Location: Kekaha, West Kauai, Kauai, Hawaii, USA (distance to Airport 45 minutes; 20 minutes to Poipu)

Accommodations:  House, Studio + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-3)

Custom Hawaiian house located near the Historic Kekaha Sugar Plantation Mill. This quiet Hawaiian neighborhood was once home to many sugar plantation workers. The "Hale" or house is a couple blocks away from the beach bordering open fields and the Waimea Canyon mountains. A quiet and peaceful area, unlike the beach front houses that are exposed to the main Hwy, "Hwy front" which is very noisy at times.

A private entry leads to the large new studio. A sofa, King-size bed, custom concert counter tops, new stainless steel appliances, and a beautiful travertine shower are inside the studio. The backyard is landscaped with palm and fruit trees. Adjacent to the yard, large open sugar cane fields stretch to the beginning of the Napali Coast and Polihale Beach Park area.

On the "Mauka" mountain side of the house is the amazing Grand Canyon of the Pacific, named the Waimea Canyon. Less than a minute drive from the house is the beginning of the road to many of the Waimea Canyon lookouts and hiking trails. The "Makai" or ocean side of the house faces a 17-mile white sand beach with great sunsets. It is a 10 minute walk from the house to the begining of the beach. An even closer walk from the house, (5 min.) leads to a black sand beach. The PMRF barking sands base is a five minute drive.

Since the Sugar Plantation shutting down several years ago, more and more vacationers visit Kekaha Beach town for its beautiful beaches and the Canyons of Waimea. Kekaha is also away from all the crowded hotels and tourist traps.

The slow and easy Hawaiian lifestyle of this neighborhood will relax you in this home. Cool trade winds from the Waimea Canyon and sunshine from the oceanside can be enjoyed all year around.

come visit soon, ALOHA

    • This is a very nice accommodation - clean, spacious, quiet, well-appointed. The location is perfect for exploring Waimea Canyon, Kokee State Park, Barking Sands, and Polihale Beach State Park (our favorite). Light pollution is so low we could see the Milky Way at night. Makai generously let us use his washer/dryer. Be sure to buy food en route (in Waimea) because Kekaha has very few shops and no restaurants.

    • This is great place in a nice Hawaiian neighborhood. The owner is a terrific guy, and the apt is beautiful, and definately worth the price. The location is perfect for visiting Waimea Canyon and Kokee state park, which are amazing. Its also near some nice westside beaches too! I would stay here again and would recommend to friends. The nicest thing is its away from all the tourists, and the locals have that warm Aloha spirit, that we crazy New Yorkers enjoy so much!

    • We recently spent a wonderful week at Hale Makai. Everything was as advertised...we loved the quiet neighborhood with horses and chickens nearby. The beach at Salt Pond had monk seals showing up daily to sleep on the sand. Waimea is just 5 minutes away, and has everything from internet access (we didn't bring a lap top) to art and great food. Best of all--the "sunny side" was uncrowded--even on Memorial Day weekend. We were lucky enough to share some fresh Mahi Mahi caught by our host, and papyas and mangos from the trees. We highly recommend our host and his studio!

    • Feb. 19, 2006 RE: Makai's Rental unit We Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in kekaha mainly because of the gracious hosts we experienced in this recently built rental unit. Makai ensured we were comfortable and helped us with a variety of other vacation activities including use of his bikes, a waverunner rental at a very reasonable price, an evening cruise on the napali coast, ect. The unit has brand new appliances, immediate access to the washer and dryer, a beautiful tiled shower, a king sized bed, cable TV and air conditioner- all at a very reasonable price. During our stay we enjoyed beautiful beachs, whale watching, dolphin watching, and incredible local scenery. We also enjoyed the local fish BBQ on the grill. If you are considering a stay on the sunny sidde of this beauitful paradise and want to experience the local culture as well as wonderful hospitiality , then Makai's rental is the place to be. We strongly recommend it! Thanks Makai and Ili! Rick lewan and Cathy Gray
