Barking Spider Ranch in the Gold Country on the American River
- Minimum stay:2 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:Yes
This perfectly located retreat sits on two acres of beautiful gold country land and river; ideally nestled on the South Fork of the American River at Highway 49. Offers your own private beach, fishing holes, gold panning, and wildlife viewing. Very spacious (1800 square feet) and lots of windows/views. In the heart of the recent meteorite landing site.
After a day of river rafting/kayaking, wine-tasting, or fish in our river, fire up the BBQ outside while watching the kids explore for gold or lounge in the hammock while reading a good book. The kitchen is fully loaded with appliances and there is a pub table in the dining room that seats eight people with an additional kitchen bar with stools.
After dinner, cozy up to the fireplace in the family room in one of the overstuffed couches (they do suck the life out of you) with a glass of wine and gaze at the beautiful view of the river or play a round of poker in the rompus room while the kids play one of the many games available.
Take a bath in the jetted tub and retire into one of the newly furnished guest rooms for one of the most peaceful night's sleep this side of the West. There is one king bedded room; one room offers two queen beds; the other room offers a queen bed and the rompus room has a set of twin bunk beds. For those guests that don't mind sleeping on the couch, we offer three comfy couches, along with a great place to camp outside that overlooks the river. There are two showers and two bath tubs. Towels/linens are available.
Pet Friendly: $25 per night; per pet and $500 refundable security deposit.

My family and few of my friends family stayed at Barking Spider ranch last year July4th weekend. On the picture, this place didn't look that great, but our view completely changed after our stay. This is a wonderful vacation place, near the river and convenient access to white water rafting locations. The house was very nice and cozy, we everyone liked the place very much, particularly kids enjoyed a lot. For the first time we did white water rafting, and it was a stimulating experience for all of us. The owners are very nice and kind. Though I haven't met them in person, but I had several phone conversation with them. I had to mention the life lasting experience I had. During this trip I lost a gold locket that fell off from the chain I was wearing. I thought it must have been fallen off during the rafting. But two weeks later i received an envelope from the owner Carrie. For my surprise I found the lost locket inside the envelope with a nice note from Carrie " Eureka we found your gold. When you visit gold country you should find gold, not leave gold”. What a professionalism!! My gratitude goes to Carrie & her family. GaneshRecommended for: Families with young children.

We had a fantastic weekend staying at the Barking Spider Ranch. The house, its grounds, and the river all blew us away. The countryside around Coloma and Lotus was beautiful. The house is well appointed and very comfortable. We recommend it highly.Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with young children, adventure seekers.

This was our second time back at Barking Spider Ranch. It's a wonderfully comfortable place with great access to the American RIver right across the street. This house has such a wonderful feel to it - so welcoming. You really feel like the owners are there to share it, and are happy to do so. Besides being perfectly located on a private road, it is just secluded enough. There are plenty of nice touches like a firepit and outdoor furniture, and the view over the River is great. Inside, it is very comfortable and adequately furnished. I like that guests are encouraged to use the leftover staples of previous guests, and leave those that are not used for future guests. Sure beats hauling everything home. We use VRBO all of the time and you just get a feeling about a place. This one has never disappointed. We will be back.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, families with young children, girls getaway, adventure seekers, people with disabilities.

Our group of ten stayed at this lovely house last summer to attend a wedding nearby and to raft down the the river. I feel compelled to write such as late response as now I am using the vrbo service to spend time in the Big Island this fall and appreciate comments by others. This place is hands down better than any motel you could rent nearby. Very clean and well maintained. The owners were true to their word too. Thank you! The only complaint was that 2 of the stove burners were not working properly. I can live with that. Great air conditioning. You might need that in the summer here. We launched our raft on the river across the street for a fantastic adventure down the American River. Consider wearing protective head gear when going down and cinch up that life vest. A friend of ours was a previous guide on the river and led us down. Do not go down without trained and experienced guides. We would highly recommend this place and would like to revisit. Sincerely, KevinOwner response: Thanks, Kevin! You would be happy to know that since your visit, we have remodeled the entire kitchen and now it's spectacular with a NEW stove that works entirely. Visit again! Carrie (owner)

We were looking for an alternative to a hotel or lodge while traveling to Coloma for a wedding, boy did we find it! You have such a beautiful home and location, with a short distance to Venezio Winery where the wedding/reception took place. We couldn't have asked for a more relaxed environment to celebrate with family and friends on such a special occasion. We can't wait to come back and enjoy the area again and again.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

We had a lovely experience at your home. We were looking for something more rustic than Napa yet with all the creature comforts we are interested in, it was a great fit. Your home is lovely and would like return this summer for a little R&R and enjoy the river when it is a bit warmer. Thank you for being so easy to work with.Did you find this review helpful? This house is wonderful, full of all the amentities that you could possibly need. It is very warm and cozy and has a feel of home for sure. If you want to read a good book curled up on the couch next to the fire, this is the most relaxing place to do so. During the summer there is always activity going on in Coloma or just sit by the river and relax and wave to the people kayacking or rafting down the river. This place is a great house to escape the city life or whatever you may be wanting to take a break from.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

As a Bay Area resident, I was looking for a nice get-away not far from home, but which would give me a sense of space and serenity. My wife and I shared the house with a group of close friends and had a fantastic time! We spent our days along the river and our nights either cooking and celebrating at the house, or at the nearby Sierra Club restaurant and bar. There was lots to do in the area, though we ended up spending most of our time near the house. The fishing was great (though the catching was tough!)Did you find this review helpful? This rental was perfect for our family because of its proximity to the river. We love to whitewater kayak and raft. You can literally walk down to the river and put it. Such a great location. The Sierra Nevada restruant and Sierra rising bakery/coffee shop are also walking distance for some great food and atmosphere if you want to mingle with locals. We will be returning soon. Thanks so much FrankDid you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

Why the Owner Chose Coloma:
We were visiting family in the Gold Country in early 2006 and fell in love with the area. We loved the relaxed vibe and the beautiful foothills and of course the beautiful river. Within a month we accepted the keys to our new home located on 2 acres and on the South Fork of the American River. The wineries, open spaces, wildlife, river recreation, culture and great people are all amenities that we enjoy. It's our home away from home so we are happy to share it when we can't be there ourselves. Every time we go for a visit, we instantly feel all the pressures of the daily grind evaporate and we always return back to the bay area refreshed and relaxed.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
There are so many great things to do in the historic Gold Country: River Rafting, hiking, biking, eating, wine tasting at many local wineries, buying locally grown organic olive oil and honey, relaxing, reading a good book on the private access river in front of our home, BBQ, spending time with family and friends for the weekend on a hot summer day, gold panning, horseback riding, shopping in Placerville and Auburn for unique gifts and much more.
