I rented this house because it reminded me so much of my own. It was well appointed in a truly beautiful area with a great view of the ocean. We loved the cows in the back yard. The only real negative was the barking dog next door - but I understand that is a temporary situation. The yogurt/snack stand across the street was very convenient and yummy. If you like gardens, the Botatanical Gardens located on the Scenic Drive should not be missed. I am an avid gardener and was blown away - as good as Buschard Gardens in Canada.

This was the best accommodation we stayed in while in Hawaii. The house suited our tastes fantastically. Open, comfortable, lay back and out of the way. Only problem was that we didn’t stay longer.
Owner response:Thank you very much for your comments and taking the time to post a review for us. You are right that most people wish that they have stayed longer here on the East Coast of the Big Island, as there is so much to do here, and such a diversity to choose from. Only choice you have now is to come back to the islands again! I send my Aloha and Mahalo to Australia from the Big Island of Hawaii! Lyndy

We would thoroughly recommend the Malie Bree for anyone wishing to explore the Big Island, or the Hilo side. Everything about the house is fantastic - from the grounds, to the views, to the inside and the facilities. Lyndy couldn't have been more helpful with advice and information, through to providing some sweatshirts and a coat for a trip up Moana Kea. If you want to stay just out of town, to have your own hideaway with peace and quiet, but near enough for the travel not to be a bind, then this place is just right. We loved it, and wish we had spent longer here (have to plan better next time). Thoroughly recommended !

Hi Lyndy, thank you so much for our great vacation in your fabulous house - it's not just a vacation rental, it's a home away from home. We started to make plans to move in at once! One downside: your photos on Homeaway and VRBO don't show how huge and special the house is when you arrive! The architecture of this house on wooden pools is perfect and we haven't seen another house like yours before. Modern amemities like washer/dryer, dishwasher, Internet, huge master bedroom shower, TVs included. In the mornings we have seen ships passing by - ocean view is included. It only takes 10 minutes to Hilo, we have been to the Farmer's Marked even on other days than on Wednesdays and Saturdays - tropical fruit like apple bananas, passion fruits, lychees, purple sweet potatoes.... you have to stock on every day... Puna District, warm pools and the glow of fresh lava, Volcanoes National Park (glow of the vent at Jaggar Museum), sunset at Mauna Kea and star gazing, Rainbow Falls and for our sons much more important: the pools and cliffs above (jumping), Waipiu Valley.....: one week is not enough to explore the most important sights within the range of Malia Bree. We have to come back as soon as possible, Lyndy, thank you so much! Karin, Rolf, Chris and Mike from Germany
Owner response:Mahalo for your wonderful comments. One day, I will step into this generation and learn how to make and post some footage for You Tube and try to capture the home and the Onomea area. I must enlist the kids to help me. Thank you for your comments about the home. The home really does give you an incredible feeling from the moment you walk through the door, while standing in the kitchen under that 20 foot high frosted cupola, or on the decks in the breezes. Your family gets the gold star of probably being the most adventuresome in finding the nooks and crannies of the island and island life. Thanks for sharing your moments with me my "Cliff Jumping Coconut Kings"! A hui hou (till we meet again) Lyndy

This was our second trip to this lovely home on Onomea Bay. As was our first trip, the house was well maintained and clean. The only thing more lovely than the home is the setting, which is peaceful personified. For anyone who enjoys Hawaii, time spent in the Hilo area is a must. The waterfalls, the flora, and the people are unequalled. Our only disappointment was the chance to meet Lyndy, the owner, in person, who has always been most pleasant and helpful on the telephone. While in Hilo, do not fail to visit the planetarium at the University of Hawaii in Hilo.
Owner response:Thank you very much for your kind words and enjoyment of the property. I appreciate your comments and give credit to the wonderful people that I encounter as the best part of the Vacation Rental business. Yes, I will make it a priority to meet you in person on your next go-around. Mahalo for your continued patronage! Lyndy

The 4 of us had a great time during our stay, and a large part of it was due to how comfortable, new, and inviting this home is. Well appointed, well laid out, inviting, and very convenient. Walked across the street to What's Shakin every day for our smoothie fix (man those were good!!!). Drove into Hilo for some dining and snorkeling, as well as on some of the scenic drives close to the home. WE'LL BE BACK!
Owner response:Aloha Coloradans! I appreciate your taking the time to jot down such a kind and wonderful review for us. What's Shakin' makes the best smoothies and the largest plate of chicken nachos that I am a real sucker for. Hope that you'll be able to stay a bit longer on your next trip here to investigate the rest of the Big Island. There's so much to see and do here! Mahalo and Aloha, Lyndy

If you need to get away and relax look no further this was the most relaxing vacation I've ever been on. We had such a wonderful time snorkeling, sunning, water falls and 8 miles to Hilo. This home is on the Scenic Route and is in an ideal location. It has a bbq which was nice to grill shrimp kabobs and watch the sun go down. Aloha.
Owner response:Mahalo for your visit! We do try to provide most everything that you will need for your vacation. Glad to hear that you have made some lasting family memories. That's what a vacation is all about! A hui hou (till we meet again) Lyndy

Our second visit to the Malia Bree was even better than the first! We stayed at the house for a month and invited our neighbors, from Littleton, to spend a week with us. Relaxation is the key word in this little slice of heaven on earth. If you don't know how to relax, you are close enough to just about everything to go, go, go where your heart desires. The owner is full of ideas and information to make your stay incredible or just plain comfortable. This will not be a big city or a resort vacation. It's more like paradise.
Owner response:Mahalo Slaters! Such a pleasure to have made some life-long friends by way of all things, a vacation rental. We are always enriched by your visits and have such fun and wonderful memories that we continue to build on. Always welcome to come "home"! Mahalo, Lyndy

We had to tear ourselves away from the Malia Bree after spending two weeks there celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. We cannot say enough good things about this home. After 12 hours of traveling, our first impression was "Wow!" The interior is beautifully maintained and decorated and we couldn't believe we were greeted by soft lights, music and fresh flowers. The next morning we awoke to birds singing, sunshine, lush vegetation and a fantastic view (the pictures here don't do it justice). As if all this weren't enough, we never wanted for anything. Lyndy bent over backward to make sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed. Wireless internet and digital voice made it possible for us to stay in touch with family and friends. We didn't watch much television but the flatscreen HDTV and access to MANY channels would be very appealing to families. The famous smoothie shop across the street was nice too! We highly recommend the Malia Bree to families who are looking for a lot to do, as well as couples like us who were looking for a quiet, peaceful retreat.

The Malia Bree at Onomea is truly a very beautiful, comfortable, and peaceful home to stay in the Big Island. My family truly enjoyed our 4 nights there. It's so relaxing sitting at the lanai to enjoy the nice views, watching for whales, dolphins, and ships go by out in the ocean. We love the tropical grounds and hearing the sounds of the birds. The hale is centrally located and it was an easy drive to other places and attractions. The weather was perfect for us and we hope to return again in the future! We just can't stop talking about what a wonderful time we had there!!!

Ditto to what everyone else has said...except we didn't experience the wild pig! Viewing the night sky-including Jupiter from the visitor station on Mauna Kea was quite spectacular--also the Botanical Gardens and of course Volcano Nat'l Park. Enjoyed the diversity of this side of the island--now we're headed to Kona/Kohala to relax on the beach. The home was just delightful for us and or four young children!!! Jim and Jo Ellen

The soft sounds of the rain at night lulled us to sleep and the birds chattering woke us up every morning. It was truly a tropical retreat for us. The house is very comfortable and made a great base station for our daily treks. Guy, Leslie Anchorage, Alaska .... Laurie Washington, DC

Lindy & Tina, My brother and I had a wonderful time staying in this beautiful, peaceful, and quiet home Malia Bree. The setting and views are fantastic. Combined with the subtle sounds of the rain, birds, and other creatures, it was like being in a rain forest. Our stay here was refreshing, truly a nice getaway. Dealing with both of you was such a pleasure. I would highly recommend the Malia Bree to anyone. Time sure passes by quickly, however I will always remember my stay here. Mahalo, Dave San Diego, CA

We have traveled all over the world, and truely this home is one of the loveliest residences we've ever encountered. Thank you so much for sharing your home with total strangers. We have cared for it as if it were indeed our own home. The wild boar that acted as our alarm clock was delightful, we laughed ourselves silly. He made a slight mess, but I couldn't shoo him away. We are quite sorry to be leaving here. Thank you again. Remy and Gary

What a wonderful home in such a tropical neighborhood. This vacation home offers so much with a great location--loved the smoothies across the street and we loved the close proximity to Hilo and the Volcano. The rain at night soothed us to sleep. Thank you for such a clean organized home away from home. Warmest Aloha, Brooke, Josh Pattie and Dan
