Location: Manton Valley, Mount Lassen, Shasta Cascade, California, USA (Sacramento 2.5 hours & Redding 45 minutes)

Accommodations:  House, 3 Bedrooms + Sunroom, 2 Baths (Sleeps 11-13)

A fishing vacation for the whole family! We have accomodations for 11 in beds (five twin beds, a king, a queen, and a queen sized futon in the living room), plus two child sized futons stashed in the back closet, for additional floor sleeping, which makes it comfy for 13! Plenty of sheets, blankets, and towels. It's a great place for a family reunion!

And our house is only minutes to some of the best wineries in the area! The Manton Valley now boasts five separate wineries with different varietals and vintages. Google the winery website at Visit Manton CA for tasting hours and addresses.

Trout Pond in the Pines is nestled on a knoll amidst 15 acres of pine and cedar trees and hidden from the road on a private-gated driveway. There are two ponds on the property - take a stroll up the driveway from the house to the smaller upper pond, where the goldfish live. A large deck overlooks the large trout pond where children can fish and catch tadpoles. We stock it each year with rainbow trout. A fishing license is NOT necessary, since this is a private pond, and you will have the only acccess! There is a small sandy beach area for summer swimming. Bring your water toys, buckets, and nets for catching tadpoles and some hiking shoes - both are popular pastimes for the guests. We have a kayak that you can use on this pond.

The forest is fairly open for strolling, so that even small children will enjoy exploring the property. There is no poison oak in this area, and no poisonous snakes. Both ponds are favorites of the wildlife, and in the early morning wood ducks, mallards, and Canadian geese will often fly in and land on the water.

Manton is on the East side of Highway 5 amid some of the best trout fishing waters in North America. Blessed with icy waters from the Mount Lassen glaciers, this area has emerged over the years as one of the premier trout fishing destinations. There are several local guides who can take you into "private waters" for a day or more of trophy catch-and-release fishing.

If fishing is not your main interest, you can explore the Mount Lassen National Forest and the Lassen Volcanic National Park. Redding and Red Bluff are each about 45 minutes away for major shopping, and Shingletown (25 minutes away) has a good local supermarket, gas station, car mechanic, and library. Redding Airport is the closest airport with regular flights from San Francisco. The small town of Manton (population 400) has only the Post Office, and "The Diner" for food and a mini-market.

Comments from some recent guests:
"Just wanted to let you know we had the BEST vacation. You truly have a beautiful piece of property and a wonderful home. Everything we needed, the house had. My daughter said it was her best vacation ever (and we just went to Disneyland for Thanksgiving)!! She actually caught the biggest fish and put her older brothers to shame. She hooked a catfish the first night and it was 2 feet long, 10 pounds. Boy was she excited. Neither she nor her brother could reel it in, dad had to bring it in for her. She's told everyone about it.

We can't wait to come up and stay again. If you get a chance maybe you can let me know what dates are available from September till the end of December. It looked like from the guest book, you have many visitors. Again, thanks so much for letting us use your home." TF, Antioch, CA

"Wonderful place, beautiful property, cozy home, wish we lived up here." JM, Ceres, CA

"Great time! the kids loved fishing - they could catch them all by themselves! A storm blew in and we stayed cozy. Thanks for a relaxing time." JY, San Rafael, CA

"You have a beautiful home, lots of good vibes. No need to leave the property. We found everything we needed in the way of utensils, (a rareity for a rental home!)....." JC, Pleasant Hill, CA

Trout Pond in the Pines

Relaxing private Lassen area retreat.

We just stayed here for a few days and had a great time. The property is incredibly private and you cannot see a neighbor in any direction. The star of the property is the pond and was a hit with the kids, we really appreciate them having the kayaks available which we just loved paddling around in. We spent the whole first day without leaving the property. The kids loved fishing and catching tad poles. We didn't catch any fish but we saw plenty and were amazed at the amount of wildlife that we did see in and around the pond. We saw many huge catfish, trout, goldfish, lots of frogs and tadpoles and even turtles swimming around. As for the house, the pictures really don't do it justice, it is quite nice with all the comforts you could need for a stay. The bedrooms are a good size with the master having a large open bathroom with a claw foot tub. The living area is also well laid out for lounging around and the satellite TV was welcome for the kids in the morning and adults in the evening. The WiFi internet was also a welcome availability and we did not have any problems with it. The kitchen is very well equipped and has a lovely view down to the pond, there is also a dining nook in the kitchen as well as a formal dining area. We were also surprised to see a large sun room on the back of the house with two beds which would be great for kids. The only negative would be that it is a little remote and you have to drive a way to get anywhere, but it is not that bad and we were able to drive into Lassen park and enjoy a day around there without any problems. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would recommend this property to others.

Astounding Privacy. Fantastic Time.

We just got back from a week's stay at this location. We'd been looking for a vacation rental near Lassen Volcanic, to easily visit the park, but wound up spending 2 of our five days without leaving the property at all! Details: The home is *wonderful*. And the owner's book collection is right up my alley, too, which was fun. The owner was very very helpful (though working from Hawaii), and her in-area manager was great, as well. We had no complaints along those lines. The kitchen is well stocked with the tools we needed, and even a small smattering of typical spices was on hand. And the property was very surprisingly private. I'm not used to homes where you can't see your neighbors, but this place was great. While we were at "home" there, skinnydipping in the pond was our routine, and there really was no reason to dress between the pond and the house. (Or, for that matter, any number of hikes deeper into the woods.) The biggest issue we really had was how confused our GPS navigator was with respect to these back roads --- don't trust yours! Also: the nearest food and gas are quite a drive (and an uphill elevation change) away, so don't arrive with an empty tank. The Internet service there is also a bit sub-par; the link from the house to the ISP via cable modem seemed to drop out for 20 minutes at a time about once an hour. Annoying, but we didn't go there for electronic distraction. The kayaks were a *star* attraction at the pond; our kids spent the days we were there catching and releasing tadpoles for hours on end. Turtles and a pair of 3-foot catfish rounded out the wildlife we saw in the pond... Fishing wasn't something we tried. To summarize: lovely location. Serene. Private. And *really* off the beaten path.
