Gite in Rural Normandy
- Minimum stay:Contact owner
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
The gite is a charming, converted cowshed set in beautiful countryside. At least 150 years old, it has recently been refurbished to a very high standard while retaining original beams and other features. La Dehayrie stands almost at the end of a country lane which is a no-through road, so the location is very quiet.
We are part of the commune of Guéhébert, which is halfway between the cathedral city of Coutances and the charming market town of Gavray, both 15-minute drives. The magnificent beach on the Cherbourg peninsula is a 20-minute drive, and less than 90 minutes away are Cherbourg itself, Caen and St Malo/Dinard airport. There is plenty of choice of excellent reasonably-priced restaurants in the neighbouring towns and villages.
The gite has an open-plan living area approximately five metres by four metres (16 feet by 13 feet), including a fully-fitted modern kitchen. Upstairs, there is a double-size bedroom with en suite shower room with large shower area. Heating throughout is by electricity. Lighting is by modern spots. Wireless broadband is supplied, with a router in the gite itself.
Outside, the gite has its own small terrace. West-facing, it enjoys glorious evening sunshine in the summer months. A car is essential, as the nearest market town is a 15-minute drive away, though a few shops are nearer.
This is a holiday gite for a couple who above all want peace and quiet, with excellent walking either in the glorious local countryside or by the sea. Riding and golf are available nearby. For the more adventurous, you can take a ride in a small plane or go parachuting.
The major popular attractions of Lower (Western) Normandy - e.g. the Normandy landing beaches and their museums, Bayeux, Honfleur, Mont St Michel - are an easy day-trip away, almost all at less than an hour's drive.

A great place to get away from it all, off the beaten track with only the birds for company, but also within an hours drive or so of the sights of Normandy (landing beaches, Mont St. Michel, Granville to name a few). The gite itself is compact but was plenty big enough for two of us and our dog. The garden is lovely and the bird song is a wonderful background.Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway.

We spent five fabulous days in Normandy, and a bit it Brittany, all from this very fine gite near Coutances. The setting was charming (we had dinner on the patio once) and the quarters just right for us - clean, complete and comfortable --- especially important in light of the long days we spent out and about. We have told all our friends about it, and would certainly recommend it to anyone looking to tour as we did, and if ever we return to the area, we'll hope to be able to stay there again. Thanks again, and best wishes for a fine season for all.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway.

Small but beautiful gite down a quiet country lane where the only sound to be heard in the morning is the birds singing, even the cows are quiet. Lovely church down the lane which is always unlocked. Beautiful location, not far from the coast, Granville and Le Mont St Michel. Great hosts arrived half way through our holiday who invited us over the the main house within 5 minutes of arrival opening the wine. Would definitely recommend.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway.

The cottage is full of light with gorgeous wood beams and could be in architectural digest. What set this spot apart from others we were in was the care the proprietor took in leaving all sorts of valuable information including Wifi. The care they have for others and their home is evident. The yard grounds are peaceful and beautiful, and the town is the smallest we stayed in but well positioned to get to lots of great spots.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers.

My Wife and I had a most enjoyable week returning to the hetic world only when we wanted to, a time to recharge the batteries and with the time read a book without thinking I must do this or that. The listings are completely accurate, it is well mantained and the owners are very helpful. Highly recommended .Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+.

This gite is the perfect escape for a quiet retreat in the country, but central to the Normandy beaches, exploring the countryside and visiting the many quaint villages in the surrounding area. Coutances is a 15 min drive with a great shopping selection for the small French bakery, patisserie, meat market or a larger LeClerc (similiar to Target/WalMart in the USA). While we also missed meeting the owners, Doug & Heather, we spent a very enjoyable evening with the caretakers, Allen & Lynn. We highly recommend this gite!Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+.

We had the pleasure of staying at La Dehayrie in May 2011. The description of the property is accurate and great thought has been put into the comfort of their guests. We were within easy driving distance of the Landing Beaches, Mont St Michel and many interesting historical churches and chateaus. We were also just a short drive from bakeries (most important), shops and restaurants. I would recommend this property to anyone, this was the first time we had rented using the VRBO website and we couldn't have picked a better owner to deal with.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+.

My husband, Bill O'Neill, and I stayed at La Dehayrie this past May and had a wonderful time. We loved the "cow shed" and were very comfortable there. We were fortunate that our hosts arrived before we left for Canada and found them very accommodating and they made us feel very welcome. We would go back and would recommend La Dehayrie to friends.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0
