With panoramic ocean and mountain views, easy access to the best swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and dolphin watching in Hawaii, and a gorgeous, peaceful location on the edge of a coffee plantation, surrounded by mango, avocado and papaya trees, this large, light-filled, comfortably furnished house is perfect for your Big Island vacation.
The house is located twenty minutes south of Kailua - just beyond the hotels, tourists and traffic in the lush coffee growing region of South Kona, near the beautiful town of Captain Cook. It's situated two miles above the world-class kayaking and snorkeling destination of Kealakekua Bay, where pristine waters are home to the Spinner dolphin and Captain Cook’s monument.
The spacious two bedroom house has beautiful hardwood floors throughout and a great room that provides amazing ocean views and spectacular sunsets. The light-filled great room has a wall of windows to the west, a high vaulted ceiling, and a fully equipped custom kitchen with mahogany trimmed cabinets and island.
It includes a full living area with very comfortable leather couches and chair, a stereo and TV. A glass dining table faces the Bay view and the colorful tropical landscape of the front yard. A large sundeck allows open-air dining or a great spot for a sunset Mai Tai. Vintage Hawaiian posters and a ceiling fan complete the room.
The master bedroom , which features a comfortable new queen sized plush-top mattress, has a roofed screened lanai with a gorgeous unobstructed view across the rolling coffee fields and up the flank of the mountain. The second bedroom also has a queen bed and views. The pretty bathroom has tub, shower, and custom tile and cabinets.
Wake to birdsong! The house is far above from the road--you won't hear traffic sounds. Enjoy Kona coffee or tropical fruit in the morning sun on the private rear lanai, looking out over the open coffee farm lands rolling up the mountain. Stroll through the gorgeous park-like yard with lawns, flowers and fruits. The country setting is quiet and peaceful, but close to restaurants and stores.
High speed internet access, phone, stereo, cable TV and DVD, and free laundry room are included.

We were very pleased with this vacation rental, which we booked for 16 nights in March. Booking arrangements went smoothly. The owner, Tad, returned emails and calls in a timely manner, and will accept Visa. The house is just as pictured on the site, large and open-concept. Beds are comfortable, and everything is in working order. There is even a coffee-grinder for those Kona Coffee beans that you will buy right in the neighbourhood. If you want to see coffee plants, just take a walk beside the house. The view of Kealakekua Bay is great (take your binoculars). We saw many fine sunsets. It was very quiet at night, and the house was cool and breezy, just right for sleeping. We had no problem with bugs, perhaps because the friendly gecko population was dining on them. There are frequent light showers in this area, but they didn't bother us. During the day, we would just travel in whatever direction was less rainy on that day, and at night the rain and the coquil frog-song would lull us to sleep. There are no blinds or drapes on any of the many windows, which didn't bother us, but some people might not like it. The location puts you within less than 2 hours of Volcanoes National Park, and both black sand and green sand beaches are even closer, if those are of interest. If you want to snorkel, "Two-Step" is very close, as is Kahalu'u. There's a kayak available for going to Kealakekua Bay for snorkeling, or you can hike there, as we did. The house has a collection of guide and reference books about the area that are helpful for planning what you want to see, or identifying what you saw! The house is about 40 minutes from the Kona airport. We had some trouble finding the place, arriving at night. It was very dark, and we neglected to follow Tad's instructions to the letter. There is parking room for only 1 car for this place, and 1 for the apartment below, and it's a tight fit, but not a problem. If you go, be sure to shop at nearby Choice Mart for fish. They have good prices and selection. There's a small Sunday farmer's market behind the store, which is a good place for fruits and vegetables, as well as homemade foods and genuine crafts of Hawaii. We went to Annie's Island Fresh Burgers, just down the highway, and got take-out from Jake's Island Barbecue. Both were delicious. We visited the Kona Coffee Co-op for coffee and macadamia nuts. There are many plantation tours available in the area. We highly recommend this vacation rental.

I stayed here with five fellow students for a week, and it was amazing! I would certainly recommend this place. It was clean and ready for us when we arrived, and we had no problems with the place while we were here! Near Kona (20 minutes or so), this was a great home base from which to start our adventures! Having a gas grill available was fantastic, and being able to borrow the Kayak for the day to take out to Captain Cook to snorkel was amazing (if you stay here, you have to do this at least once!). Thanks again, and I will certainly keep this place in mind for the next time I come back!

We just returned from a week stay in this upper unit. We loved our stay in this quiet location away from kailua-Kona but still very convenient to everything. Just up the hill from Place of Refuge and Kealakeakua Bay, two best snorkle spots in south Kona area. Owner had great recommendations. The surroundings are beautiful. Loved waking up to the birds and the coffee field views. We never heard any field equipment. The great room and kitchen is awesome. Large enough to spread out and relax. Lot's of thoughtful touches, comfortable lounge chairs outside, gas BBQ, appliances, free laundry, kayaks, floatation vest for our 8 year old, boogie boards etc. LOVED the full screened in back deck and the wall of windows in the great room, all with screens too. Great neighbors too. Be aware, you are closer to nature here in a quiet local's neighborhood so you may have a few more geckos and other local fauna than in hotels. (We saw what we thought was a cane spider, eek) Anyway, we are already planning next year's stay here. Owner is very responsive. Mahalo!!

We arrived at night and the tropical sounds of the cicadas were we all could hear. We enjoyed the stars from the deck while having some tea, then retired to a comfortable bed. Early in the morning, we woke to an orchestra of tropical bird calls, matched only by the local rooster. Light streamed into the master bedroom announcing a magical view of the grass covered hills behind the house, unobstructed by any other houses or signs of civilization. Ahhh… finally in the tropics! The kitchen and bath were so well equipped that breakfast and preparations for the day were a breeze. This beautiful home established an exotic and relaxing mood which stayed with us through our entire week in Kona. A tropical paradise with all the comforts of home!

The house is a wonderful place from which to explore the Big Island. Situated above the Bay, the deck has a lovely view and is a great place for enjoying breakfast, dinner or a sunset cocktail. Sun pours into the living and dining room so it is a nice place to hang after coming back from the beach. It’s close enough to the beaches, yet outside of the tourist jam of Kona. The kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed for cooking and enjoying meals. Would definitely come back!

"Spectacular sunsets" indeed: the whole bay and ocean beyond lit up with a positively glorious orange glow from the setting sun. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. The description is accurate: no road noise, a beautiful great room, etc. We were awakened each day by a wonderful variety of birds calling. The nearby Kona historical society Living History Coffee Farm and the Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden are worth a visit.
