of North Beach are a 3-block walk.

“San Francisco has only one drawback – ‘tis hard to leave.”
Rudyard Kipling

My wife an I enjoyed our four nights in the City Lights View apartment. The views are great and it's in a great location. The apartment is very tasteful and it was a plus to have the Zagat Guide available for restaurant reviews. Two restaurants which I would highly recommend are Isa in the Marina District on Steiner and North Beach's Ideale on Grant. It is a real Italian restaurant - it seemed that all of the staff spoke Italiano and the food was molto bueno. We discussed limoncello recipes with our waiter and he brought us a little taste of his homemade limoncello. It was just as good or better than my home made limoncello. We walk most places but on occasion use MUNI. The #39 bus takes you very close to the apartment but it runs very sporadically. We did finally get to use it on our last evening. I guess we are too impatient to wait for more than 30 minutes when we could just walk up the hill. The DeYoung Museum is well worth a visit especially since the "Girl With a Pearl Exhibit" is there. We spent almost six hours there and still did not see everything. My only disappointment was not seeing any parrots - next time

My sister-in-law and I just came back from a *wonderful* stay in the Filbert Steps unit. This was my second stay there -- my husband and I had a marvelous time at the place two years ago, and I loved the place so much that I suggested that she and I go there for our "girls' getaway." We both want to come back -- that says it all. The pictures are very accurate -- the views are, indeed, that good! (The view of the Bay Bridge from the big window over the toilet was terrific....) I lived in the Bay Area many years ago and Telegraph Hill -- the Filbert Steps and the Greenwich Steps in particular -- were perhaps my favorite spot in the City. I was so surprised when I was looking for a place two years ago and actually found this one on the steps! And the place is spectacular!! Patrick was very helpful with arrival instructions and many suggestions for restaurants, transportation, etc. Do buy a transit pass. We paid $28 for 7 days and, with cable cars up to $6 per ride, the pass was a great bargain. We could go anywhere -- so easy! My only caution would be about the steps. My husband, my sister-in-law and I are all in our 60s and had no trouble, but if you can't do stairs then look elsewhere. If you can do steps and want the best location and view in the city, then reserve this place!

Patrick was an excellent host, providing a lot of advice about restaurants in the area and responding quickly when we had a question. He was very flexible when our flights delayed us by a day. The location of the unit was excellent, just steps from Coit Tower. That also made walking uphill a bit of challenge. If you have mobility issues, consider using the bus or cab. Shopping and restaurants are well within walking distance, and Fisherman's Wharf is easily accessible on foot or by bus. All in all, we had a terrific time. Kudos to Patrick for helping along the way!

The views from this unit were incredible. When we first arrived, I was concerned about the location (how to get up the hill with a child at the end of the day) but the muni system was so easy to navigate with the City pass and the bus stopped at Coit Tower. You can walk just about anywhere from here. Patrick was a wealth of knowledge about the area and provided tons of brochures. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because a deep cleaning is in order. We highly recommend staying here if you want a comfortable, quiet place to stay but close to all activitities and the muni system.

Owner response: Hi Mary - I'm glad you enjoyed your stay, but sorry about your concerns for the need for a deep cleaning. The units are in the process of being completely overhauled between guests. We have already done the big items like a new kitchen floor and painting the walls(no easy task with 17 foot ceilings.) But we're not done yet. Painting the trim work and bookcases are next and we are going to finish with new windows. We should be done within the next few weeks.

My husband and I loved the view from Telegraph Hill. The apartment was located in the perfect location with a Million dollar view. Transporation was so easy with the City pass (18 steps to the bus stop) which took us anywhere we wanted to go. The parrots of Telegraph Hill were an incredible site to see every morning. We couldn't have found a more beautiful place to have stayed. The Filbert Steps are amazing. Coit Tower just outside. We highly recommend staying here if you want a clean, beautiful, comfortable and yet quiet place to stay but not far at all from all the activity you could ever wish to partake. Patrick was very helpful with any of our questions or needs, even providing materials that covered activites and attractions of San Francisco. Wonderful host! We will be back :-)...

I visited in September and loved everything about the place. The location is amazing. If you've never seen the Steps before, you're in for a treat. There are magnificent views from every room. The owner has an encyclopedic knowledge of the neighborhood and is very generous with his time and advice.

I've lived in the city and visited, since I was a very young child, more times than I can count and this place was hands down the most "authentic" SF experience I've ever had. The views from the Filbert stairs apartment are stunning, one window had a perfect shot of Coit Tower, and ALL the others, gorgeous views of the city, Bay Bridge and the lush gardens. You can walk almost anywhere from this location and if you get tired there is public transit very nearby, we also had no trouble grabbing cabs despite San Francisco's reputation as a tough taxi city. North Beach is just a few blocks away with excellent restaurants and nightlife, we walked to the Embarcadero and along the waterfront ALMOST all the way to AT & T park for a Giants game. We were "followed" nearly downtown by the flock of parrots who entertained us all weekend. They hung out in the trees around the apartment everyday and made the spectacular view even more fun and interesting. If you go, watch the documentary about them first as their history is very cool. Patrick was the perfect host, helpful but not intrusive. The story of the his family, their properties and history is a must read. Being owners of a mid-century home ourselves we loved the style and uniqueness of the house compared to the surrounding neighborhood. My family was already talking about coming back the first day we arrived. If you're looking for a true San Francisco experience then this is the place!

We stayed 4 nights in the "city view" apartment but the best view was from small side window. Location was lovely on historic leafy Filbert Steps & Coit Tower just a few steps away. Apartment pretty much as photos displayed & was comfortably furnished, although perhaps due for a spring clean. Owner was helpful & very pleasant. Apartment is close to many places of interest which was fun despite the steep hills & numerous steps! Coit Tower bus runs until 7pm if you need it. A beautiful spot & would recommend.
