North Captiva Island is one of the best-kept secrets in Florida... a timeless tropical haven, on an unspoiled barrier Island, off of the Gulf Coast, near Ft. Myers!
Also known as Upper Captiva Island on some maps and by many locals, this island offers solitude, swimming, a multitude of seashells continually being washed to shore, superb white beaches, and dramatic sunsets. Tarpon roll in the passes, while snook, redfish, and grouper are found near our beaches and on our grass flats.
A large part of the seven mile island is a state wilderness area with tidal flats and an aquatic preserve for the protection of endangered wildlife including the manatee. Migratory and nesting birds on this Island include osprey, pelicans, herons, and egrets.
Transportation to the Island is by scheduled and chartered water taxi service, by private boat, or by private plane to a grass landing strip. Once arriving on the Island, locals travel by golf cart and bicycle. Automobiles are not permitted on the Island.
North Captiva Island reminds us of the Hemmingway days in the Keys and the small island colonies in the Caribbean. Sanibel Island and Captiva Island to the south were just this type of peaceful retreat until a causeway brought traffic, high-rises, and hordes of tourist to their shores.
Island hopping to nearby Useppa Island, Boca Grand, and Cabbage Key (known to many as the Island that inspired Jimmy Buffet to write his famous "Cheeseburger in Paradise" song) is a favorite past time for many Island residents and visitors.
