Holmes Beach cottage description
Welcome to our Cottage! If you are looking for a simple, quiet, stress-free place to enjoy the beach, this is it. It's not a fancy condo-- no long hallways, distant parking, elevators, or crowds-- and there are no streets to cross to reach the beach.
The cottage was constructed in 1912 or so, as a caretaker's home for a larger house which is now gone. It has been carefully maintained and updated, but has retained the charm of a bygone era.
The interior walls are heart pine, and so are the floors, refinished by hand. Furnishings have been chosen for comfort-- a rattan recliner and matching sleeper sofa in the living room, dining table with leaf (in case you would like to have a guest or two for supper), and king size bed in the bedroom
The cottage is shaded by ancient Australian pine trees and has a comfortable screened porch for a front-row view of the sunsets and stars. With the windows open at night, you can hear the surf!
Walk directly out the screen porch door, and down to the beach--no streets to cross. Or, sit out on the patio and enjoy your coffee and newspaper, or cocktails. Our guests tell us that the best part of the patio area, (besides the view) is it's size-- plenty of room for spreading out.
We are located a block away from the Cafe on the Beach, convenient for all-you-can-eat pancake breakfasts, quick lunches, and relaxing dinners. The beach-front playground is a block and a half away. Take the free trolley and see the rest of the island.
The other side of this duplex, which is a little smaller is also available. Ask about our other garden-side units-- our place is perfect for family reunions, or friends traveling together.

- Our vintage duplex cottage was constructed in 1912 and has been lovingly maintained. It has an old Florida feel, with knotty pine paneled walls, floors, and ceilngs. French doors from the living area open onto the screened porch and face the beach. Enjoy morning coffee on the porch and watch the nesting green herons, white egrets, osprey and stately grey heron have their breakfasts of fresh-caught fish. In the evenings, see all the stars in the sky, away from city lights....moreless

More perfect than we thought.

Our stay at the Bamboo Cottage on the Beach was even more of what we were looking for than we even knew we were looking for. The cottage is quiet, quaint, cozy, clean and comfortable. The pictures are an excellent representation of the property, unlike a lot of the properties we looked at. Nothing in front of your view of the water and it's about 150 feet from the door at most. The public beach just a short walk away is an extra bonus. There is a life guard there that would be handy for a family with children. Cafe is great and there is nightly live music. Close enough to enjoy but far enough to not bother you. Also a nice place across the road for burgers and brews, Skinny's place is a two minute walk. CVS and a Publix is a five minute walk. The free Trolley stops at the public beach. Cortez Village is a ten minute drive with some great seafood places to eat at. We loved The Swordfish restaurant, right on the water and so much fun. Anna Maria Island is old school Florida at it's finest. No chains like McDonalds, Subway, etc, just good old local businesses. And one of the best things we found were the people! Everybody was as friendly as could be. Unusual for a tourist town in my experience. We will no longer need to look for a place to go for vacation every year. We found exactly what we want, need and enjoy at Bamboo cottage on Anna Maria. Getting there is so easy! Leaving there is so hard! About 45 minute drive from St. Pete or Tampa airports. Turn left on Gulf Drive and you're there! You just won't find a cozier place than the Bamboo cottage and you won't find a finer owner than Alice. It may not be the right place for everybody but it's 'home' to us.

My husband and I stayed here for a week in July 2011. The cottage is a step back to the past, a charming beach cottage that we just fell in love with! Everything was clean and in working order, and Gladys was just steps away if we needed her. The cottage is supplied with all you may need, and the bed was very comfortable. The beach is the most beautiful around with white sand and clear blue waters. We will come back many times to relax by the beautiful waters of Anna Marie! Thank you Gladys for sharing your lovely cottage with us!

My husband and I have stayed at the Bamboo Apts. & Cottages a few times and have recommended it to family members too! What can I say, walk out onto the beach or stay in the shade while the sun filters through the branches. We could cook in the kitchen, but why, when the beach restaurant is just a short walk from the backyard. Eat there or outside under the trees, or on the beach. Everything was clean and comfortable and folks were friendly. Easy parking and restaurants and shopping was so close. Even WiFi for internet junkies! 90 minutes from our home, but like a world away! Perfect weekend getaway for us!

Alice, Thank you for the wonderful stay at your family cottage. It was just what we were looking for. You were right, everything we needed was at the cottage. Being right on the beach was awesome. We loved the cottage and the screen porch facing the beach. I would be happy to recommend your accomodations to anyone who is looking for a quiet vacation. Thanks again,

Year Purchased: 1983
About: Hi! Our family owns the Bamboo Apartments and Cottage. This is a picture of my mom and me. My grandparents purchased the adjoining lot in 1971, constructed two duplexes, and moved down from Tampa for retirement. When the Cottage became available in 1983, my parents purchased it. We love the Island, and have many years of happy memories-- sailing, fishing, playing cards, and napping in the sun. My husband and I have three sons, so there is a fourth generation ready to take the helm!
Why Holmes Beach:
Our family chose to purchase the Cottage because there was no way we could resist! The property is huge, and has the most magnificent view of the beach, especially at sunset, and of course, we loved the neighbors (my grandparents). We live in Tampa, but visit the Island every weekend, and it is a quick trip, about an hour. The Island has an unspoiled small-town charm--like Mayberry but with sand and sun! No matter how short your stay on the Island, it will refresh your spirit.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:
Our cottage offers simple peace and quiet, with sunny or shady spots on the patio facing the beach. The patios are nestled in a native Florida meadow, complete with blanket flowers, railroad vine, and sea oats-- it's a trip to the past, when life was much simpler. When families visit, the patio area is a favorite of the older crowd, since it is shielded from the wind and sun, and it has a horseshoe court. The screened porch is a great place for morning coffee and the newspaper, afternoon snacks, or evening refreshments.
