Secluded Hillside Cottage in the Redwoods - Guerneville
Year Purchased: 1995
Why the Owner Chose Guerneville
In 1995 I purchased what was to become the Hillside Cottage. The Hillside Cottage is one of four homes on the hillside along our stretch of road. I live in one of the other homes. The Cottage built in the early 1900's was originally a summer vacation cottage. Every evening and weekend for the better part of a year I renovated the cottage. The Hillside Cottage has the benefit of being the third house I renovated. (I made all my major mistakes on the earlier ones!)
The Unique Benefits at this House
The Hillside Cottage grounds have continued to evolve over the years . Hillside terraces have been added, built of Sonoma fieldstone and carried down the hillside one rock at a time. On the upper terraces young fruit trees struggle, signs of my stubbornness. Although yet to bear fruit, I finally have my orange tree! I have higher hopes for the apple, pear, and peach trees.
Many guests comment that the hillside, the redwoods, the privacy fences and the terraces create a feeling of privacy and seclusion without being isolated.

Owner's Map of Guerneville
In 1983 I was living in Los Angeles and visiting San Francisco when friends first brought me through the Sonoma County redwoods to the historic Union Hotel in Occidental for a family style Italian dinner. I was completely overwhelmed by the natural beauty of the area. My friends had a good laugh when in my excitement I suggested we buy a vacation home together. Little could we have guessed that just a few years later I would leave Los Angeles and buy my "vacation home" just a few miles from the Union Hotel in Guerneville and become a full time Russian River resident. Twenty-one years later, a walk through Armstrong Woods State Park still leaves me in awe. Each winter after a winter storm, I still trek out in my raincoat and boots to check the River level. I still await with great anticipation each February the spring daffidils marking the arrival of spring. I still love to visit the seals lounging near the the mouth of the Russian River in Jenner by the Sea and watch the sea otters surf in the tidal currents of the estuary and I still get excited when I see the spring wild flowers in full blooom when travelling the breathtaking cliffs of Hwy 1 between Jenner and Ft. Ross State Park. I still love browsing Saturday flea market in Safeway parking lot in downtown Guerneville while waiting for my fantastic and affordable Mexican dinner from the "truck" in the parking lot. But what I really love, whether gone for a day or a month, is returning to the Russian River, the Redwood forest and home.

This is two of the best days I have spent anywhere. This Cottage is storybook type and it makes me and Kris feel magical. The decor is superb and the host is fantastic. I would love to make this home our home when not in Sacramento.(Rick) Also thanks for the tomatoes, kindness and care, and all of the special touches that made our trip so memorable. Loved Jason Mraz too! With Appreciation, Kristine

Our return to the Hillside Cottage this week, like our family reunion, was a return to the comfort of being wrapped in loving arms that are even better than you remembered. We will be back. ************************************************************** Alec, We had a wonderful stay. I wrote in the guest book but wanted to say thank you again. We spent so much time with the family that we never drank the champagne, next time! Also, didn't find and couldn't remember the "house rules" so didn't wash linens. Hope that is okay. Take care. Hope to see you next year.

Thank you Alec for a wonderful cottage to retire after a busy day of family gatherings. My husband wants to move in permanantly! We honeymooned just up the road from here at the family ranch (Litton) 42 years ago and your little piece of heaven here reminded us of that time.

Dear Alec, As we drove up to your lovely cottage we were amazed by your zen garden. Having read your previous reviews we were aware of the steps up to the road from your cottage. Our six year old cocker spaniel loved the challenge! :) For us your cottage was a home away from our busy downtown San Francisco home. Thank you for your lovely welcome of champagne, chocolates and music as we arrived. Awesome!
