SOME RESTAURANTS WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE
Our Family Favorites:
2223 Market: 2223 Market has managed to survive for several years without even hanging a sign outside - just look for the burnt-orange exterior and the street address. Its success rests on great cocktails (including the giant martinis) and a good wine list, which includes some well-chosen French and California wines. It boasts a varying menu of dependable California cuisine, featuring gourmet pizza and entrees with mainly Mediterranean influences. 2223's bright, sunny, art-filled interior and key position in a prime crowd-gazing portion of Market make it a good bet for casual drinks or a semi-formal dinner. 2223 Market St., (415) 431-0692.
Blue: Blue has become a popular hangout along the Market Street corridor by providing great views of the busy sidewalk outside and serving dependable American diner fare (a.k.a. "comfort food") with a gourmet twist. 2337 Market St., (415) 863-2583.
Café Flore Locals used to call it "Cafe Be Seen" for its remarkable magnetic power to attract big fish from the Castro's bohemian performance/music/film pond. With its giant wrap-around patio flanking Market and Noe streets, Cafe Flore is not the place to hide on laundry day - unless you happen to own a pair of fabulous cat-eye sunglasses - as you're bound to run into someone you know. Inside the glass walls, there's an espresso bar offering Italian sodas, pastries, all manner of coffee drinks, beer and wine. The kitchen, an order-at-the-counter affair, has a good selection of healthy salads and sandwiches. But remember to secure an outside table before you stand in line - the Flore is usually full up with dawdlers, scribbling in their journals or chatting about the newest underground performance art. (Jan Richman) 2298 Market St., (415) 621-8579.
Harvest Ranch Market: This popular boutique mini-mart provides a nice alternative to sit-down restaurant fare if you're in a hurry. Feast on locally-made breads (Acme, Grace, Metropolis and Il Fornaio), imported cheese, organic produce and a variety of health-food products similar to those carried by chains like Whole Foods. Harvest is also a good place to pick up quality pre-made foods, like wraps, pasta, sandwiches, soups, veggie sushi rolls, big brownies and cookies, and excellent (but expensive) pre-made rice and vegetarian/vegan salads. The sidewalk outside the store sometimes turns into an impromptu picnic area, especially on sunny weekend afternoons. 2285 Market St. (at Noe), (415) 626-0805.
Home: What was once swanky JohnFrank during the dot-com boom has been transformed into a cozy spot with reasonably priced, comforting food that people these days can't get enough of. Those who like a little Sunday brunch pick-me-up can hit the make-your-own-Bloody Mary bar. For $3, a server brings a glass with ice and a shot of vodka. You slide over to the fixings bar and add tomato juice or Mary mix, all manner of spices, hot sauces, Worcestershire, lemon or lime and a salad bowl full of garnishes from spicy green beans to anchovy-stuffed olives to the requisite celery. (Brunch is served from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.) 2100 Market St. (at Church), (415) 503-0333.
Lime: An eclectic small-plates menu in an eclectic atmosphere. Servers' thick white belts match the white pleather booths, where diners bask beneath the pink back-lit mirrors that line the ceiling. Monitors are embedded in the marble bar and bathroom mirror for those seeking more eye candy. Diners can dip triangles of grilled cheese into a Campbell's-inspired tomato sauce, and Moroccan-spiced lamb chops into minty yogurt. Cornmeal-crusted halibut joins guacamole in mini tacos, and grilled shrimp partners with a green papaya salad. The short dessert list includes chocolate cake with a pitcher of hot fudge and chocolate sorbet, and a trio of mini pot de cremes. 2247 Market St. (between 15th and 16th streets), 621-5256.
Squat and Gobble: The Squat and Gobble is a no-nonsense chain of about five restaurants in the the San Francisco area where you can get plentiful helpings of food at a reasonable price. Once you step inside the door, the menu is displayed in large format on the wall - divided by various categories such as Vegetarian, Eggs, etc. Once you have decided what you want, you place your order and are given a number to place on the table of your choice. It is not too long before the delicious meal arrives.3600 - 16th Street @ Market and Noe. Our FAVORITE FAST AND EASY BREAKFAST.

Great SF Stay

We loved our stay in SF. The weather was perfect! We loved the neighborhood. The farmer's market on Wednesday was great with music and lots of produce. We didn't end up using our car, because metro was right there and definitely got us to Union Square and other areas faster. The first day we used our car, but ended up spending $50 in parking! The apartment was very clean and well decorated. The kitchen was very large and nicer than we expected. I would definitely recommend this place to my friends and would stay here again.
Owner response:Tim, Thank you for staying in our flat. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and you had perfect weather. I wish I could arrange that for everyone! We also love the farmer's market. I probably should include it in our ad. I hope you will stay with us again, as we appreciate how well you took care of our home. Laurie

Attractive But Garbage Smell Makes it Unpleasnt

The apartment looks very nice and is very livable. It has parking, which is a benefit in San Francisco where street parking has 2-hour time limits. It also is in a great neighborhood. Those are positives, but the negative is a major one and was very troublesome. The garage below the apartment is where the garbage for a neighborhood restaurant is put. It piles up. As a result, the garage stinks and the smell permeates into the apartment. Not a pleasant experience! We had to burn incense and candles and still couldn't mask the smell. As soon as the trash was picked up, the smell went away. Be forewarned!
Owner response:While this has not been an issue in the past, we are very concerned about this complaint. The day that you notified me of the issue, we increased garbage pickup to 7 days a week. This seemed to resolve the problem immediately and should never be a problem again.

I would highly recommend the flat to single travelers or couples visiting San Francisco. I stayed there for 10 days while helping my daughter relocate in San Francisco. The underground garage was of great benefit to me because I could come and go as needed for the avalanche of moving-related chores. But a car is not needed or even recommended for most travelers - there was plenty of public transportation nearby. The flat interior was beautiful, well-maintained, and so much more spacious and comfortable than a comparably priced hotel room. The washer/dryer came in handy, too, given my 10-day stay. VRBO photos cannot capture the charm of the tree-lined Victorian street and surrounding neighborhood. I felt more like a local than a tourist there. Morning newspaper, coffee or breakfast were just steps from the flat. And a farmer's market popped up on the block mid-week. I tried some of the owner-recommended restaurants nearby and loved Squat & and Gobble for breakfast and Sushi Zone for dinner. Unfortunately, L'ardoise, the French restaurant next door, was closed for vacation, so I didn't have a chance to experience it - next time!
Owner response:Mary Ann, I am very glad that you enjoyed your stay in our flat. I hope you will stay with us again when you come visit your daughter. We appreciate how nicely you left our home at departure. Laurie

My husband and I stayed in this wonderful flat for a week and although we spent much of our time away, we loved every minute that we spent there! The flat is beautifully appointed - in fact, we thought that it looked as though it had been staged. It is clean and very well-maintained. The kitchen has beautiful granite counter tops and dark cherry wood cabinets. There are wooden floors throughout the flat. The kitchen is totally stocked with everything that you could ever need. There are even different spices for cooking. The bathroom shower is new and beautiful. There are two large flat screen TV's - one in the bedroom and one in the living room. The area is great for transportation. Walk two blocks and you're able to go anywhere in the city. No car is necessary, however, if you choose to bring one, there is an available parking spot in a garage in the same building. Oh, and, there is a little French restaurant, also in the same building, that unfortunately was closed the week that we were there. We certainly hope to stay here again!! Laurie was terrific about e-mailing me right back with any questions that I had. REALLY LOVED IT!

ABSOLUTELY A FABULOUS FLAT. Private entrance way and your own parking spot. Lots of granite, wonderful cherry cabinets, and great television sets and wireless. This location is simply the best in San Francisco. It took me 5 minutes to walk to the "underground" metro system. Numerous restaurants within minutes. The neighborhood does a wonderful job of lining the streets with flowers, etc. A great park is just down the street. I was told that this flat is in a highly rated small historic building. It is gorgeous. What a treat. Thank you Laurie

Adorable one bedroom flat for extended stays in a delightful neighborhood. Very accessable to transportation. Corner markets, coffee shop and wonderful restaurants within walking distance. There is a wonderful French restaurant on the corner next to the apartment. Has lots of amenities. Unfortunately, this apartment is not for you if you have to be homebound for any length of time. As charming as this place is, we were in SF for about 10 days for my husband's surgery at UCSF - Parnassus. We were looking for a quiet place for him to recover post surgery. We found the noise from the restaurant which was only open from 5 (staff arrived around 2pm to start preparing for service and ended about 1 hr after closing) - 11:30pm during the week and 5-12:30pm on Friday and Saturday a bit stressful between the sound of the music, people talking, the restaurant crew taking trash and recycle to the garage under our apartment and end of night clean up late a night. The bed in the apartment sits against the back of the restaurant. Also, since the restaurant is closed on Sunday and Monday, their trash sits in the garage until trash day mid week. This can create some unsavory smells in the apartment. The landlord and restaurant was very accommodating when we brought this to her attention and are making efforts to address some of the issues mentioned. Of course, this wouldn't have been an issue if we were there to enjoy the city or visit family because we would have be out and about like most people visiting SF and wouldn't have been so sensitive to the local sounds of the neighborhood.

This is the ideal vacation rental in the City. This one bedroom apartment comes completely equipped with everything one would need for a full month's stay. There is off street parking on site, but one really does not need a automobile in San Francisco. The farmer's Market is open Thursdays and is only a two blocks walk. The apartment is close to all major necessities and transit. There is an excellent French restaurant located around the corner in the same building. We highly recommend this rental.

We two old timers thoroughly enjoyed our 8 days in this cosy unit with great amenities. The unit itself is spacious enough, clean and well maintained, in a quite quiet street next to Castro. There is a cosy back garden that is very relaxing. The location is terrific for catching public transport too all parts of San Francisco, and we used a weekly pass to full advantage. It is close to a good range of restaurants and bars, and particularly to the IGA supermarket at the end of the street. We loved the subway, and the F line that went the whole way from Castro too Pier 39 and all points on Market and the Embarcadero in between. The owner was most obliging and ensured our stay was comfortable. Wireless internet access was good, as was the range of TV available. The unit is well appointed and there is plenty of cutlery, glasses, crockery and cooking utensils - more than adequate, and much better than many similar units. Access by coded locks rather than keys is a plus.
