Location: Machiasport, Down East, Maine, USA (1.75 hours to Bangor; 90 minutes to Bar Harbor Airport)
Accommodations: Waterview Cape at Holmes Bay, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 5-7)
Come and enjoy this updated antique, cape-style home on a bluff overlooking Holmes Bay. All new wood shingles, farmer's porch (the full moon is gorgeous over the bay), carpet, paint, linoleum flooring and modern conveniences makes this an ideal destination for a fun, relaxing, comfortable, and economical family vacation. All three bedrooms have a unique view of the ocean as does the living room and dining area. The game room in the rear of the house is a place to re-live the simple pleasures of your youth - cribbage, poker, checkers, chess, board games, puzzles, and a library of books will bring a smile to the face of kids of all ages.
You will have plenty to do at the cottage including horseshoes, badminton, croquet, wiffle ball, computer games, bocce, cookouts, and lobster bakes - fresh from the BBS Lobster Company pound at Bucks Harbor. Each day brings an adventure of your own making. To the north are a number of historic towns including:
Cutler - Ten-mile hiking trail along the Bold Coast, boat tours to Seal Island to observe the Puffins and thousand-year-old Indian petroglyphs, lovely working harbor.
Eastport - Old Sow Whirlpool, Passamaquoddy Indian Festival in August, Eastport Wind Jammers whale watching and sunset cruises, Salmon Festival in September and the largest 4th of July celebration in Maine - Eastport was the last piece of land returned to the USA by the British following the War of 1812.
Calais - Saint Croix Island Historic Site, State Cinema, International Festival 1st week in August, Downeast Heritage Museum and Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge along the way to Calais on Rt. 1.
Lubec - West Quoddy Head Light, access by bridge to Campobello Island (the famous summer home of President FDR in Canada)
Pembroke - Reversing Falls picnic and walking trail to see the ocean flowing in two different directions.
Dennysville - Cobscook Bay State Park
Saint Stephen's New Brunswick, Canada, is also a short drive for those looking to add an international flair to their vacation. Passports are required for adults and birth certificates or passports for all children when travelling to and from Canada.
You are minutes from downtown Machias - the shiretown of Down East Maine. There are pool tables at the Thirsty Moose Cafe down town, a harbor cruise at the town landing and a community swimming pool at the University of Maine at Machias that is charged on a per diem basis for guests. Downtown you can participate in the local history by celebrating the annual Magaretta Days Festival June 8-11th which salutes Fort O'Brien and Burnham Tavern as the sites where the first naval battle of the American Revolution was planned, fought and won. Shopping, fine restaurants, cultural events (University of Maine at Machias, Washington Academy), a boat launch and the annual Wild Blueberry Festival (last weekend in August) and East Machias River Day & Fireworks (end of June) all contribute to make Down East Maine a special place.
There are also a number of beaches and lakes in the area including Roque Bluffs State Park (ocean and fresh water pond, grills, toilets, playground), Starboard and Jasper Beach (multi-colored smooth stone beach made of volcanic rock)as well as Gardiner Lake (4 minute drive from cottage), Hadley, Bog and Seven Mile Lakes. The Starboard Community Center puts on its annual Lobster Roll & Fish Chowder dinner at the end of July which is a popular event.
Further down Route 1 South you can golf at the Barren View Golf Course or drop by the fishing village of Jonesport (Lobster Boat Races in Moosabec Reach on July 4th), visit an old time movie theater in Milbridge, or shop for art and antiques in Cherryfield (Narraguagus Trading Company, Queen Anne's Place) If you continue on to Ellsworth (1 hour) you'll be able to enjoy a day of shopping, dining or touring at Lamoine State Park (55-acre recreation, fishing and picnicking area around Frenchman's Bay).
A half hour from downtown Ellsworth you will find Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park - a must see full day trip on your visit. You will be enchanted by the quaint and bustling town of Bar Harbor and will be in awe of the charm and majesty of Cadillac Mountain, the Carriage Trails, and Park Loop Road. This is God's Creation at its finest and one of the prettiest places in the entire United States.
There is something for everyone in Down East Maine. Some are drawn to the photography, hunting, fishing (the best small mouth Bass in the USA), sightseeing, bird watching (Bar Harbor and Down East run annual tours around Memorial Day), lighthouses, golfing (Barren View Rt 1 South and Great Cove G.C. on the back road to Roque Bluffs), hiking, boating, or the Autumn leaves. Others are interested in acquiring their own home or piece of land in this last undeveloped coastline in the USA.
We were drawn by the peacefulness, incredible natural beauty and chance to spend quality time with the people we love.
We invite you to be our guest and experience "The Way Life Ought To Be."

A very lovely and comfortable cottage. The landlord has taken excellent care to keep the property in good shape. We've had a wonderful time at the cottage and around Down East areas including the famous Lubec Lighthouse, Moosehorn Wildlife Refuge, Calais Heritage Museum and, of course, the Bold Coast Trails which provide the most spectacular coastal views any hiking trail can do. Thanks very much!
