L'Ancienne Poste - perfectly located, airy interiors and great views
Location: Menerbes, Luberon Area, Provence, France, Europe (35 minutes to Avignon)
Accommodations: House, 5 Bedrooms + Attached Unit, 4 Baths (Sleeps 10-12)
Keywords: House
L’Ancienne Poste is a luxury village rental property in the heart of Ménerbes, a peaceful village in the beautiful Luberon region of Provence. See us featured on a French architecture TV show on youtube (search on Ancienne Poste Menerbes).
Featured in Homes & Gardens UK, various other design magazines and on a French architecture TV programme (search for Ancienne Poste Menerbes on YouTube), the property was designed by the owners and one of France's leading contemporary architects. The house is a former post office. It has now been elegantly restored and stylishly furnished, yet still partakes of this protected building’s original historic charm.
At 5,000 square feet, the house offers generous courtyard, a rooftop terrace, access to a swimming pool and incredible views of the Luberon Valley from every bedroom and bathroom. Its spacious interior has been tastefully refashioned in a sophisticated, contemporary style that enhances the original architecture. Best of all, the design allows Provence’s magical light, the inspiration of so many painters, to bathe the interior of the house.
For those wishing to explore Provence beyond the village, L’Ancienne Poste is an ideal home base. Setting out on foot, on one an excellent rental bike or by car, you can immerse yourself in Provence, from lavender fields and limestone cliffs to medieval villages and crumbling Roman ruins, from antiques markets and wine estates to chic contemporary shops and stylish restaurants.
THE PROPERTY
L’Ancienne Poste has been thoughtfully designed to accommodate up to 10 people. There is an option to add an adjacent property for an additional 2 people. A typical group might consist of a number of close friends who want to share a Provençal home base, or a mix of couples and children, young visitors are more than welcome. Alternatively, L’Ancienne Poste would be ideal for one gregarious couple wishing to host various guests at an "open house in Provence" for a couple of weeks or longer.

Why the Owner Chose Menerbes
The Ancienne Poste was the biggest impulse buy I've made so far. My parents had a home just outside Menerbes and one day I found myself walking through the village in a rather romantic state of mind. As I walked up to towards the top of the village I noticed this old ruined post office and a tiny for sale sign. I was instantly charmed by it's perfectly 3 by 3 rows of deep red shutters, the views, the ruined state of the house, the fact that the village was not overun by tourists and the bar's ancient squat toilet.
The Unique Benefits of this House
Space, tranquility and a sense of calm when I return from a boozy long Provencal lunch, walking in the countryside or visiting discovering new corners of this corner of France

From Slow Travel: When May 8-15, 2010, 1 week Location L'Ancienne Poste is located in the quiet, quaint village of Menerbes. The locale is perfect. The local village is quiet but has a few restaurants, shops, food stores. It's just right in that it's not totally overrun with tourists, but has the needed businesses so you don't have to drive everywhere to do everything. It is centrally located to many, many other villages and towns that a visitor definitely wants to see, within easy driving distances. Nearby Amenities You can walk to coffee, groceries, several restaurants, cafes, (and a GREAT little pizza place). The House/Apartment The L'Ancienne Poste is very historical (was the old Post Office) and was recently totally rebuilt in an amazing fashion. It is very contemporary and new, but is built up against a huge rock wall. In fact, the rock wall is the back wall of the interior of the home. Very interesting and my daughter-in-law walked in and just screamed, "This is my dream home!" It is located at the edge of the town with the most amazing view of vineyards, the entire valley, and mountains in the distance, along with several other towns (Gordes, Rousillon and others). The artwork in the home is incredible ... from countries all over the world and the owner has nicely included documentation of each piece and where it comes from. This is just the most amazing, comfortable and wonderful place to spend a week (or more!). Garden Wow! There is a deck roof that allows for wonderful evenings as the sun sets over one of the most beautiful places we've ever been. A nice glass of wine and appetizers makes for such a wonderful memory. The view from up there (the fourth floor of the building) is to die for. Furnishings/Cleanliness/Living Areas Great furniture for comfortable relaxing in the common areas. Plenty of seating for everyone and everything was nicely cleaned. Bedrooms/Bathrooms The beds are great, the linens are top notch, the toiletries are from L'Occitane and so nice. Everyone had their own bathroom and each had lots of space and storage for personal items. Kitchen Yes, we ate in and didn't have any difficulties with a missing pot, pan, or appliance. We had great meals there with all the fresh food and produce available in the area. Plenty of utensils for our family. Problems or Bonuses: None I can even recall. From Slow Travel.com This is the rebuilt old post office in Menerbes. All the bedroom windows face north toward Mt. Ventoux and have a wonderful view of the valley below and Gordes and Rousillon in the distance. This is a very small hill town so nothing is more than 5-10 minutes away. It is located on a street with virtually no car traffic, but there is some foot traffic and more than a few curiosity seekers. Menerbes was a great place to work from. Many of the surrounding towns (Gordes, Rousillon, etc) can be very busy with the buses so it was nice to go back to our sanctuary. Nearby Amenities Small pastry shop, butcher shop and grocery store in the town only a few minutes away. We supplemented a lot of our fresh foods by visiting the various markets in the Luberon. The closest super marchant was Cavaillon - probably a 25 minute drive. There is no bank/ATM in town. Closet was Coustillet - 15 minutes away. There are a handful of restaurants but we usually ate lunch out and cooked dinner at the house. The House/Apartment It is historical from the sense that it was the town's original post office. With a 100% rebuild, I think starting in the late 90s, it is in great shape. First floor was kitchen (gas), dishwasher, washer and dry and a large sitting room. Next to the sitting room is a three-story glass wall, with a bottom that slides open to a courtyard with dining and grilling facilities and open to the sky with the wall opposite the sliding door the mountain itself. Second floor has two bathrooms and bath, third floor has three bedrooms and baths and a sitting room with the TV/DVD. The fourth floor has a computer to the real world and the fifth floor is an open terrace with a view of the valley. Garden The courtyard was great in the evening. No pool, but it has a great arrangement with the hotel Roy Soleil down in the valley - 15 minute walk. Problems or Bonuses None. We took our adult kids. Slow Travel France, vacation rental reviews, Owner, L'ancienne Poste unbelievable" from them. We got it. Agency and Representatives (and price) Philippe is the owner and couldn't have been nicer. Helen Canabakis was on-site, from the UK, but lives in the Luberon now. Very helpful up-front. Didn't need to talk with her until check-out. Do you recommend this vacation rental to others? An unqualified yes. but only if we needed 4-5 bedrooms.
