Virgin Gorda is one of nature's little secrets and the Boulder House and it's Cedar Guest House (see other listing) provide a haven for you to enjoy panoramic views in all directions. You will experience these commanding views from the three decks that surround the houses as well as from every room. Each room opens to the decks where you are immersed in lush tropical gardens and views overlooking the Caribbean Sea to the West, the Atlantic Ocean to the East and the surrounding Valley and Gorda Peak. Sailboats dot the horizon in spectacular panoramic views that will take your breath away. The decks are the perfect place to absorb one of the Caribbean's fabulous sunsets as the sun fades behind the mountains of the island-dotted Caribbean.
The house takes it's name from the large boulder around which the house is built. It features two bedrooms, one with a queen bed, and one with a full bed and a twin bed. Inside, full-length louvered windows on all exterior walls permit you to fully enjoy the ever-present tropical breezes. Common areas are a combined living and dining area, a full bath and a fully equipped kitchen. The cedar guest house has an additional three bedrooms and two bathrooms if you are traveling with a larger group. We provide gas grills for your barbecue needs. Enjoy preparing a meal at your leisure and dining on your own private deck overlooking the oceans.
We will arrange for our on-island manager to greet you at the airport or ferry dock upon your arrival. You will then be escorted to our property where you will be orientated to our villa. Six mornings a week, Shirley, our domestic assistant, will provide limited daily maid service.
The three-acre hilltop setting affords a unique measure of privacy and freedom, yet is only a few minutes from any of the island's best beaches, restaurants, and shops. The hill-top is within walking distance from Spanish Town and the Yacht Harbor however, WE OFFER FREE USE OF OUR VEHICLE which truly opens up the island for your personal enjoyment.
Virgin Gorda has a population of about 3500 and a total area of 21 square kilometers (about 7 miles). It is the second largest of the British Virgin Islands. The island is know for the beauty of its more than 15 white sand beaches - often framed by huge boulders; as well as for it's tranquil turquoise waters. Beaches are wonderfully serene and peaceful and we are happy to advise you how to access the best ones. With the exception of the famous Baths, beaches are rarely crowded. Virgin Gorda's climate is nearly perfect year round and rain is rare. Island locals are gentle and friendly people. The island's marvelous and secluded beaches are one of it's most treasured secrets. Bring your snorkel equipment and submerge yourself in the endless undersea delights that this island's oceans have to offer.
The Boulder House and our nearby Cedar House (see separate listing-VRBO#288911) are owned and operated by the Hunter family in a partnership called Hunter Homes, Ltd. The Hunter family has made Virgin Gorda a second home for more than three decades. We love to share our homes with both newcomers as well as our regular annual visitors. For this reason, we keep our rates quite modest. For this reason, and in fairness to our faithful returning guests, we cannot offer further "special deals". Our guests know we are...a special deal.
For additional information and many more photos, please visit our website link below. You may also check our website for additional openings and availability. If the Boulder House calendar looks full, please contact us anyway so we can put you on our waiting list or possibly place you in the Cedar House.
We look forward to sharing our island experience with you!

Boulder House it perched atop the hill overlooking Spanish Town. It is perfectly situated to see both sunrises to the East and sunsets to the West. We were actually in Virgin Gorda during the full moon (a blue moon in fact), and it was amazing to see the sun set and moon rise on opposite sides of the house at the same time. The house is well equipped with everything you would need for cooking meals in. We were also glad that there was a variety of kitchen staples in the house for use. There were spices, oils, butter, etc, which was convenient for us to be able to cook a meal without multiple trips to the grocery store (although there are three grocery stores within 3-4 minutes of the house). Having the truck included in the rental is a true bonus. No need to waste half a day setting up getting a rental car. When you arrive at the airport (or ferry dock) the truck is ready waiting for you. We ended up covering every inch of the roads on Virgin Gorda. We visited the copper mine at one end all the way to the Gun Creek ferry at the other. Our favorite snorkeling spot was at the far north east end of Long Bay. Unfortunately, there was not good visibility in the water due to a groundswell while we were there. The good thing is that the beaches were completely devoid of tourists. Staying on Virgin Gorda also allows you to visit the Baths early morning and/or late afternoon when where you can have the place to yourself. We went at 4 PM and were the only people there. The house comes with daily maid service, so when you come home from a long day at the beach, the beds are all made and there are clean towels awaiting you. We had a wonderful time staying at Boulder House and would definitely recommend it as a great option for anyone staying in Virgin Gorda.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, sightseeing, romantic getaway, adventure seekers, families with young children.

A Very Laid Back Honeymoon!

My husband and I stayed at the Boulder House for our honeymoon and couldn't have had a more relaxing time! The house is in a perfect spot to watch the activity from atop the hill, explore using the truck that comes with the rental, and interact with the ways of the locals. We were there in September, and when they say most of the island is closed, take it seriously! We wanted to have a couple fancy nights out and a couple casual nights out, and we ended up just doing a couple casual outings for dinner because most restaurants and resorts were closed for the month, or for a couple of weeks surrounding our early September trip. That just allowed us to relax more by getting groceries and cooking for ourselves as the sun set behind Tortola. The porch that wrapped around the Boulder House was the perfect spot to watch that sun set every night! Howard and Irma weren't on the island at the same time as us, so we had Patrick, who met us at the airport, showed us to our truck, and led us to the grocery store, and then to the Boulder House. That was all the introduction we needed because everything was very straight forward. While we were there, we visited both Tortola and Anegada. We loved Anegada, for we had the Loblolly Beach pretty much all to ourselves. We explored downtown Road Town, Tortola and we weren't all that impressed. We should have taken a taxi to a beach outside of town. Our favorite beaches on Virgin Gorda were Spring Bay Beach and the Baths, as well as Savannah Bay Beach. Every beach we went to, we had to ourselves for at least half the time we were there. That is owed to the fact that we were there in September. That's the upside of the trip during low season. The one thing I didn't expect when booking a house in the middle of the neighborhood was the sound of dogs and roosters at night and in the early hours of the morning. Luckily we were able to fall back asleep quickly. There are also roosters all over the island, so maybe you hear them no matter where you are! All in all, we had an amazing time and would highly recommend the Boulder House to anyone that wants to have a low key vacation in paradise!Recommended for: Tourists without a car, sightseeing, families with teenagers, age 55+, adventure seekers, families with young children.

Every moment was charmed during our one week stay at the Boulder House. Exquisitely private, this home has, without a doubt, the most beautiful view on the island. The House was clean, well-maintained, and more than met our expectations and exceeded the listing description. One of us travelling to the Carribean for more than 35 years described this location and home as the best ever experienced. One of us travelling to the Carribean for the first time does not want to stay any place else. This house, location, and owners/caretakers are nothing short of exceptional. So delightful and romantic was the location and the space so well-appointed that we cooked nearly every night at the house and ate on the deck. Because the house is at the top of a hill, we could hear joyous music, community gatherings and all island delights. In short, if you are seeking a romantic and/or family vacation that provides all the beauty of the Carribean and comfort of a home, this space is perfect.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, girls getaway.

We loved our visit to the Hunter Homes and the beautiful island of Virgin Gorda. You have thought of everything. We rented both the Cedar House and Boulder House for 10 of us and there was plenty of room. It was so convenient to have the two vehicles and two houses side-by-side. Howard met us at the ferry and things went very smoothly from there. Shirley was great and a good resource of information. The views were spectacular and the location was very convenient.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, sightseeing, families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway.
Owner response: We're so glad your family gathering at the Boulder and Cedar Houses was a success! It's always a gamble to rent two houses for 8 nights in a place you don't know, and we're pleased that you and your family were so happy with your visit to Virgin Gorda and to our homes. Comments like yours are important to us in measuring how we are doing in providing a memorable vacation for first-timers and and our returning guests. Thanks again for your visit! Steve

Hi Judy, We had an awesome time on Virgin Gorda. The house was perfect. Loved the deck and the views and the constant breeze. The island was such a treat - loved the Baths, Devils Bay, Spring Bay, Savannah beach. Went sailing with Double-D for a day which included snorkeling in 2 really cool spots and lunch at the Cooper Island Beach Club- loved it! Ate at the Mine Shaft and Flying Iguana Cafe-both really good. Also made to Anegada for a day which was a world unto itself. Would do it all over again tomorrow if we could. Thanks again and hope to return to the Hunter Homes again in the future. Karen & Kevin DavernDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We stayed in May 2007 and all we can say is WOW! what a beautiful island. The people are like the weather warm and inviting. The Beaches were among the most beautiful and amazing. We loved having them all to ourselves. We have traveled to many islands but we have never seen such an abundance of healthy coral reef just as you walk in to the warm waters. As for the home it was wonderful as well. Clean, warm and inviting with its beautiful trade winds. Shirleys daily visits were always a treat, either with fresh lime or tamarindos. She is a doll. We look forward to returning in a few months. Thank you for opening your lovely home to us.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

We stayed at the Boulder Home this past July '07 and throughtly enjoyed ourselves. The home is just what you see, on the hilltop, overlooking beautiful beaches. It made coming home in the evening something to look forward to. We debated between the beachfront residents, resorts and stuff but a "real" home is our style of traveling. It's what I always look for and the Hunter Home fits perfectly. The ocean breezes are so much better than a/c and on the top of the mountain, well, it doesn't get any "breezer!" We slept under the sheets on July. Every room in the house has an exterior door, nice. Proches, bbq pit, sun sets and sunrises, phones (our cell even worked), transportation, it was all waiting for us. Pick-up and drop-off went just like we wanted. As far as "stuff," everything was there. Just bring some shorts! Now all this said about the Hunter houses, remember where it's at! Virgin Gorda is about as beautiful an island as there is. Uncrowded beaches, literally often had them to ourselves, the boulders, snorkeling, friendly people and good food. And that little truck took us on every road on the island. I look forward to returning to Virgin Gorda and wouldn't hesitate to stay with the Hunter's again. We stayed 9 days and recommend a 2 week stay, minimum! I like nothing more than to get about a dozen of us and rent both homes next summer. Thanks for a memorable family vacation.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

Last week had to be the most fantastic vacation I've ever had! We stayed for a week at the Boulder house, on Virgin Gorda and absolutely loved it! The views were so beautiful and we enjoyed being on the hilltop, with lots of privacy, versus a resort! We loved having no agenda, but did alot of wonderful snorkeling and exploring the beaches....Some of our snorkeling adventures included squid, barracuda, parrot fish and many other colorful fish. It was great to have access to the truck. The restaurants were great and we thoroughly enjoyed cooking out on the grill too....Shirley was great and was extra special to me on my birthday! We are already talking about going back next year.....We love it there! Kathy & Brian....Raleigh, NCDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

Year Purchased: 1970
About the owner: Hunter Homes Ltd. had its beginnings in 1970 before paved roads and electricity came to Virgin Gorda. Our father/grandfather, David Hunter, purchased our three-acre hilltop and began construction of the Cedar House as his dream retirement home. Construction of the Boulder House followed in 1982, and in 1992, ownership of the houses, and the rental business, passed to his four children. We, his children and grandchildren, have maintained and managed the property ever since and love sharing our second home with others. When you contact us, you are dealing with Us, the owners, not a rental corporation dealing with many properties. We will take the time to answer your questions and be sure we are meeting your vacation needs and expectations. We hope to hear from you.
