A Quiet Retreat

Guest: Silverplate (Atascadero CA)
Date of Stay: 03/08/12 Review Submitted: 03/27/12

This quaint 100-year old plantation cottage was a wonderful find! The quiet, end-of-the-road location is in the hills, which meant rain and beautiful rainbows. The cottage was just as described in all respects and felt very cozy during the recent devastating winds and rains on Kauai. It was clean and well-stocked and the washer/dryer were perfect. The owners were available if needed but did not intrude. We found the location to be perfect to travel to either side of the island. We would recommend this lovely cottage to anyone wanting a real Hawaiian experience. The cottage is nestled up to forest land and feels very remote, but it is only a 10-minute drive to the Kalaheo Cafe, a great place to eat!

Owner response:Thank you so much for this lovely review. It certainly was our pleasure to have you staying with us. We hope to see you on your next visit to Kauai. In the meantime, please give our best to your beautiful area, we are both natives of the Golden State and we love California! Mahalo Nui Loa and much Aloha to you both.

Thank you for the wonderful week we had the pleasure to spend in your lovely cottage. We found everything as expected and you both were most helpful in all our little needs. This is a beautiful Island, deserving of it's name of "Garden Island." We hope to come again for a visit. Aloha and again Mahalo!

Thank you so much for making our last few days on the island together perfect. We loved the cottage, and felt very at home here -- it was hard to tear myself away from the porch! We're both hoping to meet back up here in Kauai, and we'd love to come back to your cottage! It was great to meet you both! Mahalos.

Better than we expected!

Guest: Charles & Louis
Date of Stay: 01/14/12 Review Submitted: 01/28/12

We expected the cottage to be nice, but it surpassed our expectations -- photos can never capture the feeling of being in a place. We knew you would be there if we needed you, but it actually felt like our own place for the week. It was a perfect spot from which to explore the entire island -- twice to Waimea Canyon & Kalalau Lookout, twice to North Shore, twice to Polihale! We'll certainly recommend this place to our friends and hope to come back some day.

We had a great time at the Kauai Cottage! Great location, only about 10 minutes to Poipu. Front deck was a great spot to get a little base tan in the mornings. We got lucky with great weather for the whole week! We'll definitely be back to your beautiful Island and Cottage. Mahalo.

Awesome little cottage!

Guest: Chip (Denver CO)
Date of Stay: 12/31/11 Review Submitted: 01/09/12

Great little place, in Kalaheo up the hill 5 minutes from Highway 50. About 20 minutes from Poipu, 30 from Lihue, maybe 35 to Waimea. Nice comfy bed, nice deck to get morning sun to start that base tan. Alison and Jim were great hosts. We didn't get to see them much, due to family commitments down in Poipu, but hope to stay there again soon!

Owner response:It was such a pleasure to meet you both. So happy to know that you enjoyed your stay, and thanks for bringing us the great weather when you came! Glad to hear that the family so enjoyed being together on Kauai -- it certainly is the place for that! Happy 2012 to you and we look forward to seeing you again on the beautiful Garden Island!! PS. Mahalos for all the goodies you left us too. :)

Cozy and delightful Hideaway!

Guest: Diana & Marty
Date of Stay: 11/14/11 Review Submitted: 01/28/12

Thanks so much for providing us a cozy and delightful hideaway. As others have said here, it makes all the day's adventures complete to have a welcoming base to return to each night. We owe you a washcloth, due to underestimating the power of the "red dirt" the first time! Please pass on our thanks to your neighbor for sharing his lovely tangerines and spirit of Aloha too. Mahalos!

quiet and cool

Guest: BC (Vancouver, BC)
Date of Stay: 10/15/11 Review Submitted: 11/04/11

We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Kauai but were disappointed with this cottage. On the plus side, it is quiet and cool, and has good internet access and lots of beach towels. We didn't mind the 20 minute drive to beaches or the fact that it has no view. However, it is small and needs maintenance and a thorough cleaning (especially for mildew control). It is basic accommodation, not a place we wanted to spend time in.

Owner response:We are very sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the Cottage. We are really surprised to see this review as our guests never mentioned while they were staying with us that they were unhappy in any way. We leave a Welcome letter for our guests when they arrive with House Rules, etc. The very first sentence of this welcome letter is "Everything should be in order for your stay with us. If anything needs attention, please let us know immediately so that we may take care of it." We would beg to differ about no view, as there is a distant ocean view from the front lanai. As far as maintenance goes, we just completed our annual fall scheduled maintenance which includes painting, new linens and pillows, placemats, etc. We do this once a year on a regular basis. We welcome our guests comments, and once again, we sincerely wish that these guests had communicated with us while they were on property so we could have tried to make their visit perfect.

Best Vacation Ever

Guest: Love Kauai (New Jersey)
Date of Stay: 06/06/11 Review Submitted: 06/21/11

We love Kauai and we LOVE the Kauai Cottage !!! After spending a week on Maui at a condo we were fortunate to spend our second week at the Kauai Cottage. It was so peaceful and relaxing compared to the condo. Its a seperate cottage on the property and completely private. We hiked to Lake Alexander right from the cottage on a trail a block away. It was magnificent the trail went thru a beautiful rainforest and ended up at the top of a mountain in Kalaheo overlooking the whole Island. We highly recommend staying here when you come to Kauai. Peaceful Cottage --- We loved our stay

Guest: Linda & Grant
Date of Stay: 05/17/11 Review Submitted: 01/28/12

We have enjoyed our time here at your peaceful cottage. The grounds are lovely and the extras in the cottage made our stay very comfortable. We left Kalaheo each day to explore. These were the experiences we really liked: Snorkeling at Poipu Beach. It always seemed to be sunny. $9.00 golf at Kukuiolono Park - what a beautiful place. Running/Walking trail along the ocean in Kapa'a River kayaking and hiking to a waterfall along the Wailua River Hiking the Waimea Canyon We will be back!

Thank you so much for providing your cozy "Kauai Cottage" and all the extras (chairs, mats, towels) for the beach. Your advice and recommendations were great -- we loved Pomodoro Restaurant! We really enjoyed exploring the beaches and shoreline alll along the south coast. We are heading to the north shore and are hoping that the visibility will improve -- we still hope to see Waimea Canyon. Kauai is a beautiful island and we are thoroughly enjoying our stay!!

This was our second stay at the Kauai Cottage and it was even better this time. The location is very private and quiet. We love the birds singing in the morning and the stars at night. We already booked for next year.

Inexpensive stay

Guest: Romantic couple (Santa Rosa, CA)
Date of Stay: 03/28/11 Review Submitted: 04/29/11

This is a beautiful island! Wonderful sounds, sights and smells. However, this cottage does not have an ocean view and judging by the size of the hedge surrounding the property hasn't had one for a long time. It is very private, ok kitchen and it was nice having the use of a washer and dryer. The drive up the hill is long and you're isolated enough from everything that it meant we usually left early in the morning and stayed out until evening. That worked but this was not a place we wanted to spend a lot of time in; that was disappointing. The photo is somewhat misleading. The stars were great but that is the only view.

Owner response:We are very sorry to hear that you were disappointed in any way with the Kauai Cottage. We have never had a negative review of our property and it is very important to us that each of our guests has a good experience. It seems like your biggest concern was the view. It says on our page that there is a "distant ocean view" and we are located on the top of a hill "Hilltop Cottage" -- so most guests understand that you won't have a white water view. As far as the hedge on the property is concerned, we planted the hedge for privacy and this is one of the features of our property which most of our guests are looking for --- something off the beaten path and very private and quiet. The thing that confuses us the most though is this. When you checked out of the Cottage, you left the following message in our Guest Book (and this is quoted verbatim:) Thanks so much for the use of your Cottage. Great sounds, cute goats, lovely having access to a cooler, beach mats and towels and your Kauai guide book!! Loved eating at Roy's, Pomodoro & Kalaheo Cafe. Did a great tour of NaPali Coast , kayaked the Wailua river and saw the waterfall, Waimea Canyon hikes and beaches, beaches, beaches! Go hear Kirby at Joe's On The Green in Poipu!! Doris & Jesse We were surprised then when you posted this review approximately one month after your departure. The first paragraph of our welcome letter, which we have personalized for each of our guests, asks to please let us know if anything is not in order when you check in. We never heard anything from you when you were here that would indicate that you were displeased. We sincerely hope that you enjoyed your visit to our beautiful Island and send you aloha from Kauai.

Off the beaten path

Guest: In need of Sun (Seattle)
Date of Stay: 02/01/08 Review Submitted: 03/04/08

We spent a week at the Kauai Cottage and wished we could have stayed longer! It is a little "out of the way", but that's the way we like our vacations. We loved being able to save a few bucks by eating breakfast at home, having a fridge to keep snacks in, and even relax at home for an evening (much easier on the budget than constantly eating out). The view is beautiful and there's a nice deck to enjoy your morning coffee from. And...the bed!!! I slept better than I do at home! The owner is helpful and attentive but stays out of the way unless you ask for assistance! I recommend this place very highly if you're trying to enjoy Kauai away from the resorts!!

Owner response:Thank for your review, we are so happy you enjoyed your stay with us! We love to share our little piece of Paradise with our guests and we look forward to seeing you again. Mahalo nui loa and aloha till we meet again . . .

We have met some terrific people, had alot of laughs, seen amazing sights all over the island even caught up on our rest! I write this with a note of sadness because I don't want to leave. The island of Kauai is everything I heard about and so much more! We had a wonderful time in this lovely cottage. Thank you Alison & Jim for the experience and the lovely touches of the candies by the bedside, the flowers and cookies. In our 10 days here this place has become home.
