A wonderful place in the Amiata mountains of Southern Tuscany. Podere Asche has an out-in-the-country feeling but is only a 15 minute walk from a friendly medieval hill town called Santa Fiora. It is an organic farm with beautiful views, nestled in a small green valley and surrounded by chestnut forests. There are five bedrooms, each with a small bath and a large common area with a fireplace and kitchen, The house can accommodate 15 people, making it ideal for groups.
Sandra Martellini, the owner, and his family don't live there, but visit every day, so you have the advantage of local hosts with more privacy than the usual bed and breakfast. Children are welcome and enjoy all the animals. Santa Fiora has outdoor concerts in summer and a lively piazza with gelato and traditional Italian life all around. This is still the Italy of old.
One could get there by bus from Siena or Grosseto; there is also a bus from Rome. It is an hour to 90 minutes drive to Etruscan areas, the Maremma, the Mediterranean coast, hot springs, Montalcino and the Val D'Orcia. It is about two hours south of Siena.
The cost is €45/night for a room accommodating up to three people, plus €8/person for a catered breakfast (optional). All five rooms with five baths are €200/night, or €1050/week (Off-season €150/night; email for details).
