would definately stay here again....Canaan Valley is one of my very favorite places ever...used to have a place up there myself...the house if fully furnished....made great use of all the kitchen appliances and such..hot tub and outdoor fire pit were put to good use...used this as a girls getaway, my friend and her daughter along with my 13 yr old golden retriever had an amazing few days...Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+.

We had a fantastic time at Bears Lair. The house is extremely comfortable. We made great use of the Hottub, it was lovely to be able to relax and watch the Deer roam on the lawn. The Visitor Information centre in Davis were very helpful. We visited Blackwater Falls and Senaca Rocks and Caves which were great. We had a fun afternoon on the lake in the Canoe and spent plenty of time playing pool when the weather was not so good. We would certainly recommend this cabin and would love to return in the future.Recommended for: Families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

I can't really express how impressed I was with my ski trip and stay at the Bear's Lair. First off, I arrived after a heavy snow, so the place was postcard perfect for winter adventures. Old Norman Rockwell himself could not have painted a more beautiful picture. Then walking into the entrance and seeing all the rustic construction and decor automatically sets the tone for a first rate experience. The pictures you see on this site are an excellent hint of what it looks like, but you have to be there with the occasional creaks of aged wood flooring under foot and the smell of fireplace smoke in the air. Every room is picture perfect with decor befitting a Bear's Lair motif. There's something for everyone, from small children up. There's a well appointed kitchen with pretty much everything you'll need. After an excellent day of skiing at Timberline ski resort, which is only minutes away, the hot tub was a fantastic way to relax for a while. I had a lot of fun with my friends shooting pool in the billiards room, that was a nice addition! Then later watching a movie down in the "pit" next to a roaring fire in that hugh fireplace. That was awsome, and so was the entire visit. I was so impressed that I look forward to future trips to the Bear's Lair not just during the winter, but would like to check it out during some of the other seasons as well. Thank you for having me and hope to be back soon!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Home is well appointed with all that you will need for an awesome vacation. The deer are abundant and will come right up to the front door because they're starving. Four wheel or all wheel drive a must during ski season as the lane to house is not plowed. Home is a two minute drive from Timberline ski resort; never went to Canaan ski resort as we had it all right at Timberline. Layout of home is unique with one master on main floor and second master and two other bedrooms are upstars; second master is separated by an open walkway to other bedrooms which are a queen and a bunkroom-quite a nice layout. My reason for downgrading it to a "4" was because I felt that the appliances could be updated and more organization into pots and pans, items in cabinets etc., but other than that this home has it all.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

This is a wonderfully spacious rental home that is close to cross country and downhill ski slopes. Three families shared the house and everyone had plenty of space. The home is very comfortable and well decorated. The kitchen is well equipped and has plenty of plates and utensils for everyone. There is plenty of space at the dining room table for everyone plus lots of food. After dinner, you can watch DVDs on the family room plasma TV or play pool in the pool room or play a board game in front of the big fireplace. There were already DVDs there, but we brought our favorites from home too. There were board games and puzzles too. The kids especially enjoyed playing in the snow in the yard and then jumping into the hot tub - don't forget to bring your bathing suit even in the winter. The cross country skiing was tons of fun. The people who work at the cross country ski area are really nice and helpful. If you've never been before (like me) it is harder than it looks, but worth the effort. The downhill skiing is fun too. It was cold and they were making snow when we were there so the slopes weren't too icy. Unfortunately, we ran out of time before we could try the tubing and go shopping. We had a great time and can't wait to go back! It really isn't too far from the DC metro area for a nice weekend get away.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, families with young children, adventure seekers, families with teenagers.

Coming from a season of no snow here in Virginia, it was a joy to arrive to several fresh inches for our weekend in Canaan Valley. The property was so picturesque and very well equipped for a fun-filled get-a-way with friends. This house has a great layout, very comfortable beds and furnishings were themed and beautiful. Every aspect of our time here was enjoyable, from the pancakes on the skillet to the nachos and beer after cross-country skiing at the whitetail restaurant (a winter must)! So much to do, so little time! We explored great local shops filled with Appalacian artistry and antiques, while others enjoyed skiing and snowboarding. Everything you could want is within minutes and what's better than being outdoors all day and snuggled up by a roaring fire at night, watching movies or playing board games with friends! This home is meant for fun, I felt it the moment we arrived and there isn't one thing I would change. We can't wait to go again!Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

The house was beautiful-- everything we could have wanted. We were with our 4 young children who loved the breezeway. We enjoyed the canoe although we recommend some directions being left in the house so we know which canoe to use, where to find it and the oars, and life jackets. That was a bit difficult and the realty company didn't know much on their own. We also would like some directions for using the fireplace. (we've never used one that isn't gas and felt a little intimidated knowing if we needed to open a damper, etc.) So little things like that would be helpful to someone like us who never used the house before. We had the best time, ever, though, and are planning on booking a reservation again for this fall. Thanks for letting us use your "dreamhouse."Did you find this review helpful?
