Accommodations: House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2.5 Baths (Sleeps 4-6)
Hard as it is to believe, this quiet home is just 3 blocks (an easy 5 minute walk) from the center of town. Tucked away from all the hustle and bustle of San Miguel, this wonderful home of a Santa Fe artist and her husband sits between Juarez Park and the central Jardin. Nicknamed the Casa Colorosa, all of the hues inside this brilliantly-colored home were not only chosen by the artist, but actually applied by her and her husband to the walls using many different techniques.
Floor to ceiling windows from the garden entrance flood the living room and dining room with light. The dining room comfortably seats eight, and has a guest bath, and a "secret" patio with an splashing fountain and a private sitting area. From the dining room you step down into the high-ceilinged living room with gas fireplace, many nichos with folk art objects from around the world, colorfully-covered built-in couches, and many of the owner's brilliant paintings, dazzling at night when set off by dramatic lighting. The huge kitchen features a delightful tile cook-top, gas wall oven, and breakfast table and cushioned banco set in a large bay window, overlooking the garden. There is a large pantry with side-by-side refrigerator/freezer, filtered and purified watertap, microwave, and ample storage. Up a few steps and you are in the master bedroom with queen-sized bed, a gas fireplace and its own bath with tiled tub and shower plus walk-in closet. French doors lead to a flagstoned patio in the garden.
Across the patio are the guest quarters: a study with a desk and internet connection and queen hide-a-bed, a separate bedroom with fireplace and two twin beds (or a king, if preferred) and a tiled bath with shower. On top of this building is a laundry room and terrace for hanging clothes. (The owners have shut off the rest of the entire second floor except the laundry.)
The main highlight of this house is a gorgeous garden, complete with an alfresco dining area with fountain, gas grill and table and chairs. A roof-top terrace offers a dramatic 360 degree view of surrounding gardens and the sunset to the west, perfect for that nightly "sun-downer".
The staff includes a maid 5-1/2 days a week and part-time gardener, as well as a professional manager.
The home is wonderfully located on one of the best residential streets, an easy three blocks to the town center, and just a half block to a large park where you can stroll beneath arching trees, plus enjoy birdwatching in mornings and evenings. Only 5 blocks to the southwest lies the Instituto Allende, with its art and language schools, lectures and crafts classes. At least a dozen restaurants and cafes lie within a four-block walk of the house, as well as a half dozen galleries and antique shops.
San Miguel de Allende sits in the beautiful high semi-desert of Mexico's central plateau. With blazing blue skies and constant temperatures, the weather is nearly perfect all year, with dry and sunny winters, and occasional showers to cool the summers. This salubrious physical climate has given rise to the cultural center of Mexico, home to many artists and musicians. San Miguel has again been chosen by readers of Conde Nast's "Traveler Magazine" as one of the 10 most desirable international places to visit. Come see why, for yourself.
