Why the Owner Chose Fairplay
I looked all over the country for a place to build my mountain home. My first priority was proximity to world class skiing. Breckenridge Ski Resort (1/2 hour away) is the number one destination for European Skiers when they leave Europe to Ski. That's the definition of world class to me:)
While I love the town of Breckenridge, I wanted a more secluded, quiet experience for my mountain home. The Hifalutin Lodge sits in a beautiful Aspen grove, and directly adjoins national forest land. It's in a friendly community made up of locals and vacation home owners.
I also enjoy cross country skiing and mountain biking. Both, depending on the season, can be done directly out the door of my home...you don't even need a car to access spectacular single track mountain bike and ski trails in the Pike National Forest.
The Unique Benefits at this House
The view from the upstairs great room is beautiful. Aspen trees gently sway in the mountain breeze...their leaves practically within reach out of huge windows. I locked myself away in the cabin for six weeks to finish writing my first book in 2009. The beauty and serenity of the mountains is inspiring.
An amazing restored 1880's gold mining town. Located in Fairplay, Colorado, the museum is an accurate representation of a mining town between 1860 and 1900. Thirty-four authentic buildings filled with over 60,000 artifacts portray most of the economic and social aspects of boomtown life. Seven of the buildings are on their original sites; the others have been moved from abandoned camps and ghost towns in South Park, a 900 square mile basin surrounded by Colorado's majestic Rocky Mountains. www.SouthParkCity.org
All that is left of the mining town of Buckskin Joe is the cemetery and its memories. Close inspection of the tombstone dates reveal a cemetery population boom in 1861 and 1862. The cemetery, which is down the road on the right from the settlement, also reveals the struggles of the miners and settlers. Does the ghost of Silver Heels still haunt this cemetery in Buckskin Joe? Many locals have seen a ghostly spirit, who is veiled and dressed in black walking among these old stones.
World class skiing, both alpine and cross-country, great shopping, restaurants, galleries and so much more about a half an hour away. go to http://www.breckenridge.com/ for more information.
Great fun and a little less intense than Breck. Very family friendly. http://www.skimonarch.com/

I love to ski and mountain bike. I built this house (Ok...a contractor built the house) in 2005 to fulfill my lifelong dream of having a mountain home. My wife and kids don't like skiing at all...but they love going to the mountains!

The cabin was everything we could have asked for. We stayed during Thanksgiving week. It was beautiful, clean and just a great place to spend our vacation. And of course the price was unbeatable. The views were even more beautiful than the pictures could show. The owners where very helpful and responded quickly to all questions. I would highly recommend this property to anyone wanting to spend a wonderful time in Colorado. It was close to Breckenridge, Frisco and Keystone, yet private and secluded. The children (young and old) enjoyed the games, the pool table, the snow and the quietness. The town of Fairplay was only a few miles and had restaurants, grocery, and more. I would recommend tubing in Frisco, shopping and the gondola ride in Breckenridge and our favorite was Dinner & A Sleigh ride in Keystone. It was close to great ski runs- Breckenridge, Monarch, Copper Mountain & Keystone. It was overall a wonderful experience and we look forward to staying at the Hifalutin Lodge again. We miss it already.

Relaxation with a view! And without the temptations of home such as a tv in every room and Internet. Great walking and nearby mountain biking trails. Coffee, Internet and local chat at Java Moose in town. Not having Internet gave me a chance to get out and explore the local scene. The peacefulness of the cabin, woods and excellent accommodations (all I needed were a few groceries) made it a very pleasurable and hopefully repeatable experience. Thank you for sharing it.

My husband and I stayed here with another couple in July. We found the cabin very clean and the accomodations great. It is a perfect cabin to share with another couple as there is a bedroom and bath downstairs and then 2 bedrooms and bath upstairs. With the pool room downstairs and the great room upstairs there is lots of room as well as as much privacy as you want. We spent the daytime ATVing in the area around Alma which was an easy drive. Evenings were spent relaxing on the balcony and playing pool. The location is very private and quiet which we enjoyed. Much more peaceful than being in a town condo. Having a washer and dryer was another big plus as this was just the front end of our vacation. Our only regret was not having more days there. If we return to the area I will definitely check to see if this cabin is available.

We arrived at night and it was a little hard to find at first but the owner described it clearly on the email on how to find it. This is a beautiful lodge. Very quiet. Not too far from Breckenridge The only thing we wish were the Internet and the second tv on the main living area. But hey we can live without the web for a while. The owner even has two sled for us to play with coming down the driveway. That was something. We had a very great time staying at this place. Highly recommend.

We were visiting friends and Boulder and decided to make a trip here part of our stay. There was plenty of room for all of us (including four kids between the ages of 2 and 13!), the house was clean, well stocked and nicely maintained. The pool table was a big hit! We also made several day trips from the house to various towns and other locations, and the house was a good jumping off point.

Absolutely loved this cozy cabin. We have stayed in many places in Colorado and this is our favorite. The cabin was beautiful inside and out. We saw mule deer right out the window of the cabin. Fly fishing was just down the road. Lots of great trails to hike in the national forrest behind the cabin. It was just a short drive to white water rafting, horseback riding, and shopping Especially loved that it was less than 30 minutes to Breckenridge. Will definitely come back during ski season.

We really enjoyed staying way up in the mountains in this fabulous log cabin. The pictures and description don't do it justice. It is located in a quiet area so there is not a lot of traffic. There were six of us including two children but we were not crowded or bothered by each other. Lots of things to do including fishing in lakes that are almost within walking distance. We had fun but didn't catch anything. Fairplay has some great places to eat and of course Breckenridge is always great to visit and explore. We intend to return in the winter and go skiing. Great value for the money!!
Owner response:Night crawlers from the local fishing store should solve the fishing problem:) I've caught lots of big trout with them from those ponds. Glad you enjoyed your stay!

We had a great trip to the Colorado this summer. This is a beautiful located near all of the wonderful things the mountians have to offer; white water rafting, off road jeeping, mountian biking and fly fishing are what we enjoyed and that is jsut the beging of activities in the area. The accomadations are first class, clean and wll maintianed. and made the trip even more enjoyable. The home has a very nice and quite location and is very well kept. There is plenty of space for living, dining, sleepin and an occasional game of pool. The outdoor deck is also a wonderful place to enjoy the surrounding nature. The photos and description represent the property nicely. I hope to come back in the near future and will recomend this property to my friends.

My family came up from Dallas this September and we all spend a wonderful fall weekend at your home. Fantastic! The aspens had all turned and the entire area on the side of the mountain was bright orange and yellow. Absolutely beautiful! The house was very nice and spacious for the four of us, and the patio was great. At night we brought out my spotting scope and looked at stars and both nights we were visited (probably 100 yards away) by bugling bull elk! We didn't see them but they were very close and kept my family entertained. We drove around the side roads around the house and we saw a bull moose in a river bottom. So great! This house is on our list of places to return to when the family comes back up to visit next fall. The only tiny complaint (and this is really a small one) is that the kitchen utensils could use a bit of an update. Really dull knives. But obviously this is a minor thing. Overall the place was awesome and in a prime location - 20 minutes from great hiking, fishing, and 30 minutes from Breckenridge. We went to Breckenridge not knowing that their annual Oktoberfest was that weekend. So, we parked and walked around amongst the other 2,000 people and had a blast, drank a few good beers, had some sausages, and just enjoyed the cool mountain air. Wonderful place and we would highly recommend it. Barton Denver, CO

We have rented the Hifalutin Lodge several times and highly recommend it to others. The location is great with trails for hiking direct from the property plus there are many opportunities for great jeeping and hiking trails within a short distance of the community. You will find the house well appointed with most everything you need for your stay. The pool table in the basement provides great evening entertainment. The owners are very accommodating and offer their home at a very reasonable price for the area. During your stay, don't miss taking in the town of Fairplay nearby---it has a lot to offer!
