Situated just three blocks above the town's main square, this gorgeous, light-filled colonial casa offers spectacular views of the city, lake, and mountains and is within walking distance of San Miguel's best artistic, cultural, historical, educational, entertainment, and recreational offerings: world-class galleries and museums, arts and language schools, parks and gardens, restaurants and shops, theaters and clubs, spas and gyms, and more.
Apart from its superb location, you will enjoy this home's old-world charm and modern conveniences. Designed to accommodate privacy when needed and entertaining when desired, the house is built on three levels with the finest materials, skillfully hand-crafted by local master artisans: mesquite woodwork, Talavera and Saltillo tiles, bronze hardware, wood-beamed and boveda ceilings. It is simply and tastefully appointed with comfortable furnishings and fine Mexican folk art.
The ground floor features a formal living room with fireplace, efficient but fully-equipped kitchen, and a separate dining area that opens into a lushly landscaped courtyard with sofa and breakfast table. Off of the courtyard are two darling bedrooms, each furnished with a twin-sized bed, writing desk and armoire. These two bedrooms share a lovely full bathroom that also serves as the guest bathroom. Also on the ground floor, at the back of the house, is the utility and laundry room that includes a fourth full bathroom.
From the courtyard, there are two staircases, one leading to a third bedroom with twin-sized bed and its own private bath, completely separate from the main house. The second staircase leads to a terrace furnished with two chaise lounges and a table that seats 6, and to the spacious master suite with king-sized bed, fireplace, its own sala and private bath. Above the master suite is a second terrace where you can enjoy additional outdoor living. The terraces are the perfect perch for sunbathing, stargazing, or just relaxing with your favoriite book and beverage and admiring the amazing views and sunsets.
The house sleeps up to 7 with a king-sized bed in the master suite, a twin-sized bed in each of the three guestrooms, and a full-sized convertible sofa-bed in the living room.
It is professionally managed by English-speaking staff and comes with daily housekeeping services. Enjoy your home away from home!

Charming Colonial Casa: Superb Location & Spectacular Views
Year Purchased: 1994
Why the Owner Chose Centro Historico
Of the inhabited places on the earth, San Miguel is one of the easiest on the eyes. There is a quality of light here that draws artists from all over the world. We chose our particular location in San Miguel because we wanted to be near the heart of the city in the beautiful, well preserved historic center, where it is illegal to build anything looking newer than 500 years old, and because of the spectacular views of the whole city and the valley below from two terraces, the master bedroom, and even the master bath!
The Unique Benefits at this House
We love that we can get around on foot 99% of the time; that we have the space to accommodate visiting family and friends and to entertain guests; that public transportation is accessible and inexpensive; that good food is plentiful; that there is no shortage of educational, cultural and recreational activities and events; that we have good neighbors; that we meet interesting people from all over the world; that the climate is good;; that we can feel safe and relaxed; that the community is kid-friendly; that we have some of the best views in town and have very few steps to climb to enjoy them.
Owner's Map of Centro Historico
Although residents of the San Francisco Bay Area since the 1960's in Henry's case and the 1970's in Gloria's, we did not cross paths until 1991, when by chance, we had each decided to take year-long sabbaticals to write and study in San Miguel. Not exactly love at first sight, but within two montsh of our first encounter, we were living together and engaged to be married! That year, we established many a great friendships and strong ties with the artist community and knew then that our life in San Miguel would continue past the end of our sabbaticals. In the summer of 1992 we got married in Berkeley, and toward the end of December 1993, we began our search for our dream retirement home in San Miguel. It was an intense search. We looked at about 30 or so homes within a week's time. On the verge of burn-out and just as we were about to give up, we happened upon this house and immediately fell in love. It seemed perfect in every respect: location, views, and size; architecture, design, and craftsmanship; furnishings and finishes -- wow! But just to be sure, we asked our real estate agent to get the sellers to let us stay in the house for 10 days so we could experience living in it. It far exceeded our expectations and by early January 1994 we were the proud new owners of Garita 8. We are delighted to be able to share it with you.

My family stayed here for spring break and it was such a charming house in a great central location. It had some beautiful architectural and artistic touches, but at the same time was spacious and had modern conveniences. Naturally my kids loved the wi-fi! Beautiful view.

I've rented a few houses in SMA and all have been exactly what I needed. This time I needed a house had more than two bedrooms, centrally located and spacious adult for my family to hang out in the evenings. Casa Bonita more than fit the bill! What you don't see in the pics is the maid who is delightful and genuinely warm and friendly. BTW: consider working out something [small extra charge] with her to prepare a meal or two, She is an excellent cook. Another hidden assest is the house manager, Evaristo, who is so helpful, willing to please and the perfect gentleman. The master bedroom is beautiful with amazing veiws from bed and terrace! Beds very comfortable and nice linen as well. The two smaller bedrooms on main level are very cozy and efficient, you'll look forward to retreating. This casa doesn't feel like a 'sterile' run-of-the mill rental but like you borrowed the keys to your relatives beautiful home.

Perfect house in a perfect location (for all ages)

We rented the house for a week with a few middle-aged friends (5 of us). The house was great, clean, well set-up and perfectly located (2 minutes to El Jardin), with breath taking views. The bedrooms had comfortable beds. The kitchen was well stocked, with dishes, glass wears, and all sorts of electronic equipments, Etc... No dishwasher, but the maid took care of that among other things, so it was not a problem at all. We enjoyed every part of the house, and to be able to do laundry the last day was perfect. Goodness! You’ve got to love the Mexican bathrooms!(they know how to do it). Overall it was very nice and I would highly recommend this house to anyone, whether you have a family, or come with a few friends. Mr Landlord (can't think of his name right now) was very helpful before going to San Miguel and gave me a few tips, and Evaristo (the property manager) called me several times to the US to ease my mind and tell me that everything would be ready for us, and it was! You can rent this house with confidence and will not be disappointed. Virginie
