I just wanted to say thanks for allowing us to stay in your vacation home last week. We really enjoyed our time there. I was in dire need of some R & R, and that is exactly what I got. It was a unique experience, and that made it particularly special. Even though the weather wasn't perfect, everyone had a good time. My sister and I, intent on getting at least ONE more day out on the beach, braved a sort of "sand storm" there one particularly windy day. We got a good laugh out of comparing ourselves to being in the midst of a Siberian desert storm, while our sandals literally began to get covered up with sand. The horses were smart, and apparently took shelter somewhere on the other side of the island where they didn't have to fight head winds. We managed to laugh about the less then perfect weather, because everything else was so pleasant. We weren't quite sure about the linens, so I had everyone strip their beds, and I think most of us put ours in the laundry room. I believe we left everything in good order. Unfortunately, we didn't get to eat any of the crabs, but we did check the crab cages. We decided to let go what we could, but in some cases, the crabs clinged inside the cage. They had food inside, so they should survive for a pretty good while, in case you want to mention it to the next renters. Thanks for offering them to us, though. I got some great pictures of the horses and such, and my friend and I walked to False Cape State Park one day, which was really beautiful and pristine. Almost totally untouched. All in all, we had a really wonderful time. Thanks again for allowing us to rent your home. I hope we can come back sometime! Susan

Remember me

Guest: Cheryl (Columbus, NC)
Date of Stay: 09/18/10 Review Submitted: 10/10/10

In so many ways I had forgotten who I was. I sorely needed a place that would help me escape the drudery of the routine that consumed 18 of every 24 hours of my days. No incessant phone calls, no being constantly needed. I chose the Tern & Stumble Inn for its remote location and natural beauty, hoping it would be everything the owner decribed. It was so much more. If you need a place to refresh your soul, this is it. It is casual, comfortable, secluded and quiet. The sunrises, sunsets and moonrises were breathtaking. The wild horses were amazing. I had the rare opportunity to see two young mustangs romping in the surf just before sunrise. Under a watercolor sky, just them and me, not another soul on the beach during our mid-September stay. The owners were very helpful in answering questions and the house lacked nothing. I now remember who I am and I hope the Tern & Stumble Inn remembers me because I left a piece of my heart there, hopefully to be reclaimed another day, another time.

Great Stay at Carova Beach

Thank you for the great rental. Everything was great and our girls really enjoyed the visits from the wild horses. The information that you provided prior to our trip was done very nicely and was of great help. The house had plenty of room for the 10 guests that came with us and the kitchen was great. Thanks again.

Great Family Week at OBX

Guest: Sue & Tom (Dayton, Ohio)
Date of Stay: 06/19/10 Review Submitted: 07/22/10

Our week at the house was a great experience. Everything about the house was exactly as advertised. The house was clean and everything was in good working order. The owner was very helpful, providing advice for enjoying our stay and driving on the beach since this was our first trip to the Outer Banks, and the 4 wheel area is a unique place. All total, there were four families there for the week and the house provided all the room and comfort we needed. We spent evenings on the upper deck watching the wild horses and the foxes on the dunes. We learned it would be helpful to have a beach umbrella or a pop-up shelter to take to the beach for a break from the sun. I also learned that a 63-year-old grandfather should not try skimboarding without kneepads and a helmet. We would recommend the house to anyone wanting a restful week at the beach.

We had a wonderful time swimming at the beautiful beach and in the pool and hot tub. The rooms were very clean and nice. Brenda was very accomadating, when there was problems with the internet I called her and she helped me fix the problems. There is a very nice kitchen that we were able to cook just about everything, including amazing seafood! Thanks so much for the amazing time and fun memories!!

Wow what a great place for a family vacation. We had a total of 19 people with 7 children under the age of 5 For as big as our family is we were always occupied with the horses, playing at the beach and early walks on the beach looking for shells. We found many sand dollars. It was great weather except for our last 2 days we had rain. The location of your home is perfect for privacy and the short walk to and from the beach helped to tucker out all our little ones. We definately look forward to coming back.

This has been the best vacations ever. My husband has never relaxed in all the years we have been vacationing. We are in our mid 30's he is a workaholic always work on the mind and this has been the 1st time ever that he is not ready to go home and would like to stay longer. This will definately be our vacation spot from here out. Maybe even find land of our own to buy down the road. You can't even try to explain this place to friends and family enough it is something you just have to experience once yourself and you will be hooked. Thank you for opening your home for our family

Definately coming in 2010. Be careful we almost got fined because a horse came up too us and let us pet him. We were standing on the beach and a horse charged right before me and then the horses ( two stallions) go on their back legs and fought over the female.... pretty cool...!!! wanted to stay forever. Love it here

Wonderful experience and the house is just as advertised. We had horses in the carport, crabs in the pot and fish on the grill. Not only is the house a great place to stay it is very functional with privacy for each couple and great areas to be together for meals and play. Everyone we met was so polite and friendly we felt right at home the whole time. As first time visitors to the OB we were impressed by the absence of "tourist trap" type enterprises. Food, clothes, fishing equipment and souvenirs were all reasonably priced. I brought a new fishing rod with me that I got on sale and found the same one in the local bate shop at $2 less regular price. The prices and quality at the local Food Lion are as good as any I have seen.

The Tern & Stumble Inn treated us magnificently as we sped a week basking in the sun, playing foosball, boogie boarding, drinking heavily and feastiing on marvelous banquets. Our nights were robust and full of singing, dancing, and good drink. Laura's beautiful bouncing baby boy Logan enjoyed his time here as well. He spent his time laughing and eating delicious hammies. We also had a birthday girl, as Allie turned 21. In closing, we could not have asked for a more beautiful and accomodating location with a fantastic view of the water and a magnificent pool. Thank you for letting us into your gorgeous and comfortable home.

Ah.... writing this means that the trip is coming to a close. This house served as a meeting point for families distant from each other but always present in thought. A weeks summary... from the beginning.... Andy was served a BIG piece of "HUMBLE PIE" when he found himself sunk to his frame of the truck who on the top of the ramp at mile post 22. As always, people who live in NC and people who visit OBX seem ready to lend a hand. Fishing, relaxing and wandering up and down the beach at night, left nobody laying awake at night. Things that I have learned ... put your tire pressure down to 20PSI, high tide comes in quick and leaves just as fast, night fishing is good for baby sharks, don't touch the tail of a skate with your bare hand, 8 oz. weights are hard to throw, and some times spiders handg out in the noodle. Enjoyed. Thanks

We do love the house, it is amazing and we got to see the horses when we drove in last night! Today is Friday and we don't want to leave - yes, we learned what puddles are but we have all had the best time. The weather has been great and the water is so much fun. We hardly use the pool at all. All of the kids are tanned and swim like little fishes. This may be our 1st family vacation together, but it won't be our last one. We had the pleasure of a visit from 5 of the horses right in our front yard last evening. I think they came to be with us and personally say goodbye. All in all it has been a vacation we won't soon forget.

The OBX families from TN, NY & FL converged on the Tern & Stumble Inn for our very 1st effort on the 4WD area of Corolla Beach. Though forwarned about tire pressure, some of us still tried to venture onto the beach w/o lowering the PSI to less than 20 a pair of PA cops pulled us out and escorted the ignorant souls to the house (later another vehicle became stuck in the dune xing at the 22 mi. post and a local contractor counseled us to bring the PSI down to 12 and it worked too!!) The sunrises were beautiful the sunsets even better and never any rainstorms or showers just some distant lighteining in VA so no problem with oft mentioned puddles! Horses in the yard one day and we were lucky to see them on 4 of the days here. We saw all of the options and I think we used every one of them. The foosball table, the pool & hottub, billiards, the games TV & the wine glasses were used often!! The blender got a workout and with a crew of 13 we were glad to have so many bathrooms. 2 frigs & 2 dishwashers. No one was ever bored! These were the finest accomodations and most interesting vacation ever.

We could not have asked for a more beautiful vacation. The weather was perfect, the house was great, the horses were like pets in the yard. This was Wesleys and Sarah's first trip to the shore. We all found the puddles to be fun. All 13 of us had a wonderful time... from the beach to the pool,to the hot tub and just hanging out on the deck or playing in the game room. One week is not enough time. Thank you for sharing your home!!

Oh how e enjoyed our stay, once again!! Your home away from home is so lovely and inviting. The weather was mostly cloudy and a little rainy but it did not matter. We were visited by many horses, birds and frogs. Tonight we went over to the local fire company for their Oyster Fry. The food, company and atmosphere was wonderful! What a wonderful place to be - on the Outer Banks - with those you love, by the sea, we forget to count the days.

We are preparing to leave in the morning, My daughter organized this trip - so my husband and I are here with our children & their significant others and friends. What was to be a nine hour drive turned into a 12 hour drive so we were all tired when we had to travel the sand & puddles to get here. The beauty of the surroundings & the welcome feeling of the house made it all worth while. We've had a great time and lots of laughs. This was my first trip to the ocean & I now understand why it's so peaceful & calming. I hope to return someday & I hope you are able to spend many happy years here with your family.

Wow - what a vacation! First few days were glorious, then had to leave because Hurricane Isabel was comig through. However most of us returned on Sat. afternoon Thanks goodness the Tern and Stumble Inn suffered no damage. We were without electricity until Tuesday around 5pm but luckily our son in law brought his generator. We became very use to cold showers. Even without power we had a great time. The house is great and the grandkids so enjoyed their very own TV room on the 2nd floor! Gave them a chance to be away from all the adults and gave the adults a chance to have some"adult" time. The sunrises have been beautiful expecially today as we begin our last day here :(. Thank you for our extended stay since we had to evacuate the first week, we really appreciated you doing this for us. The Tern & Stumble Inn is truly a great house. We've seen lots of horses and frogs. Must admit the frogs creeped me out just a bit, but I'm finally getting used to them (I'm afraid of most anything that moves!) Again we all thank you for a great vacation.

It was all well worth the trip: The Tern and Stumble Inn is a beautiful house in a beautiful corner of the world. I could take a trip like this one every year, we may just have to find another family who is unsuspecting of my ideas of adventure. You can always tell a good vacation when your already looking forward to next time before you have left this time, and that what makes this time so special and memorable.
