A quiet, comfortable place to stay in convenient Barrio Otoya

I stayed four nights in early August and found Penthouse Casa Don Tomas just as described. Clean, quiet and comfortable. The location is excellent for accessing the downtown area of San Jose or as a base for excursions outside the city. There are several good restaurants within a reasonable distance, L' Ancora and Cafe Mundo just to name two that I enjoy. Even Mall San Pedro is only a 20 minute walk and taxis are everywhere and inexpensive. Don Tomas is a friendly guy and a congenial host. He will be as helpful as necessary or leave you to yourself, whichever you like. Thanks again Don Tomas, I will be back.

My family of 5 spent three nights at the Penthouse in May, 2011. We had an excellent time and found the apartment much to our liking. One of the things that amazed us was how incredibly quiet the neighborhood was despite the fact that it was only a a short distance to the center of San Jose. There are excellent restaurants within walking distance and it is very easy to catch a taxi just up the street from the Penthouse. The property was clean and tidy and Don Tomas is a gentleman and we felt well looked after during our time there. Recommended.

Recommended for:Families with teenagers, tourists without a car, sightseeing.

Beautiful home. The home is perfectly clean and close to restaurants and downtown San Jose. The home is located in a very quiet cul de sac and very quaint. Don Tomas and his wife were really wonderful and helpful assisting with travel arrangements and providing recommendations to sites/places around Costa Rica. Thanks a million Mr. Tomas.

I have stayed in San Jose a few times and let's just say I was not sad to leave the hotel room when it was time to go. My experience at Casa Don Tomas was quite the opposite! The condo is the perfect little slice of serenity. It has old world architecture and design and offers a truly authentic yet extremely nice Costa Rican experience. I already miss walking down the steps to the BEAUTIFUL courtyard to take in the gorgeous mornings filled with song birds, great coffee and beautiful vegetation. The location is KEY - it's a close walk to everything you need, but is tucked away in a quiet, safe neighborhood. I also had the pleasure of speaking with Don and he is a an absolute gentleman. I would highly recommend this place and stay there again in a heart beat!

this spot is ideal for just about anyone wanting to stay in an intimate, secluded feeling location right in downtown. we've been travelling to san jose, for a number of years and it seems we've found the location we'll be returning to, hopefully, every time from now on. the courtyard out back is completely isolated from the streets, with a well placed hot tub and beautiful landscaping. Tomas is a gentleman and a scholar, a true host with plenty of useful advice. the pad has a king bed and two double beds, with one restroom. the full kitchen is ideal if you just want to walk to the mercado and buy groceries to snack on. for the price it wouldn't be a bad location to set base at and travel to other spots around the country, leaving your check luggage at don tomas' and travelling light. i have nothing but good things to say about this location.

Tomas, I just wanted to say we had a great time at your place.. If you want to be in a city close to everything but feel like your in the comfort of a tropical hideaway, this is the place for you. The pictures really dont do this place justice, from the beautiful greenary to the hot tub, to the professional, friendly people involved to make you feel relaxed and really a home away from home feeling. Im from Bermuda where it is beautiful, but costa rica is a special country with great people and when i come back soon I will be staying at the casa don Tomas.. My husband and I stayed in this lovely apartment for 15 days recently and found it perfectly suited to our needs. It took no time at all for us to feel right at home. Don Tomas was a wonderful host and was very helpful in "showing us the ropes" . There was nothing we asked that he wasn't able to answer for us...and believe me, we had lots of questions! We found the apartment spacious and well appointed. The decor was lovely... from the artwork on the walls to the beautiful hardwood flooring and winding stairwell. The apartment was represented very well by the photographs posted on the website. We were not at all disappointed. We particularly enjoyed the patio with the resident parrots and beautiful flora and fauna indigenous to the area. There is a zoo right behind the house and it was so entertaining to hear the roar of the lions every morning. The apartment is very close to lots of restaurants and nightlife and we had no qualms about walking most everywhere we wanted to go. We had a wonderful experience in Costa Rica all the way around and can't wait to visit again. We found it a lovely and gracious country. Beautiful and Historic

This is a large and comfortable apartment with wood floors and high ceilings. In the mornings, we could see green parrots in the trees just outside the windows. The outdoor living space is relaxing with attractive plants and flowers. We very much enjoyed the hot tub in the evenings. The house is within walking distance of grocers, restaurants, parks, and the artisan mercado. Don Tomas is an excellent host with an extensive knowledge of Costa Rica. The Penthouse Casa Don Tomas gave us a wonderfully personalized experience in San Jose.

I loved the location and loved the apartment. It was just 'a couple-a few' blocks to some of the best restaurants and bars I've been to. Every diner was spectacular, every capachino; the margaritas at Cafe Amon, every beer, delightful. It's private and relaxing, yet I felt I was part of the fabric of Costa Rica!

This was a great choice for us, as we felt very safe and cared for from the moment we were met at the airport to our return. The apartment was plenty big (two extra bedrooms), large kitchen and living room. Having high-speed Internet and satellite TV kept us connected with the outside world, and we found great places to eat within walking distance. We reccommend the Penthouse Suite for anyone who wants to be centrally located in a safe and lovely suburb of San Jose.

An incredible bargain and outstanding host! I use VRBO for all my international travel and Penthouse Casa Don Tomas is at least as good as any. Read the accomodation details; three bedrooms, lots of space inside, a full private patio with Jacuzzi, all in an incredible location! But the extra added value here is your host, Don Tomas. Costa Rica is a beautiful country with lots to do and staying at Don Tomas's penthouse just made it feel more authentic than staying at some hotel. The courtyard and jazuzzi blend with the plantlife and makes you feel like you are in the middle of the rain forrest, very relaxing! Having traveled throughout much of the world this was a pleasant change of pace from the norm, I would recommend this for any traveler staying in San Jose, especially becuase you really felt safe and secure in this house. One of my favorite times during my stay at Casa Don Tomas was chilling in a comfortable chair under a ceiling fan with a cool cross breeze blowing through. But maybe even better was the jacuzzi and watching the sun set. Don Tomas was an entertaining and generous host. He gave my friend and I a walking tour of the neighborhood showing us several nice places to eat and drink beer. We soon felt comfortable and explored other neighborhood locations on our own, but always with the knowledge we would be back at his lovely house. I look forward to returning soon.

We stayred in the Penthouse Don Tomas during our honeymoon in February 2009. The Penthouse is lovely and very conveniently located in San Jose. Romeo, the driver for Don Tomas, is absolutely charming, and we called him frequently for help with travel. He was always available and went out of his way to help us. Don Tomas is an amazing host. We enjoyed talking with him, and my husband especially enjoyed the time they spent together at the barbero. :) We can not wait to return to the lovely country of Costa Rica. I was very pleased with my decision to stay here. Don Tomas ensured everything went very smooth. His driver Romeo did an excellent job picking me and a friend up from the airport. His driver waited outside the airport with a sign so he was easy to spot. The place is in an excellent location just minutes from most anything you'd like to do in San Jose. He even provides wireless internet with a computer so there's no need to travel with a laptop. The apartment is perfect, very spacious, secure and located very close to everything. Shops and great restaurants all within walking distance. This was a great place!!! Very safe and secure. There is a lot of space that you would not get in a hotel. The kitchen was nice when we came back from a late tour. We always sat on the patio when it was too hot to go to town or were to lazy. We liked the company of the dog and cat. Only a few minutes from downtown which made it great since you don't get all of the noise, but still downtown. I would recomend this place to anyone going to Costa Rica.

I would like to highly recommend the flat in which I'm currently staying, here in Costa Rica. I can assure you that the Penthouse of Casa Don Tomas it is a lovely apartment, quite spacious and comfortable. My girls and I have been here for one week so far, and will be staying for one more week. The apartment is airy and bright, and Mr. de la Ossa is a gracious host. His employee cleans the flat every day and even washes, dries and sorts our laundry. The location is great, as far as the city goes. Most things we want to do and see are within easy walking distance, and it's been easy to get to the highway when we want to get out of town. San Jose is a busy and somewhat overwhelming city--not an easy place to vacation with children. Mr. de la Ossa has helped me to get my bearings, and even drove us to the grocery store so that we could stock the kitchen! Dear Don Tomas We had a lovely two week stay in the Penthouse flat. Your home has been a wonderful retreat for my girls and me. Every afternoon, when I return from work we have gone out to wonder and explore the streets of this city, noticing how people live, how cars and motos move, how things like bakeries and buses swell and hearing the music of this place. We stayed for a month at Casa Don Tomasin January/February 2007. What a wonderful host Don Tomas was! He gave us much assistance with information regarding "where to go and what to do." The house itself was a great place to live while we enjoyed activities in San Jose and in the countryside. It was a spacious, comfortable home away from home. It is also centrally located and we could walk wherever we wanted to go -- to restaurants, museums, etc.

A spacious 3 bedroom apt. in a fully restored home, private entrance, close to downtown San Jose. Enclosed private courtyard with jaccuzi. A great place to stay whether you are looking for a place in the city or as a base for travels throughout Costa Rica. You will get a more authentic C.R. experince here compared to the Escazu or Santa Ana locations (which reminded me of being in any North American suburb). I used it as a base and took 1-2 days tours. Driving in San Jose will keep most people in taxis, which are cheap, safe and plentiful, (ask Don Thomas to introduce you to Romeo the cab driver). Tours are available through the Don Carlos hotel travel desk about a 5 minute walk from the apt. I also stayed at their Santa Theresa beach front property, one of the most beautiful undeveloped, natural beachfront locations I have ever seen. Picture a tropical forest running down to an endless deserted white beach that is being pounded by giant waves rolling in from the open Pacific. Get up early for the sunrise but the sunsets will dispell any questions you might have about there being a higher power at work here on earth.
