Perfect Spot for a Family of 4

The Beach Lover's Retreat is just what the name says: a well-situated and fully-equipped cottage with everything you need to have a great vacation at the beach in Santa Cruz. It's just a block or so away from 26th St. Beach and a short drive over to Capitola which is where we spent most of our time with our young children learning how to surf. No need to bring much gear (except wetsuits and boards!) the house comes stocked with all the gear - towels, totes, chairs, and sand toys. The public and private spaces are nicely separate, so you can put the kids down and still hang out and visit with the grown ups. The outdoor spaces are also wonderful and inviting. Cal was a quick call away with any questions we had and we would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a great stay in Santa Cruz or Capitola.

Quiet Relaxing Beach House

This was our third trip to this cozy little beach house with our one and a half year old son and dog. I can't begin to say how much we love the house and the area. The house has everything you would need from cooking, beach play supplies, movies and blankets/bedding. With less than a five minute walk to the beach it made it nice to take our little one home to nap and then head back. The neighborhood I fould to be very quiet, relaxing and layed back. There is so much to do and see in the area you will not have a dull day. Cal and Linda are easy to work with and easy to get in touch with if any questions may come up. I would reccommend this to anyone I know and can't wait to plan may next trip to the beach.

Charming Beach Home

We spent the weekend in this wonderfully charming and fully equipped beach home. It had everything we needed and the whole house is in great condition. It is fully stocked with any item you could want while on vacation. Plus, they had a great selection of books, DVDs and games for the kids. The decor is really well done and it makes the whole place feel like a home. The location is really close to the beach and the backyard is great for lounging. Would definitely come back and visit again. Thanks!

This home was absolutely wonderful to stay in. The owners were very responsive and the home was super clean and very well equipped (including such thoughtful touches as spices, coffee and board games). There was also a nice fenced yard which we greatly enjoyed, including BBQ for the adults and buckets and hose for my gleeful toddler. There are nice beaches within walking distance.

This home exceeded our expectations that we had based on the vrbo reviews. The location is excellent - steps from the beach, or a stroll along the east side cliffs, and convenient to quality retail establishments along Portola Dr or 41st St. The owners clearly put a lot of thought into the renters' experience. The home is tastefully decorated and great consideration is apparent in the detailed amenities. We stayed with our 3 small children for 4 nights and comfortably cooked in and outside, enjoyed roasting marshmallows in the firepit, and slept comfortably. The location provides easy access to Rtes 1, 17 and 101 and day trips to Monterrey, Silicon Valley, or SF are entirely within reach.

Recommended for: Families with young children, sightseeing.

we recently stayed at this fabulous vrbo for a week. it was amazing! the owners go above and beyond to make sure all will have a great time. i have 3 children and small dogs who accompanied us and there was everything you can think of to make the stay enjoyable for all. the walk to the beach was very short and is a perfect beach for kids and dogs. the beautiful backyard is also a lovely place to relax and the dogs to play safely. we can not wait to revisit this perfect beach retreat!! when we returned home from this lovely vacation i told everyone i know to check it out. i very highly recommend this beach lover's retreat!!

Great place, very confortable, well equipped, clean and very well maintained. The owners are extremely responsive to e-mail and a very friendly couple who made sure that the house was prepared to welcome our family. The house is very close to the beach and about 10 minutes by car to downtown Santa Cruz.

Our family of four (children 10 & 12) plus our dog stayed six nights at Beach Lover's Retreat. The owners thought of every detail to make our stay enjoyable (from furnishings, movies, music, dog toys & the list goes on). Their generosity is readily apparent. The house location is great. We walked to the beach, coffee, pizza, and shops every day (plus one long & lovely walk to Capitola). We highly recommend this property and hope to be back again soon.

We found the home extremely well stocked with kitchenware, reading material, local info, television, radio,DVD..You get the idea. Appliances are all late model and functional. Decor was pleasing and in keeping with the beach setting. It definitely has the feel of a home rather than a rental. The location is good in that it is close to the beach & near both Santa Cruz & Capitola. Altho we do not have pets, the house is well equipped for such.

A Gem in Santa Cruz

We spent a long weekend at Beach Lover's Retreat and had the best experience. We use VRBO frequently and this property is top notch. It is beautifully remodeled, landscaped and decorated. It is very well stocked with movies, games books, kitchen supplies, beach gear and everything to keep your pup happy! Our family of 4 plus our dog were very comfortable. The location is very close to 26th Ave beach, which is fairly quiet and dog friendly. Cal and Linda were great to work with, excellent communicators. We want to move in there - the kids say they would be OK with sharing a room :-)!

Beautiful Kid and Pet Friendly Rental

We have stayed in several vrbo rentals and this one tops our list of favorites. We are a family with a toddler and small dog, and we loved how truly kid and pet friendly this home was. From being childproofed with baby gates and cabinet locks, to being well stocked with beach toys, board games, books, and kids' movies (and an extensive movie collection or adults, too) our son couldn't have been happier. And our dog snuggled up with one of the many dog blankets (we forgot ours), made friends on the dog friendly beach, and even enjoyed one of the dog treats provided. This house is beautifully done and immaculate, inside and out. Feels like home without that 'lived in' feeling. The bed in the master bedroom is super comfortable. The owners attention to detail and quick communication made the whole process simple and streamlined, our deposit was returned the day after we checked out. We will definitely be back, and for a longer stay, next time we visit Santa Cruz.

Lovely Ocean Perch

Although the pictures online were really good, the actual house was ever so much better. We all felt welcome as soon as we walked in. On the table, a bottle of wine, a little note card, and chocolate biscotti for my mother. The home is beautifully appointed, comfortable, functional, well loved and taken care of. The details - every little piece of art, or a collected item from the beach, perfectly placed. They even have an itemized list of DVD's by genre, or alphabetized by Title. The instructions were placed where we could find them, easy to read, and very helpful. A book full of maps and recommendations on dining, coffee, places to go and things to see. My dog loved the lawn (which is beautifully manicured) and back yard. We fired up the barbeque and grilled halibut and steak for our birthdays - again, easy to use, stocked with propane and all the tools you need. I really loved this place. Less then a block from the beach, wonderful neighborhood, quiet, friendly folks nearby and dogs play off leash (not legally) at a local hang out. Thank you!

Beautiful house

We love Santa Cruz and we loved this house. The sound of waves is a constant and every inch is designed with care. We like to be able to cook our own healthy meals and this was a beautiful and complete kitchen to do so. Fresh Dungeness crab & little pink shrimp—we don’t get these in Minnesota. Even in January we enjoyed the afternoon sun on loungers in the back yard. Our grownup kids loved it here, too—running up and down East Cliff drive and renting wetsuits and boards on 41st street. My husband and I had plenty of walking in the neighborhood and met the friendly proprietor at his market up the street, The proud 92 year old Mom of the radio station owner on Portola Drive, and Jaguar service station owner, nearby. Lots of little eateries line Portola—beaches, surfers, and the Pacific are in the other direction---a perfect location. This is not to mention trips to Big Sur, Point Lobos, San Francisco and, of course, Santa Cruz. (Jazz fans check out the jazz club in Santa Cruz. So far, we have been able to see Joe Lovano, Esperanza Spalding and Benny Green there.) Thanks Linda and Cal—your place is the best!

My husband and myself and our two dogs recently spent ten days at Beach Lovers Retreat while my husband took a class at UCSC. The house was perfect in every way, location, pet friendly, so close to a pet friendly beach, great kitchen, fully stocked, comfortable bed with nice linens and fluffy towels! Our stay was perfect in every way! When we return to this area we will return to Beach Lover's Retreat. Thank you Linda and Cal for a perfect getaway!

Wonderful Thanksgiving in the Beach House

My expectations were exceeded at every level with this lovely beach house. Every detail was there, including great touches of beach themed art and special treasures you can tell the owners have collected with love. The home was comfortable, had everything we could possibly need and the truly dog friendly atmosphere made us comfortable in a new environment with our 4 legged family. The neighborhood was quiet and there is only a quick walk down the street to a great beach which we enjoyed daily. We were blessed with weather in the 70's and spent many hours out there. I particularly loved the hot shower outside and never did take one inside as this has complete privacy and there's just something special about showering outside..........We are already talking about our next visit and know you won't be disappointed if you choose the Beach House. We're sure glad we did!!!

My family and two dogs absolutely loved this beach home. It was very clean on arrival and had all the amenities we needed. The location was just a very short walk to a dog friendly beach and my dogs had a great time running and playing on the beach. The out door shower allowed us to rinse off all the sand before entering the home. It was also a short distance to some great hiking trails. We would definitely return to this vacation home.

We recently stayed at Beach Loves Retreat and found it to be the perfect home away from home. We have a 15 month old son and 10 year old dog and found this house to meet both their needs. Our party was three adults and a toddler. This home is ready for the little ones right down to the cupboard opening stoppers. We appreciated the comfortable beds, nicely appointed environment, quiet neighborhood and short walk to the beach. We enjoyed sea lions under the boardwalk, tide pools at the state park and less than an hour drive down to the Monterrey aquarium and the infamous 17 mile drive. Very well maintained property. Both Cal and Linda were awesome in answering questions and providing everything we needed to make our stay welcoming and most pleasant.

This home was a perfect location for the beach, Forest of Nisene Park hiking and shopping in Capitola. The dining area is large enough to entertain dinner guests...the internet connection was fast... lots of movies and board games for evenings together. The cozy gas fireplace was great for relaxing. Cal & Linda were very quick to answer questions and return our security deposit. It felt like home.

I surprised my boyfriend with a weekend in Santa Cruz for his birthday with 2 other couples we are friends with (we all live in San Francisco). The home looked perfect online and was even better when we arrived in person! Plenty of room, great kitchen for cooking big group dinners, and the fire pit was so much fun at night to watch the stars! It was such short walk from the beach, and my little dog certainly couldn't get enough of it! Thanks Cal and Linda-- can't wait to come back!

This beach lovers retreat was perfect for our family get away! We have a newborn (5 weeks old), a 2 1/2 year old and a dog. We were worried about going away with a newborn but this place was exactly what we needed for a little relaxation (as much as we can get with a newborn). It is decorated very cute, felt like I was in Hawaii. It is very clean even though it is a dog friendly place. Our toddler and dog enjoyed the back yard, they played out there every morning while we made breakfast in the kitchen. It was nice that we can watch them through the kitchen and living room windows. The fire pit was nice for the evening when the kids went to bed and we got to sit next to the fire and relax. It is in walking distance to a great dog beach. The owners are very nice and accommodating. We plan on going to this wonderful home again! Highly recommended.

I just spent an amazing week with my family at Beach Lovers Retreat. The house is set up perfectly for a family to enjoy themselves with a short walk to the beach. House and beach are both kid and dog friendly and had all of the comforts of home. We will definately be renting the house again in the future. I am hoping to make this a family tradition! We rented the Beach Lover's Retreat for a week for our daughter's UCSC graduation. The home is lovely, and is just that....a home. It felt like we were at our own home and Cal and Linda have furnished and decorated this adorable little cottage in a very comfy and homey way. And yet, it has all the amenities necessary for comfort, relaxing as well as indoor or outdoor cooking. We really enjoyed the back yard with the fire pit and the barbeque. The short walk to the beach was also a nice plus. We will definitely be back to this lovely little retreat!

We Just finished a week in the most lovely home. We had a wonderful experience with the Beach Lover's Retreat. The house provided everything described in the listing and more. The home is beautifully maintained, our kids loved making s'mores in the outdoor fire pit, and our dog had everything she could possibly need - bowls, toys, dog beds. The beach is a very short walk and is perfect for kids and dogs, surfing and playing in the waves. The owners, Linda and Cal, were extremely thoughtful and helpful. We Stayed here for our Sons graduation from the University. After the first night we realized that we should have booked for two weeks rather than a long weekend. The home is so comfortable everything you could need for the home cooked perfect meal and with Whole Foods five minutes away what more could one ask for. The beds are very comfortable along with all the furiture in the house and even though you are one block from the beach it is very quiet. Make that coffee in the morning and enjoy the sun in the front of the house and read your favorite book. Bring your Bike and ride the boadwalk. The owners are great to work with and it is pet friendly also. We are looking forward to our return I just wish we never left!!

I cannot say enough about this vacation home. My family had a wonderful time! The pictures and descriptions do not do this property justice. It is beautifully decorated and immaculately kept. They have thought of everything right down to the last detail. The location is great. You are right between Santa Cruz and Capitola, and a short walk away from a great beach. This property exceeded our expectation in every way! Beautifully decorated with wonderful upgrades in every room. We have never rented a property that was so welcoming and so thoughtful in the details from jars of treats for our dog to having warm fuzzy robes hanging in both bedroom closets for us and the kids. This is a well stocked home! Lots of EVERYTHING that you would need for the beach. Nice beach towels, mats, huge beverage dispenser chilling in the freezer waiting to be filled, dog leashes and tons of beach toys. Very large selection of DVD's and CD's. Great electronics and wonderful TV's in the living room and both bedrooms. The kitchen is well equipped with everything that you would have in your own home. The fire pit in the back yard is a big bonus! You could walk in this home unpack and never leave. This home is well-maintained in every aspect. The owners were very helpful and delightful to work with. Location! Location! Location! You are a walk, bike ride or a short drive to everything. It is located in a nice quiet neighborhood and is just a block away from a fantastic beach that is very dog friendly. It was great to walk out and watch the surfers ride the waves. We brought our bikes and rode along the cliffs at Pleasure Point on our way to Capatola....what a ride! We highly recommend this property!

This is indeed a home, gracious, welcoming, comfortable; the interior and exterior are done in such beautiful taste, and the location is fabulous. The neighborhood is quiet and relaxed. If you're looking for hospitality oozing out of the woodwork, this is your place! And pet owners: take note: not many pet friendly properties are THIS pet friendly! Very difficult to rate at only "excellent."

First and foremost, the photos of the property did not do it justice. We were amazed when we walked through the door for the first time. In addition, the home had a welcoming dining room, great kitchen, comfortable bedrooms (including mattresses), couch and backyard furniture. The home was very clean and fully stocked from coffee grinder, dog bowls, dvds, cds, games, to beach towels and toys. We were astonished by all of the thoughtful and considerate amenities provided by the owners. We have rented many homes, in Mammoth, Cambria, Cayucos, Ventura, LaJolla and this home took the blue ribbon. The beach access is very close; a quaint neighborhood in a central vicinity. Obviously we were very happy with our stay and will rent the home in the future.

Recommended for: People with disabilities, age 55+, families with teenagers, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, sightseeing.

We use VRBO all the time, because we travel a lot and enjoy taking trips with our mutt Henry. The quality of pet-friendly homes varies widely. I can say without reservation that the Beach Lover's Retreat was as nice as any place we've ever stayed, including all the no-pets places. It was as sharp as a model home, but much more artfully put together, plus it had all the practical conveniences. The care & attention to detail really impressed us (loved the "sailboat in the jungle" painting in the dining room!). The bed and sofa were very comfy. Overall, the Beach Lover's Retreat was very uncluttered and serene, and felt quite private, which allowed us to relax and enjoy our vacation. The location was terrific - just a couple of blocks to two great beaches, both of which were dog-friendly. We really appreciated the side-yard shower with hot water for washing off the sand afterwards. The owners were great to work with: just the right amount of communication, and immediately helpful when needed. Thank you Linda, for a wonderful experience! -- Pam, John, and Henry

What sets your home apart is not only the great location and it's being beautifully updated, but instead it is the care and attention you have put into everyhting. We will never stay in hotels again! This was an amazing and very enjoyable vacation. Thanks for sharing your home.

What a lovely home you have. We enjoyed it so much. Great location and everyhting we needed. Decor is beautiful. We enjoyed the beach, the boardwalk, walks in the morning and your DVD collection catching up on new movies we hadn't seen. We hope to visit again.
