Location: Matinicus, Matinicus Island, Mid-Coast & Islands, Maine, USA (Matinicus is 1 hour by private ferry from Rockland, Maine)
Accommodations: Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 6)
Enjoy a relaxing and refreshing get-away vacation in a spacious Maine waterfront cottage on a private island off the coast of "Down-East" Maine. If you want to truly experience the peace & harmony of "old Maine", then this is definitely the best choice in Maine vacation rentals for you! Sit back and enjoy breath-taking sunrises over the nearby islands as you sip your morning coffee on the deck and watch the small lobstering village slowly come to life. Two beautiful, crescent-shaped beaches are only a short walk away. Live, succulent Maine lobster and fresh bakery goods are delivered to your door by the local islanders.
This large (1000 sq/ft), 2-story cottage comfortably sleeps 6 people, is charmingly furnished, and is ideal for families, or 2-3 couples to share. The 1st floor has a queen bed in one bedroom and a queen & 2 twin beds in the other bedroom. A full-sized bathroom is accessed from the common hallway that ends at a large deck overlooking the ocean. The second floor has a large dining table (seats 6) and a fully equipped kitchen, including all the provisions for cooking and eating lobster. A large, open living area, with an easy chair, love seat and two couches (one is a fold-out double futon with a full-sized thick mattress), opens out to a second deck overlooking the ocean and outer islands.
Matinicus Island is best reached by private ferry (scheduled trips run 7 days a week), private boat, or by airplane from Rockland, Maine. There are also regular trips to Criehaven Island, as well as Matinicus Rock Lighthouse, where the puffin colonies can be observed and where heroine light-keeper, Abbie Burgess, once worked & lived. Many people claim that the Matinicus Island of today compares to the Nantucket of the 1940’s and 50’s, or how they remember their childhood summer vacations on Nantucket ... not the way Nantucket is now with all the commercialization, tourism, and extremely high prices. Staying on Matinicus Island is much like traveling back in time ... life moves at a slower pace that is set by the wind, the weather, and the tides of Maine.
There is absolutely something magical, mystical, and emotionally healing about a Matinicus Island vacation ... perhaps it has something to do with the limitless expanses of water, the quiet serenity, and the beautiful surroundings. Come and journey across breath-taking Penobscot Bay to experience the unique feeling on Matinicus of being in a place that time has truly forgotten. Most couples and families find they have more opportunities to bond due to the lack of "distractions" imposed by tourism and commerce ... allowing for the renewal of close personal relationships. There is always more time for relaxation and the cultivation of inner peace on Matinicus Island, far away from hectic daily life in an ever-increasingly complicated world.
