Experience Merida on the mystical Yucatan Peninsula from the privacy of an historic home in the Centro. Just behind the massive wooden entry doors is a place of peace and simple luxury.

This privately owned townhouse is offered as a vacation rental to those seeking privacy, unstructured days and independent adventures in travel. This is not your typical Bed and Breakfast or hotel experience but offers guests an opportunity to immerse themselves into the local culture, color and richness of this undiscovered colonial Mexican city.

Casa Pocito is a restored colonial rowhouse with 18’ high ceilings, thick stone walls and cool tile floors. A Moroccan-inspired pool is the centerpiece of the rear patio. The middle courtyard allows light and air to filter into the interior spaces. Well-known local architect Salvador Reyes Rios originally restored this property in 2000. The current owners and Wisecracker, their design company recetly reinvented all of the interior and exterior spaces while respecting the original colonial charm. Systems were upgraded, exterior hardscapes were rethought to improve flow and be more functional. The lines between indoor and outdoors are blurred and become transparent thanks to the openness of the architecture.

They have coined the new name Casa Pocito Redux to define the totally re-imagined design. Many of the furnishings are custom and were designed especially for the house. Artwork, unique textile accents and accessories have been gathered from their travels around the globe. Chunky rustic antique pieces were discovered locally. Modern elements add another unexpected layer. The rooms painted in traditional mineral-based paints are of a palette inspired by nature; lush flora, stone and water. The sum of these elements is a soothing, uncluttered comfortable place that you may find difficult to leave.

Casa Pocito Redux includes plenty of room for entertaining or relaxing in the formal sala, a comedor that seats 8, a center courtyard with a sleek architectural infinity fountain and a sparkling new kitchen. The cocina has polished concrete counters, typical handmade pasta tile, modern stainless steel appliances and an antique armoire for additional storage. It is equipped with everything you’ll need to prepare meals at home if you wish.

There are two air-conditioned bedrooms, including one with an impressive painted 4 poster bed with antique gilt flourishes. The master bedroom overlooks the pool with its wrought iron canopy bed made by a local craftsman. Two modern bathrooms with step-in showers retain their original character with antique tiles. The bedrooms each contain one queen sized bed and have bathrooms adjacent to them. The bedroom suites are located at opposite ends of the house which provides great privacy when two couples are traveling together.

Antique stone walls surround the peaceful rear garden which blooms with bougainvillea, heliconia, palms and flowering banana trees. The centerpiece of this garden is a Moroccan style plunge pool lined with glass mosaic tiles and framed with native stone. The place to refresh, revive and relax.

Casa Pocito, like Merida itself, is a special small secret.

We are both experienced Mexico travelers and we have stayed at many haciendas, hotels, and private houses over the years. Casapocito ranks among our most favorite destinations in Mexico. It is perfectly located on a quiet street yet close to all of the great things to see and do in Merida. We have stayed there twice in the last two years and each time we walk through the front door we feel that we are very much at home. The layout of the house is perfect for us and a guest with two lovely bedrooms separated by the common areas of the house. Each bedroom also has its own sitting area--perfect for reading or quiet conversation. The decor is tasteful, relaxed, and without pretense. Every time we have a quiet moment to sit and look around, we are delighted by the thoughtul attention to detail and color everywhere we look. The interplay of turquoise and chartreuse in the dining room and inner courtyard is a particular favorite. The photos only give a hint of what it's really like to be in this gracious space. We particularly enjoy the plunge pool in tbe back patio, the perfect spot to refresh after a day of walking the streets of Merida on a warm day. The owners have made leasing Casapocito as easy as falling out of bed and their agents in Merida are perfectly bilingual, punctual, accommodating, and friendly. If you've not been to Merida, you owe it to yourself to discover this city. It is a surprisingly cosmopolitan place, a vibrant university town with museums (the anthropological museum is a favorite--great Mayan artifacts), grand architecture (the oldest cathedral on the American continent), a lively main plaza, wonderful restaurants, and lovely people. You could easily spend all of your time in town but then you would miss all of the nearby Mayan ruins, haciendas (the restaurant at Hacienda Xcanatun is excellent), cenotes, and miles of undeveloped beaches on the northern Yucatan coast. Merida is a gem of a city and, thankfully, it is still off the beaten tourist path. Casapocito is the perfect place to hang your hat while you explore this special part of Mexico.

All in all a fantastic vacation spot. I truly enjoyed relaxing over morning coffee before strolling to the main square in Merida for lunch or a little margarita! The location of this property means that you don't need a car as you can walk everywhere. There are restaurants and bars within easy reach and even a Wallmart if you're really forgot sunscreen! The house itself is beautifully decorated, very tasteful and the perfect escape. Take a good book and you can relax in a warm peaceful home.

Highly recommended. We stayed at Casa Pocito for a week in late February and loved it. Situated on a quiet block, this charming home is within steps of the Centro Historico's many shops, restaurants, and sights. The layout is spacious, open and inviting and the colorful and comfortable decor is, simply put, very well done. There were times I didn't want to leave the house and simply preferred to sit and read in one of the sitting rooms or by the pool in the courtyard. We would gladly return to Casa Pocito.

We really enjoyed our stay at Casa Posito. We'd just wander from room to room, living in our "picture book" house. We really enjoyed coffee out in the courtyard or by the pool, each morning. The "Colonial" atmosphere in the Casa was delightful as was the entire city.

Casa Pocito is a stunning oasis in the vibrant city of Merida. This beautiful home far exceeded our expectations and the photos do not do it justice. The property manager met us at the home right on time and gave us all the information needed to make our stay perfect. The home has been completely renovated yet maintains all the charm of a historical Merida home. The attention to detail is incredible. With 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, 2 living areas, central courtyard and serene pool area, it is the perfect location! After a wonderful day of wandering throughout Merida, Casa Pocito was truly a home away from home. Thank you to the owners for sharing this amazing home. I highly recommend Casa Pocito! We are already planning and looking forward to our next stay!

I had to write to tell you how much we enjoyed our stay at Casa Pocito. The location is perfect for seeing the sites in the center of the historic part of Merida but we always looked forward to getting back "home" to our quiet refuge. The design is simple and elegant, if feels like Mexico but without a bunch of knick knacks. We loved the openess of the architecture. Your property manager was great and helped us get settled. Starting to plan a return trip.

                          Year Purchased: 2004

About the owner: I visited the Yucatan in the late 1970s when I was still in college. The people, the pace and the beauty of Merida left a lasting impression. Although there have been many changes and growth especially in the north of the city since then, the place retains all of it's original charm. My partner and I purchased Casa Pocito in 2004 and use it as a getaway, when we are not in residence we receive guests. We redesigned the interiors and patio spaces and added the Moroccan plunge pool to enhance the property in 2010. We are the principals of an interior design business based in California but also have worked on several projects in Merida. The house has been featured in three books on interior design and was featured in Ambientes magazine. Casa Pocito is a wonderful jewel and we feel fortunate to be the current custodians of this antique property.

The Unique Benefits at this Townhome:
Living in a piece of colonial history, enjoying the unique architectural features, and savoring the peace and quiet that lie behind the massive entry doors. Merida's Historico Centro is a busy, busy place with lots of bus traffic (and noise). Casa Pocito enjoys an enviable location on a short street with no bus traffic. We encourage you to always ask about street traffic and noise when you are making your inquiries at the various properties in and around the center of Merida.
