Puako is a small, quaint, oceanfront community on the Kahala Coast of the Big Island located about 30 miles from Kailua Kona. The pristine warm waters of the Pacific Ocean, which has world class snorkeling and diving, is within yards at Puako Bay. The islands largest white sand beach, Hapuna, is in a neighboring cove only two miles away.
Puako Beach is only minutes from Mauna Lani and Mauna Kea Resorts, yet Puako Beach, is a delightfully quaint little Hawaiian Village, hidden away like a treasure of old Hawaii. You are only 12 miles from Waimea town, the home of the Parker Ranch just up the road from Puako.
Our ocean-close condominium is fully furnished with everything you will need from the kitchen dishes to linens on the beds. We have three bedrooms, one with twin beds, one with queen bed, and one with king bed, and sleeps six very comfortably. There are two full baths as well. We have a oceanview lanai, with a gas barbecue, and table and chairs for your outside dining pleasure. You can relax in comfort, or enjoy the beautiful beach across the road from your door.

Quiet, Convenient Condo - great value vacation

Puako is my idea of a perfect place to stay. It's small and charming, with a quaint country store and walkable streets. Why stay in a cookie cutter resort? This condo is typical of the time it was built, unpretentious and comfortable. Although unit is on the first floor, it is very quiet and the shrubs shield the lanai so it doesn't feel exposed (just ask the gekkos). Having 2 full bathrooms is a big plus. The small galley style kitchen is well equipped (I'd love to see a liquid measuring cup,but that's just me). The condo has a closet of assorted beach gear to use and lots of towels. The washer & dryer came in handy and we used the gas grill daily. Bedrooms all have ceiling fans. (NOTE: keeping sliding doors and entry door open allows air to flow freely and condo stays cool ) The condo bldg has a great pool or you could walk a few minutes to access Puako bay for swimming and snorkeling. The building has recycling bins (yeah!! - I love to recycle - feels like home) Bonus feature: building has its own lemon, lime, and grapefruit trees and we were lucky enough to get some of the fruit. Puako is centrally located and we easily drove up and down the coast for touring , beaching (Hapuna and A' beach), and shopping. I highly recommend going to the local fish market in Kawaihae ( on Hgwy 270, about a 10 minute drive) and across the street from the fish market is Avenue Shave Ice, the BEST shave ice we found on the island. The condo owner is very nice to work with and takes time to make sure instructions and everything are in order. She even called me by phone to answer my questions directly rather than play tag with email. It's chancey to rent off the web, but Karen is trustworthy. I'm saving my pennies to go back there.

My husband and I were looking for a well deserved holiday and found it here. The condo is huge and could easily accommodate 3 couples or a family, and cooking most of our own meals saved us a bundle. There's a corner store is conveniently located next door for those last minute drinks and snacks. We loved that it was so close to Hapuna beach and Beach 69, although my favorite beach by far is the one in Waipo valley (well worth the hike). The fresh limes and mangos growing outside the condo were a definite bonus as well. If you're going to visit the Big Island, this is the place to stay. my only suggestion is that if you arrive late at night, like we did, bring a flashlight with you. The apartment numbers are hard to find in the dark, as is the key hole.
Owner response:Our spacious, well appointed condo at Puako Beach not only accomadates six people easily, with it's three good size bedrooms and two full baths, but it's location is ideal. Most folks don"t realize that from our condo you can make day trips around the Island to see all it's fabulous attractions. Rather than staying on the Hilo side, where it's problay going to rain, just book our condo for the duration of your trip, and make day trips to the Volcano and other parts of the Island, and stay where the sun shines all the time! Yes, we also have many tropical fruits around the condo for your picking, including mangos, limes, bananas and grapefruit. Not to mention our great " General Store" next door to the condo, for all those last minute things you forgot to get. The condo is super close to beach, has a general store next door, which was handy. The general store no longer sells fresh made pizza, store owner very friendly. Beach was very beautiful. Karen the owner was more than accommodating, due to having staying at another rental previous hers and flight out of Kona was very late evening, Karen let us check in early and check out late.

We have all the beach items you need, from coolers to beach chairs, Boogie boards, snorkel equipment, umbrella, and beach towels. and kids toys. It's great for day trips around the Island, or to go to any of the major resorts, restrauants, shopping, and all the local tourists sights. Our condo is clean and comfortable with all the amenities you will need for a great, relaxing vacation The three bedrooms are spacious, filled with sunlight, and cool breezes. We have two full bathrooms, that have hairdryers, and even curling irons. We have a washer and dryer for your use in the unit, and and ironing board and iron as well. The kitchen is fully equiped with everything you will need, including a full array of spices. The Lanai has a gas BBQ for your use, and a dining table and chairs. We offer very reasonable rates, and have Special Rates for Spring right now, so hurry and book, for April/May/ and June/2011.

We really enjoyed our stay at this Puako condo. My husband and I and our 2 twenty-something sons stayed for 5 nights. It is very spacious, clean, well-stocked and well-located. Close to many amazing beaches. Our favorites were Beach 69 (really close to the condo) and Makalawena (a drive and hike, but worth it). It was nice to have a grocery store right next store. We got some great papayas there. The condo has lots of amenities. Very nice to have the beach chairs, towels and especially the boogie boards. Wi-fi would have been nice, but it is vacation so an electronic break is not a bad thing. I have rented through VRBO a number of times and Karen is THE BEST to deal with. She is very trustworthy, responsive and provides lots of useful info. I will recommend it to friends and hope to stay there again.

The beaches, which you can take your pick of, are within walking distance of a couple minutes, to a couple miles. They are all great, some for snorkleing and Swimming, some for surfing and Boogie boarding, some for just relaxing in a beach chair under an umbrella, and reading a good book. Just take your choice! The weather is always great, no matter what time of year you come. We supply everything you need for the beach including beach chairs, coolers, beach mats, snorkel gear, Boogie boards, Beach toys, and beach towels. Our condo also provides all the comforts of home, with enough room for three couples, or A family of six, with three spacious bedrooms and Two full baths. Our Lanai has a great gas BBQ, table and chairs, so outdoor eating is wonderful. We love to hear all the fantastic feedback from our guests, and always welcome them back with discounted rates. Great Time a Puako Beach!

The place was roomy and clean and right across the street from the beach. Although in front of the parking lot the place was very quite at night. Sara (the apartment Manager) took very good care of the place and made us feel welcome. The kitchen was nice, although small it had a mini dishwasher which was very handy. Also having the washer and dryer in the place helped a lot with the two kids getting dirty everyday. Our two young kids loved walking across the street to see turtles and play on the beach. Almost everyday we did the short drive over to Waialea Beach (or Beach 69) which was great for snorkeling and had a nice sandy beach with plenty of shade. Almost every day we saw turtles swimming and many beautiful fish (bring your own snorkeling gear like I did if your serious.) One time a large pod of Dolphins swam in the the bay and we had a great time swimming around with them. It was a short drive to Waikoloa Village which had a large grocery store with some great fresh food and many local items. We used the BBQ almost every day for fresh vegetables, fish or steaks. The grocery store next door was convenient for some small items we needed right away. Also a stop at Costco by the airport help with many essentials for our 11 day stay (and also to fill up the rental car with Gas on the way back.) The location was a great central spot for exploring the rest of the island. We look forward to our next visit to finish our exploration and we will definitely be staying here again. Karen was great with my many questions by email and she responded right away. Also she sent back the deposit promptly which made the whole experience that much more enjoyable. For the price this place was Excellent but I would not rate it such because the building is from '74 and the interior is a bit dated (but clean) and I would not want to give you the idea that it was the Hilton but the photos show that. I would highly recommend this place if your a person like me that likes simple clean living in a spacious place in a excellent location away from it all (but you can drive to it all if you really want to :-) PS it was great star viewing at night.

With the washer and dryer in the unit, it's so easy to "travel light", since you can wash your clothes right there. We also provide a ironing board and iron for your use. The location is perfect for day trips around the island to see all the great attractions, or if you just want to hang out at the condo, the beach is right there as well. This is a great family place. Puako Beach is a quiet neighborhood, with a sweet General Store next door for supplies, even floaties for the kids to use in the pool. We went every morning to see the green sea turtles come up to the shallows for a breakfast of seaweed-on-the-rocks. Several tide pool beaches are close at hand. The pool was a hit with both kids and adults.

The famous "Beach 69" is just a short walk up the road from the condo, or you can just cross the road to the almost private beach there! We supply most of the beach equipment you will need, including cooler, umbrella, beach chairs, beachmats, boogie boards, snorkel equipment, and small kids toys as well. We also have a wonderfully well stocked General Store right next door to the condo. It's grounds have fruit trees including banana, mango, grapefruit, and limes ripe for the picking for you to enjoy. Our beaches are known for having the best snorkeling on the island, and the greatest number of Green Sea Turtles. Our family had a wonderful stay in Puako, it is a remarkable area of the Big Island. We had a great experience at the condo, it was well thought out and had everything we needed. The folks who are there year-round are very friendly and engaging and we enjoyed the tips on various items from best snorkeling "entry" spots within walking distance (there are several nice ones) to odds & ends about the condos. Our kids enjoyed the pool, it was nice and not crowded at all, I swam a lot in the ocean, there are several great areas and the entire area is spectacular for watching sea life. We also really loved the location of Puako as a base for amazing outings to various extraordinary places, while feeling more remote and quiet. We love the nearby beaches. Hapuna is a classic, absolutely wonderful experience and we went there almost every day, the white sands and outrageous waters are brilliant to swim and play in. Beach 69 and some of the smaller beaches in Puako are all remarkable, each in a different way. I truly enjoyed the snorkeling in the local area (in addition to various areas on the Big Island), and found it to be quite extraordinary. Hawaii is a phenomenal place- the natural environment, the culture, it is magnificent and Puako is truly a great location to experience Hawaii. These condominiums and this unit are in a great location, on the edge of Puako so there is really easy access to extraordinary beaches right nearby, within walking, biking or very short driving distance, it's just great.

We have stayed here three times. Karen has been steadily updating the condo in the years since we first started staying there. We have never had a problem with cleanliness, and appreciate the updates.The condo is pretty well equipped, however a few more pots would be handy. We like having two bathrooms and the laundry. We are in love with Puako. That said it is not for everyone... don't expect an exciting night life, or lots of nearby restaurants. If you love walking, checking out the different ocean accesses and a laid back relaxed place this is it. One of the best things is watching the sunsets from the beach access across the road. The picture (white building with beach in front of it) was taken some time ago, there are now new houses there , but there is a beach access beside them.

Thanks so much for a wonderful vacation. The condo was clean, roomy, and airy. It was fully stocked with all sorts of ammenities- beach towels, blender etc. It is surrounded by plumeria trees and my daughter loved gathering the fallen flowers each morning and making fresh leis. The beach is right there and there are wonderful snorkeling/dive spots on the incredible reef- with easy beach entry. It is away from tourists in a really nice not crowded neighborhood- great for jogging. You can readily access Hapuna and Mauna Kea a couple of miles away. There is a great local store right next door with everything you need and a friendly atmosphere. The pool and grounds are clean, everyone is nice, and it is quiet and safe- but welcoming for kids. I hope to visit often
