We recently spent a week in the Park apartment at Pilrig House. Our stay couldn't have been better. The apartment is comfortable and very fully equipped. The owners Debbie and Philip graciously shared their knowledge of Edinburgh and the surrounding area. We had easy bus and cab connections into town. The Park apartment has a commanding view of Pilrig Park giving you a feeling of being on a country estate and not in city.
Owner response:Hi Fred and Peggy, Thank you for your kind words, and we are delighted you enjoyed your stay in Edinburgh - and your tours with our wonderful tour guide, Barbara - she also told us how much she enjoyed meeting you and taking you to show you the sights beyond the city! You were star guests - we hope you'll come back and visit us again should you ever return to Scotland! With our very best wishes, Debbie & Philip x

Stayed in the Park Apartment with our son who was running in the half marathon on the Sunday. The apartment was exceptional. The cleanliness with all the little extras made the holiday special for us. The location was ideal for us with many great attractions within walking distance. The hosts were great. Highly reccommended and hope to stay again.
Owner response:Thanks Gerry and Elizabeth - we look forward to hopefully seeing you next time you are in Edinburgh. Glad you had a good day for the half-marathon on Sunday - please pass on our congratulations to your son!

My daughter and I stayed in the Park Apartment at Pilrig House and it was a first class experience from beginning to end. Debbie met us the moment we arrived and showed us into the apartment, everything was explained and we were made to feel completely at home. The apartment was well supplied with everything from DVD's to guide books and maps and very comfortable beds. It was spotlessly clean and has a beautiful view over the park. You can easily walk to Leith and enjoy the waterfront, the centre of Edinburgh is a little further but taxis are reasonable and buses run nearby if you do not feel like walking. We were treated to a very interesting tour of the city by Philip. The whole experience way exceeded our expectations and we have no hesitation in recommending it to others.
Owner response:John - thank you so much for taking the time to review your stay. We are pleased you enjoyed your visit here - and, more importantly, felt at home. We do hope that we may see you again some time! Debbie and Philip

If you’re visiting Scotland for the first time or the tenth time, I can’t think of a better place to stay than Pilrig House. The apartment is well presented and justifies the charm of its time period. The apartment is also very well equipped with all the modern necessities that can make living in a new country easy. Having travelled the world to some extent I can safety say that you will not find two better hosts than Debbie and Philip. I have never seen two better informed people about their county than Debbie and Philip. Thank you Debbie and Philip you’ve had a large hand in making our vacation to Scotland FANTASTIC.
Owner response:Oh - we are thrilled you enjoyed your stay, and managed to golf on the courses you had on your list! Thank you for this lovely review. Stay in touch, and hope we see you again! Debbie and Philip x

Pilrig House is steeped in history especially with its family connections to Robert Louis Stevenson. It was identified in his books and one has to wonder how many of his imaginations and literary ideas were conjured up there. Thats no wonder as Pilrig is an evocative place perfect to think and relax and where time seems to stand still. We stayed in the Park Apartment at the front of house with its superb view of trees and greenery just through the front gate. Everything is at hand for a unique stay and a cosy night in or taking a pleasant walk into Edinburgh or Leith where the variety of sightseeing, shopping and activities are endless. Debbie and Philip have thought of everything to make a stay memorable and we were sorry to leave. There is a fine choice of restaurants but we particularly enjoyed a special 3 course lunch at the Michelin Star "Kitchen" in nearby Leith. It was simply outstanding and very good value.
Owner response:Thank you Tom and Gail - imagine us meeting on a boat trip! It was great to see you again, and lovely to have you stay as guests here - hopefully there will also be a 'next time' to share some laughs...

Our stay at Pilrig House far exceeded our expectations. The Park apartment was immaculate, warm and cozy and very well appointed. Nice kitchen, wonderful bath, great beds and linens...a perfect place to come back to after a day of sightseeing. The view looking out on Pilirg Park from the living room window seat was more icing on the cake. Landlords Debbie and Philip could not have been better hosts. This gem of a place along with the "magic" that is Edinburgh made for a perfect holiday experience.
Owner response:Rusti and Bill - what a lovely review - thank you. You also brought your own 'magic', and it was a pleasure to have you stay here... Till next time!

This is by far the finest property I have ever had the pleasure to reside. Start with Debbie as a most gracious host and add location, furnishings, ambiance, character, and on and on. We felt as though we were home complete with a carafe' of scotch. Look out the front to a huge park and a quite neighborhood. A walk down town is about 20 minutes and only about ten to the harbor where many restaurants abound. The unit has a very complete kitchen including a washer/drier. Tea service set with tea and biscuits, one could prepare any meal desired in this facility. Lots of tour guidebooks and DVDs make you visit even more thorough. This will be our place to stay for all future visits to Edinburgh.
Owner response:Wow - it may seem as though we take it for granted, but, each time we get a review like this we are incredibly touched, grateful, and delighted... It really makes our efforts - and we genuinely do work hard at making people's stay as good as it can be - worthwhile. There can be no greater pleasure than to know that you enjoyed staying here. Thank you Bob - it was lovely to meet you, and your delightful daughter - hope you had a good trip in the Highlands!

Pilrig House is a very cosy and charming place to live. It is something special especially if you see it from the Pilrig Park side. We had rented the Park Apartment which offered a lovely view into Pilrig Park. Although situated almost in the centre of Edinburgh you have the impression that you are staying in the country side - all looks green. It is a quiet place where you can really recover. The city centre and the harbor side are within 10-15 minutes walking distance though. The apartment is very well equipped whith excellent interior - very tastefully furnished. The technical equipment is very modern. When we arrived we got surprised by a wonderful bouquet of flowers, a bottle of wine, a decanter of Whisky, and several candies. Our hosts Debbie and Philip were very friendly and helpful. Philip took us around by car and showed us quite a few highlights of Edinburgh which we later on visited. Both are really nice hosts. All our questions were answered. We definately recommend Pilrig House as a centre of all activities in and around Edinburgh and as a starting point for tours to Scotland' s scenery. There are so many things to see in Edinburgh and so many restauants and pubs around that we can't really point out any. There is an excellent written description inside the apartments which tells you where to go and what to see.You can really rely on this if you want to go to these places. We are looking forward to get back there in the near future.
Owner response:Dear Heinz, Anne and Lucie, Thank you very much for your kind review - it really was a pleasure to have you stay, and we are so pleased you enjoyed your time here. Debbie & Philip

Our stay at Pilrig House was the crown jewel in our three weeks in Scotland. Every detail and amenity was carefully planned and provided. Big fluffy towels, luxury soaps, soothing colors and decor, comfy sofas and beds, and a fantastic view of the park and all the dogs from the cozy windowseat. Debbie was most helpful, answering all our questions, anticipating our needs. She even provided some word games when she found out we liked puzzles. Books, videos, and detailed tourist information were in abundance. The location was an easy walk to grocers and restaurants, and the Royal Botanical Gardens. Debbie gave us very good advice about the taxi ride to the airport during rush hour, and was so helpful in countless ways. Have you ever stayed at a venue that provided a luggage scale? I highly recommend this venue for anyone wanting comfort, beauty, a great view, and convenient location.
Owner response:So pleased you enjoyed your stay, and thank you for taking the time to review us! Hope we see you again in the future, Debbie

We have travelled and stayed in a variety of self contained apartments and I am definitely a 5 star girl! Pilrig house is just perfect. Very homely and great location. Close to public transport and convenience shops. Apartment is very well equipped and arriving to find flowers and all the little domestic things that we usually have to go out and purchase was a bonus, even having a postbox to post mail was very convenient. Debbie and Phillip were very warm friendly and helpful. Thankyou Debbie for taking us out for a drive around Edinburugh on our last night to show us some of the city that we had not seen. We loved our time in Edinburugh and staying at Pilrig house was the best accommodation on our whole trip. We felt like we were going home each evening after a tiring day sightseeing. The park in front of our apartment was lovely. Would definitely recommend Pilrig house to anyone considering going to Edinburugh. We have very fond memories of Phillip and Debbie and our week in Scotland.
Owner response:We loved having you here and really enjoyed your company on our 'wee' trips - if ever you are travelling again to Scotland, we sincerely hope we'll see you again - even if you are not staying here - give us a call! Debbie & Philip

A beautiful apartment and absolutely stocked with everything a person needs and more. The little extras like fresh fruit, chocolate, scotch etc. are more that I have ever had renting from VRBO. Debbie and Phillip are marvelous and so helpful. The little extras make this apartment an experience. We stayed two weeks and the apartment was cleaned after one week and refurbished with fresh linen. The DVD's are great to have. We enjoyed our two weeks and would return to this apartment if we return to Edinburgh.
Owner response:Thank you Galdys and Don - it was a pleasure to have you stay here - we both enjoyed meeting you, and are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. You certianly made the very most of your trip and were always so enthusiastic and fun. Sincerely hope we may see you again! Debbie and Philip x

If you want to stay in a home away from home, Pilrig House is the place. Everything that was listed about the Pilrig House is accurate, but it does not give you the "feel" of the place. That "feel" is what makes Pilrig stand out. We were greeted by Debbie, the owner, upon arrival. Debbie had been communicating with me via emails and her responses were always helpful and immediate, so meeting her was an extra personal touch. We entered the apartment and immediately felt we were in someone's home. Debbie had roses on the dining table, scotch in a decanter, chocolates and cookies in the kitchen and living room, plus some of the extra amenities (you'd find in a hotel) in our bedrooms. Debbie gave us a tour of the house and explained certain appliances and how they worked. She made it clear that if we had any questions or concerns, not to hesitate and call. The bedrooms were cozy, had comfy linen and comforters, plenty of towels, and bathrobes for all. The only possible negative was that the dining area is a tight squeeze, but it did not affect us, since we really did not eat our meals there. I could go on and on with my praises for the Pilrig House, Debbie, and her husband, Philip. I definitely would return to stay here, and have already recommended it to family who live in Scotland, and for their future company.
Owner response:Thanks Viv - it was great meeting you and 'the girls'... Philip and I really would liked to have had you stay longer. Maybe next time. We appreciate your comments - wish we did have more space for the dining-table, buy, hey, we'd have to knock down some of those 3-foot thick walls to create it... Hope we see you again in Edinburgh and at Pilrig House... Debbie & Philip

In a place far far away we had The trip of a lifetime. As a world traveler (I have over 4 million miles with Delta Airlines) I have stayed in so many wonderful homes and hotels that to get me excited would take a lot. As a Christmas gift my wife Sandy decided we were going to spend some of her inheritance, go to the UK and spend a long week together in Scotland. I was born and raised in the UK. We would attend the world’s finest New Years Eve celebration Hogmanay and we would be there for it. Sandy found the Pilrig House that is situated a very short walk from the Town of Edinburgh and even shorter walk to Leith. We had the 2-bedroomed Park Apartment. Pilrig is a 17th-century Scottish house (built in 1638), home of Robert Louis Stevenson's mother's family. You can feel his presence in the house. It was the coldest winter in history as I recall but that didn’t matter. The two owners Debbie and Philip made us welcomed and warm with hospitality and knowledge of the area. Philip is a storehouse of info on the actual site the house is built on. The House is set on a beautiful park and the “apartment” allows you to sit in the box window and just gaze out and view to the mountains and the coast. Snow added to the magnificence of the view and the cold was kept at bay by the warmth of the fireplace and the two proprietors. You are not really sure what to expect when you sign up on line for a property but let me assure you this was a fantastic decision on Sandy’s part. Even in the winter you can experience the peacefulness of the garden. As a photographer I found so much to work with in and around the house. The apartment allows you to use the main entrance from the park and in itself is remarkable. The rooms, the furniture, the amenities, the little extra touches, the views and the location all make the Pilrig House a gem among gems but it’s the friendly and helpful owners who add the warmth that the real travelers relish. We took advantage of the local restaurants which were suggested by Debbie and became regulars at one in particular, “The Yard” a perfectly genuine Scottish ale house with simply scrumptious food. A house is not a home until you add folk to the equation. Pilrig House is a historical and adventurous property but it truly becomes a home away from home when Debbie and Philip are added to the picture. Sandy and I have made promises to return to Pilrig House and have recommended it to everyone who says they are going to Scotland.
Owner response:John and Sandy, You were the perfect guests - great fun, enterprising, enthusiastic, and, moreover very nice people! We so enjoyed having you stay here, and will remain forever impressed with your 'legenadary' spirit in facing down that Narnia winter in Scotland, and getting out and about each day! Look forward to the day you return, Debbie & Philip

Pilrig House was even better then described and in pictures. Very clean and well-maintained, excellent location and easy bus trip to downtown. Owners had extensive materials regarding everything and anything about Edinburgh and all of Scotland. Leith's restaurants were so good-especially enjoyed the Kitchin. We loved Pilrig House and would definitely recommend to everyone and hope to go back one day soon. To be able to stay in such an historic home with its ties to Robert Louis Stevenson was just magical. Our trip to Scotland was fabulous and that includes Pilrig House too.
Owner response:Thanks Jo-Ann - we think of you often and enjoyed hosting you and L! It is always great to know that our efforts are appreciated! Hope you make it back to Scotland - and Pilrig House - in the future. Debbie

My stay at Pilrig was wonderful. Everything is maintained to the highest of standards. Useful travel information was readily available. I needed to be able to complete some work and had no trouble with internet connectivity. As it worked out, I was there during the Edinburgh festival and stayed in and around the city for my entire stay. I walked to and from the home and festival sites and also walked down to the waterside. The pictures and description are spot on, and I would highly recommend Pilrig House. There's plenty to explore. Pilrig makes a comfortable, soothing respite. Thank you Debbie and Philip!

This place is absolutely beautiful and is in a perfect location. My friend and I stayed here for 5 nights and used it as a base for day trips around the area. The owners were so helpful, friendly and warm. It is possible to walk to the downtown area if you like but there are also bus stops very close by. There are restaurants in the neighborhood if you don't feel like going too far. You do not need a vehicle. It was spotlessly clean and had everything in it that you could possibly need. The crystal decanter of scotch, the chocolates, fruit, coffee, tea, cookies, fresh flowers and nice toiletries were a very welcoming and thoughtful extra. I would definitely love to stay here again and I highly recommend it to everyone!

Entering Pilrig House immediately transports you into relaxation, comfort and convenience! As first time visitors to Scotland, we were skeptical about some of the rentals we previewed online actually having no real knowledge as to the accuracy of their reviews. You need have absolutely no qualms about renting Pilrig House!!! It is absoutely exactly as described! Walking in the front door, we immediately felt we were "home". The hosts were friendly and extrememly helpful with anything and everything you may need to know; not only about Pilrig House, but Scotland as well!!! They were also very accessible on-line and responded to any questions immediately. The apartment was comfortable and luxurious with anything you might need right at hand. The location on the edge of Edinburgh is extremely conducive to relaxation! The beautiful and quiet park in literally right on your doorstep, the small Pilrig private garden in charming and peaceful. A few steps takes you to a bus stop, however, the walk into the city is quite pleasurable as well and takes about fifteen minutes. I cannot imagine a location near Edinburgh that would be more comforable, safe, and relaxing than a stay at Pilrig House!

I have never been more pleased with a lodging rental than my four nights at Pilrig House Apartments in Edinburgh. We rented the Balfour Apartment in this historic House, located off Bonnington Road just off the corner of Pilrig and Bonnington in Pilrig House Close. Buses 11 and 36 have stops on Pilrig and Bonnington nearby and cab fare is about 7-9 dollars from Waverly Station. Deborah and Phillip met us at the House and provided fresh fruit, Scottish whisky, milk and bottled water along with bath robes, numerous toiletries, large and numerous towels and personalized, detailed info relating to restaurants, shopping, sites, etc the likes I have never seen in a lodging. Freshly cut flowers on the dining table, numerous magazines, maps and suggested phone numbers complimented the offerings. Deborah called one evening just to make sure everything was okay and provided more info relating to our trip to Rosilin the next day. Pilrig House is a historic 17th century house facing a park where we enjoyed walking and people/dog walking. It is also a short cut to Leith Walk. We met a number of very friendly, helpful people in the neighborhood and got in the way of soccer players in the park as we watched our step around the wonderful dog walkers! All we had to do was unfold a map and someone was stop and ask if we needed directions. The restaurant at the corner of Pilrig and Bonnington (Guilty Lily?) provided a good devning meal and a small grocery store a door or two down from the restaurant provided us with our staples for the kitchen. Pilrig House is about a 15-20 minute walk down Pilrig Street to Leith Walk to Princes Street to the Royal Mile. Since it seemed to be true that you can experience all four seasons in a morning in Edinburgh, we did this walk only once! This spacious, two bedroom apartment exceeded our needs and expectations. We obviously did our homework before arriving but always take "with a grain of salt" pictures and postings from a lodging's web site. Go to Pilrig House's web site, look and read. What you see and what you read is, if anything, understated.

When we arrived at our apartment and opened the door - we were simply awed! A 5 Star rating should be given here, not only for the best amenities in the Country but the most friendly, helpful "give the shirt off their back for you" proprietors. I have stayed in many a hotel and B & B, including the Bahamas ATLANTIS HOTEL. THERE ISN'T EVEN ONE 5 STAR HOTEL WHO CAN BEAT PILRIG HOUSE. I also want to say that we met not only our "landlords" for the week, but wonderful caring "friends: forever. And if God permits, we will return as soon as we are able. In February 2007, we had the unique pleasure of enjoying the extraordinary hospitality of Pilrig House's Debbie and Philip Martin. We are already looking forward to our next visit and will definitely be back at Pilrig House. Being able to enjoy such superlative accommodation in such a splendid city made our first vist to Edinburgh a truly memorable one. The apartment was immaculate and fully equiped --everything and more was at our fingertips and the beautiful city of Edinburgh was just outside our front door. Pilrig's central, albeit quiet location, in a park setting --made for quick and easy access to the surrounding city. We would urge all those looking for accommodation in Edinburgh to contact Pilrig House first--it is a cherished treasure in a remarkable city. Robert and Lucia Stephenson

Pilrig House was our home for five weeks this past summer, and, indeed, it truly was our home: the park, the waters of Leith, the Whiskey Society, golf on the green, the gardens, gourmet supplies from Valvona and Crolla, and especially our hosts, Debbie and Philip. The flat came equipped with brilliant books to read, films to watch, compact discs to play while sipping tea and eating scones with triple cream. Debbie and Philip became our friends for life and made our stay memorable in so many thoughtful ways. Our nine year old son, Mason, didn't want to leave and still talks about his experience at Pilrig House every day. We are looking forward to returning as soon as we possibly can. It goes without saying (as you may see by reading the other comments) that Pilrig is wonderfully comfortable, beautifully styled and incredibly convenient to Edinburgh. But it offers so much more than that! What did we love about the apartment? Lazing on the window seat, watching the comings and goings in the park. Sitting on the sun warmed steps, with a cup of tea and a book. Lying in bed, in the dark, with the sash window open, listening to the wind in the tree, just beyond. Very long, luxurious baths, in the beautful bathroom, using the lovely toiletries provided. The feel of that fantastic wooden floor on bare feet! The wonderful, welcoming, happy "feel" of the place. The friendly local people and shops, warm "bran farls", from the bakery, for my breakfast! Above and beyond all else, the lovliest asset of Pilrig House Apartment is it's owners. Philip and Debbie are 100% dedicated to making their guests feel happy and welcome. They are extremely generous with their time and fascinating local knowledge. We owe them great thanks for, undoubtably, one of the best holidays we have had. There is no question that we shall return.

Had a most enjoyable stay, and will return for next year. Everything that you would ever need for a relaxing vacation was there for you. Debbie and Phil made you feel like you were part of the family. My favorite part was being able to feel the history in the house from the front door to the setting of the land where you can see the famous tree that Cromwell gathered his troups. Bus service was also right there so you could hope on a bus to go into town or just walk. I already miss it.

We have stayed in many self-catering places on three continents and this one is - without doubt - the finest of all. It is most attractively furnished and impeccably equipped. Debbie and Philip have thought of absolutely everything and are delightful hosts. We echo each and every one of the previous positive comments by other fortunate tenants. We spent a week at Pilrig House in June 2006 and wish we could have spent longer. The location is ideal as the parkside setting provides welcome tranquillity in the middle of this beautiful, but busy city yet it is just a few minutes' walk from the frequent bus service into town. Pilrig House is fascinating, given its illustrious history and Debbie and Philip give so generously of their time and knowledge. The membership in Edinburgh's Single Malt Society is a superb extra! We are recommending this spot to everyone we know and hope to return very soon.

This charming apartment facing an open park and within walking distance of Princes Street is an absolute oasis in the middle of Edinburgh!( Once there, it allows you to avoid driving your car through the traffic, if you are an American, like myself, and not comfortable with "fast-paced city drivng on the left!)It is beautifully decorated, fully equipped, and a peaceful and cozy place to begin or end your vacation in Scotland. Your hosts, Debbie and Phillip, are informative, enthusiastic, friendly and readily available to make this your favorite stay. I will definitely be back.

We are experienced travelers, used to the the finer things in life... We had the absolute pleasure of staying three days at Pilrig House last month. (May, 2006) Wonderfully appointed, completely outfitted, warm hospitality, friendly hosts, convenient location, charmingly decorated...all in all, a pleasant surprise, and one place we'd recommend to anyone.

Debbie and Philip, Our vacation to England, Wales, Scotland and France was just wonderful. We stayed in 7 different establishments, from hotels to cottages to apartments to flats. Most were OK, and one or two were just satisfactory. However, one stood out as exquisite, that was Pilrig House. Please accept our highest praise for a lovely apartment, clean, beautifully decorated, comfortable beds, wonderful park setting etc., etc. Also our thanks to both of you for your kindness and help in making our Edinburgh stay perfect. While this was our first European experience with a rental of this type, we have rented many times in the US, and Pilrig ranks tops with us. Our very best to both of you and thanks again. Warmest Regards Carolyn and Jim Eitel
