Water Island is a tiny, exclusive community on Fire Island, a thirty-two mile-long barrier reef located five miles off the south shore of Long Island on the Atlantic Ocean. It is relatively isolated, the nearest neighboring communities being 1.5 miles east (Davis Park) and 2.5 miles west (Fire Island Pines). In between is all undeveloped National Seashore land.
The beach is never crowded and, in mid-week, you might even have it all to yourself. It is only reachable by ferry from Sayville, NY or by private boat. There are no stores. You either bring your supplies with you or, if you wish, you can have them delivered to the ferry by local Long Island merchants.
Personal shoppers are also available. There is no marina. Moorings only. No streets, no sidewalks, just wooden boardwalks winding through the town. This is definitely a place for those who want to kick back and enjoy Mother Nature at her best.
The house is located at water's edge on the bay side of the island (Water Island is about 600 feet from bay to ocean). There are two buildings. The main house contains three bedrooms (queen, double and twins). The main "great room" contains a chef's kitchen, a dining area with seating for eight, a living room area with antique cane and split reed furniture, and a big stone fireplace.
The main bath has an antique clawfoot tub for those who wish to soak away the cares of the day. There is also a reading/music room (a 1931 Wurlitzer miniature upright piano, ala Casablanca, honky-tonks in the corner). Even a guitar is available. The entire interior of the house is white horizontal wood- plank walls. This wonderful home is impeccably maintained.
The back house (400 sq. ft.) is connected to the main house by a private deck. It is the master bedroom and has its own bath. An outdoor shower with ten-inch showerhead is not far away. From your king-size platform bed, your wake-up call will be the songbirds outside the window. All the rooms in the house have ceiling fans.
The private deck between the two buildings has an antique iron dining set, deck chairs and a chaise or two. There is also a private sunning deck. At the end of the day, neighbors gather at our sunset bench on the bay for the ritual cocktails at sunset. Water Island is barefoot territory. Leave the skates and the bike at home, along with the tennis racket and the golf clubs. Just bring your toothbrush and a bathing suit and you'll be set for the summer.
