Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Our family business is developing residential homes we design and construct ourselves. The homes are available for short-or-long-term rental and for sale. Since expanding the vacation rental side of the business, we now offer guest recommendations and booking services for other property owners. We love what we do and think of the process as a multi-media art project, on a BIG canvas! It is a lot of hard work, but also a creative and satisfying career. It is fun when we get to meet the travelers we host and always interesting to hear where they like to travel and why. Their comments are appreciated and help us build a travelog of places to go and things to do.

The seven-acre Caspar Coast House property was purchased in 1996. The home was designed specifically for the east side of the property, a 1-1/4 acre lot. It was designed with a guest's comfort and privacy in mind. Construction began in 1999, and was mostly completed by July of 2005, when we added Caspar Coast House to the vrbo listings and first welcomed our extended family for visits to help build word-of-mouth advertising.

The "art project" continues today and we're very happy so many folks return to Caspar Coast House to see the progress and renew friendships. The Mendocino coast is a wonderful place to visit.

Why the Owner Chose Caspar

When looking for property to build a new home we considered the north coast to be the perfect place. Mendocino County was already home and everything we wanted in a place to live: Natural beauty, ocean views and wildlife, quality restaurants, boutique shopping, and cultural activities. There much to enjoy on the north coast, including many parks and trails to explore. Caspar Coast House is located between two thriving towns, each with their own unique personality and a variety of entertainment opportunities to choose from. The tiny community of Caspar has much more to offer than meets the eye. Caspar Inn & the Caspar Community Center offer live music, organic food and festivals. Cottage-crafts persons and many talented artists, all working in a multitude of mediums, create wonderful products to shop locally for. The mild climate produces abundant varieties of flora and fauna and many lovely gardens. Tour the Mendocino Botanical Garden,"47-acres to the sea." There's a lot of locally grown organic fresh food and many fine-quality restaurant options for every taste and budget.

The Unique Benefits of this House

The views from Caspar Coast House are constantly changing. The light, color and textures of the ocean, sky, forests and meadows always provides something wonderful to see. The "nature channel" is on all the time. It's a place to observe nature and the natural cycles. Peaceful and rural here, there's much to appreciate and enjoy. Staying in, or going out, either is easy to do at Caspar Coast House. There are many areas around the house and gardens to comfortably relax, and enjoy the views.

Add to the retreat experience by using the on-site massage studio, hot-tub and steam-saunas. It's as if you have your own exclusive day-spa to use anytime. Rest and restore in private, without having to drive somewhere else to share services with the general public. Everything at your leisure, for a fraction of the cost. On-site organic gardens offer fresh food and flowers most of the year.

and always able to return to the patio views of the ocean. Our time at Caspar Coast House was relaxing & restorative to a spirit trapped inland far too long. Hope to return and will be sharing photos & stories with fellow land-locked spirits. Many thanks to Birdie and Howie...you bring joy to the experience.

Ideal Weekend

Guest: sunny (sf)
Date of Stay: 02/04/11 Review Submitted: 02/16/11

My girlfriend and I stayed here on a weekend getaway from SF and were delighted. It's everything you need and believe me, the photos are modest. The accommodations are luxury although the attitude is down to earth and extremely hospitable. Wonderful heated stone floors, very clean well appointed dwelling, quite exceptional art and touches throught, and of course the hot tub, the bikes, the steam shower, some very nice touches. Most impressive though is the location. Set right next to the woods, with miles of trails right next door, yet still just across the street from the beaches. Will be back with my family for more.

Owner response:Thank you for taking the time to write a review and we are very happy you enjoyed your visit to Caspar Coast House! It was fun hosting you and you are welcome back anytime!

Great place, but not walking distance to beach

Guest: Dave (Seattle, WA)
Date of Stay: 07/28/10 Review Submitted: 08/23/10

This is a great house and we really enjoyed our visit. Plenty of room with a large open dining room and living room, and the master bedroom is basically a suite with it's own space for a whole family. There is grass and a patio w/ basketball hoop for kids. The place is very nicely decorated. The one disappointment was that the ad says it is less than a half mile walk to the beach, but this is incorrect. At best the distance is .7 miles, part of which is spent on a sidewalk-less Highway 1 - not a bad drive at all, but not a reasonable walk at all either.

Owner response:Thank you, for your kind comments and for visiting us at Caspar Coast House. Regarding the walk to the beach, I fear you never found the trail, as one does not, nor do we recommend, walking along hywy #1 to reach the beach. The trail is at the south end of Caspar headlands, about a half mile walk from Caspar Coast House. One does have to cross the intersection at hywy 1 and Fern Creek Road, to get ino Caspar town proper, but as it is a daily walk for many in our sub-divsion, quite do-able. We do tell folks if they have small children that it may be better to drive to Caspar Beach, because it has the easiest access. Children usually have a lot of play equipment to take with them, so it is easier to get them there and back by driving rather than walking with them and their toys. From the vacation rental to Caspar headlands it is .5 of a mile marked by odometer. Once one is at the headlands, the walk continues either south to Caspar beach, or North to Jughandle beach, the distance increases slightly from there depending on which beach one chooses. Both beaches are wonderful for day-trips. Jughandle headlands has great trails and more expansive views than Caspar, but Caspar is closer and occasionally has surfers to watch. If one is an avid walker, or likes to bicycle, they will really enjoy the location of Caspar Coast House, and its easy access to extensive nature trails at Jughandle, Caspar, and in Jackson State Forest.

Outstanding Family Vacation Home

Guest: Gloria (Citrus Heights, CA)
Date of Stay: 07/08/10 Review Submitted: 07/18/10

We spent 3 nights in July in this fabulous home. Our 4 grandchildren (2-10 years of age) absolutely loved it. Three had Razor scooters and enjoyed circling the house, large driveway and basketball court. They brought bats, gloves and balls and played in the large yards (over an acre). The owners were helpful and offered to loan us bikes for the nearby trails. The home could not have been more accommodating. We especially enjoyed the large common rooms, huge display of local art, and the ability to enjoy music indoors and out. The 5 adults enjoyed the hot tub and coffee in the green house. On Sunday we had brunch for 15 people so the double sinks, many cooking utencils, and 2 dishwashers were greatly appreciated. The home is centrally located near beaches in Caspar, Mendocino and Fort Bragg. We are already looking forward to going again.

Girlfriend Getaway

Guest: 45ukiahgal (Ukiah, CA)
Date of Stay: 10/23/09 Review Submitted: 06/26/10

Went with a group of my friends last October and we had a blast. The house is exactly as it is described and the owners were really easy to work with. The family room is very amenable to lazing about but most nights we ended up hanging around the gorgeous kitchen that comes with all the amenities including a comfy sofa! Caspar beach is the closest beach and it couldn't be more beautiful. The entire Mendo/Fort Bragg area has plenty of things to do for young and old alike and to be able to stay somewhere as lovely as this made for a perfect vacation. Will def. do this again when family comes to visit. I live in the inland area of Mendocino County and go to the coast at least 2 times a month. The autumn is a really great time to be on the coast, fog wise - not too cold and it's never really, really hot like it is in the inland grape growing region. There is a big hot tub on the property and we used it two of the nights we were there and the immediate area near the house has a lovely walk through the forest on a small, paved road. The only sounds we heard was the wind through the trees. Very relaxing. Can't recommend this property enough. The house is comfy, spacious, and totally gorgeous.

Beyond Expectations!

Guest: Karen, Fran and Dodger (San Rafael, CA)
Date of Stay: 03/20/10 Review Submitted: 03/30/10

What a fabulous home and a perfect location almost directly between Fort Bragg and Mendocino, making travel to either very easy. If anything, the pictures don't do the house justice! It has even more than shown, like a huge flat screen t.v. for your dvd viewing pleasure and we just loved listening to music on all the speakers in any and/or every room including outside while sipping a cocktail on the patio. You even have a couch in the kitchen for people to hang out while you are cooking which is brilliant because where do most people congregate anyway?! It was only my friend and I with my dog, Dodger, but even he had the time of his life exploring the huge house and yard. We saw wild turkeys each morning just grazing and nearby, deer, goats, ducks and geese. So, not only did this house have everything you could possibly imagine, it was priced reasonably, two things hard to find. Last, but definitely not least, the owners, Howie and Birdie, couldn't have been more kind and helpful during any aspect of this rental from start to finish. Highly recommended and can't wait to return.

What a great home! The house is HUGE and had plenty of room for the 2 of us plus our friends with a teenager and newborn. You will find many comforts of home as well as the special touches you wish you had at home, such as radiant floor heating, surround sound speakers throughout the house, 2 dishwashers (very handy when eating in), sunfilled interiors, outdoor speakers, basketball court, deer in the backyard, etc.... We will definitely return!
