Hayes Pub, tucked into a hill with the rest of the village, offers outdoor tables and chairs from which you look down at the harbor while sipping a most glorious pint of Guinness, a must while the afternoon drifts into evening. Drombeg circle, an incredible remain from the Bronze Age, is a national monument and literally a two minute drive from the house on the way to Glandore. Kinsale is 40 minutes to the west and Killarney 2 hours to the northeast ( A bird could do it in 30 minutes but winding roads is the price you pay for dramatic landscapes on breathtaking peninsulas like Beara and Dingle). The local pitch and putt course on the Warren (our 5 star blue beach) in Rosscarbery is a par 3 course which affords an incredible view of the sea while you fine tune your short game. Clonakilty, a twenty minute drive on the N71 heading east, offers a sensational live music venue at DeBara's Pub. The single lane, hair-raising bridge you cross to get into Union Hall was featured in the classic Irish film, War of the Buttons. Year Purchased: 2001
About the owner: While Sile and I call Brooklyn our primary residence, Sile was born and raised in County Wicklow, Ireland. Numerous trips 'home' demanded we find a 'derelict cottage' for ourselves near the family. The 'Tiger' arrived and prices skyrocketed around Dublin and into Co. Wicklow . Dejected, we went to visit friends in West Cork for a weekend.
Why the Owner Chose Rosscarbery: A Saturday morning drive brought us to the site on which Derry sits today. Needless to say we impulsively purchased the land the day after we saw it in 1998. By 2001 the house, designed by my brother who is a builder here in the states, was constructed but unfinished. In the summer of 2001 my two brothers and brother-in-law, and his brother all arrived with partners and family to partake in an Amish-like-construction, communal, work/vacation holiday. It was hugely successful as wide pitch pine boards were layed, doors hung, trim ('architrive') applied, garage deck constructed, and a kitchen installed.
The Unique Benefits at this House: The kitchen cabinets were designed and constructed by my brother in Connecticut and imported in a container to the site. We think the kitchen is the finest feature of the house while the wood flooring, with its wide, pitch-pine boards from Honduras, is a close second. The plan is open which allows plentiful light to fill the house. We hope you appreciate the finishing details which reflect the craftmanship my brothers and extended crew brought to the job. I will be forever grateful for their contribution.
