Thar’s gold in them thar hills! Dahlonega, the Georgia gateway to the Appalachians is the site of the first U.S. gold rush. Come pan for gold in historic Dahlonega on the Chestatee river. This large home is located directly on the Chestatee river just before the Coppermines. It was recently renovated, and is now ready for eager treasure hunters and vacationers.

This warm, inviting home on the river was built in 1996. It has five bedrooms, three and a half baths, two great rooms, and two kitchens. All the rooms have high ceilings including the ground floor. If you like vaulted wood ceilings and the heavenly sound and view of the river just two hundred feet off the covered back deck this is place to spend your vacation.

There are two suites upstairs each on a different floor with their own private bathrooms. Guests with bad knees or other disabilities can get to the mountain splendor bedroom on the main floor by going up just three steps outside. The honeymoon suite makes up the loft floor and has an Amish king-size bed and a vaulted wood ceiling. The terrace level (ground floor) has three bedrooms, one full bathroom, a great room/kitchen combo and a terrace under the main deck that also looks out at the gorgeous river and shoals.

Take your choice of the Goldrush bedroom with golden walls, an antique wooden poster bed and antique dresser, the Bear Footin bedroom with a full-size brass bed and bear theme or the Wilderness Adventure bedroom that has a built-in bunk bed and two twin beds below (kids love it)! If you have more than 11 people in your party there are two sofas, two full-size inflatable mattresses and pump in the loft closet (one sits off the ground like a regular bed) as well as another light-weight twin mattress you can set up in the honeymoon suite or in the rain forest great room on the ground floor.

The accommodations are perfect for two couples with children, large extended families, a girls, guys or couples getaway, wedding parties (we get a lot), family and company gatherings. The main floor and loft suite have an old feel to them even though the house is relatively new. Several rooms have antique dressers and gold accents.

There are a few old photos of Dahlonega as well as some books about the area. The ground floor has a newer, more fun feel with a rain forest theme in the greatroom area. Even the bathrooms are fun in this house! You'ens come down yonder and have yur picture taken with our life-size wooden hillbilly, Jed! He'll be out on the deck with his moonshine awaiting your arrival.

Have you ever panned for gold? This house comes with 8 gold pans so your family and friends can come search for gold without ever leaving the property. The house has badminton, volleyball, horseshoes, croquet and a picnic table so you can play next to the river.

There are many things to do in Dahlonega including outdoor sports like kayaking, fishing, hiking, mountain biking and golf. If outdoors sports are not for you there are also several vineyards (Wolf Mountain Vineyards, Three Sisters Vineyards, Frogtown Mountain Vineyards), antique shops, arts and crafts shops, wildlife preserves and festivals to explore. The Smith House is a historic family style buffet worth visiting although somewhat pricey for country cooking (about $17 per person). Lake Lanier is also only 30 minutes south of Dahlonega in Cumming and Gainesville.

Why the Owner Chose Dahlonega

I purchased this property because my sister loves rivers and kayaking and she lives in Dahlonega. The rentals from our river house help support my elderly father with his assisted living expenses. Dahlonega is a very quaint, charming small town in the north Georgia mountains. Our river house is located directly on the Chestatee river where the first goldrush in the US took place. There are a lot of antique stores and vineyards so we get a lot of wedding parties that book our house.

The Unique Benefits at this House

The sound of the river just off the deck is heavenly. It's very relaxing to sit on the deck overlooking the river listening to the water hit the shoals below. Our river house is located on a dead end road so it's fairly private with only a two or three homes beyond ours. There is a lot of hiking in the area and you can fish and kayak on our property. However, one of the most unique activities you can do on the property is pan for gold. We have about 8 gold pans in the house for our guests to see what they can find in the river. We also have horseshoes, badminton and volleyball you can set up in the grassy area next to the river. The square in Dahlonega is very charming and quaint. There are many stores and restaurants you can visit and if you like antiques or vineyards Dahlonega has those as well.

Owner's Map of Dahlonega

I live in Cumming, GA. I have a full time job at a bank, but we have been renting out our river house as a vacation getaway home for seven years now. I love nature and the outdoors especially the mountains. I enjoy hiking, bicycling, kayaking, walking and my pets. I try to give all our guests a good deal including one night free if two or more nights are booked. I get a lot of compliments about the house and have been told by several guests the house was better than expected. We get a lot of wedding parties that book our house since the local vineyards host a lot of weddings. I have enjoyed renting the river house out and I like knowing our house has given lots of families life-long memories they will never forget.

Christmas with family in Dahlonega

We completely enjoyed our stay in this spacious home. Seven adults and one small dog had a wonderful time together in the beautiful mountains of North Georgia! The home was just what we needed and was convenient to the town of Dahlonega as well as biking trails and places for walks and pictures. We would recommend this lovely home to others and the owner was extremely easy to work with. Thanks again for wonderful memories in Dahlonega.

Fit our need perfectly

Like most, I'm generally concerned when booking a place site unseen especially when you have six other people depending on you. I emailed Beth, the owner, and she was quick to respond and answered by questions thoroughly. She was very accommodating to our schedule and arrangements. The weather was perfect for our stay. We were in town for a cycling event and the location was suitably located for our needs. It had plenty of room for our 7 adults and 2 kids, and we had a wonderful time together at Beth's home. I would not hesitate to book the home again.

Owner response:I'm so glad to see our guests enjoy our river house. It really is in a beautiful location and we get many repeat guests for the bicylcing races and the festivals throughout the year. We've had the same guests for Thanksgiving rent the house for five years now. I would say almost 50% of our bookings are for wedding parties at the local vineyards. Our river house can sleep at least 11 people so we book up fast. I like to offer my guests a good place for a reasonable rate so it's a win-win for everyone!

Great for our family reunion.

Guest: Nada (Little Rock, AR)
Date of Stay: 07/17/10 Review Submitted: 07/26/10

We had a family reunion (total of 5 adults) and had picked the Dahlonega area because it was a mid-point for all of the different directions from where we were coming. This house perfectly suited our needs with the different levels that allowed everyone to have their own private space. We spent most mornings and evenings outside on the wonderful deck. The ceiling fans really made it pleasant. The kitchen was large enough for us all to get meals prepared, etc. We went to Dahlonega, Helen, tubing on the Chestatee River, rented a pontoon boat at Lake Lanier, and mainly relaxed and ate way too much food. We were grateful that the property is pet-friendly, too. There is also a doggie daycare/boarding facility nearby (Animals At Home) that we used on days we would be gone for longer periods of time. We had a great time, and the house was perfect for our needs.
